NEW YORK - Madonna told Oprah Winfrey Tuesday she was surprised by the firestorm surrounding her efforts to adopt a 13-month-old boy from the African country of Malawi. And she blamed the media for it. ADVERTISEMENT Madonna taped the interview via satellite from London, for airing Wednesday. It was the first time she'd spoken publicly in depth about the adoption. According to a member of the "Oprah" audience, Madonna said she was startled by press reports about the toddler's father, Yohane Banda, who was quoted last week as saying he didn't realize he was signing away custody of his son, David, "for good." "She said she met with the father, she looked him in the eye," audience member Sheryl Lewis recounted. Madonna, she added, said she acted according to the law and had both "oral and written approval...and now the press have gotten to him," Lewis said. In an interview posted Tuesday on Time magazine's Web site, Banda said, for his son's sake, he will not contest the adoption. "I don't want my child, who is already gone to come back," he said. "I will be killing his future if I accept that." Madonna told the "Oprah" audience that she and her husband, Guy Ritchie, had been thinking about adoption for more than two years, said Lewis, who lives in Deerfield, Ill. Another "Oprah" audience member, Amanda Bannon of Crawfordsville, Ind., told ABC News that "the biggest thing was that Madonna wants to get the point across that she doesn't want this to be a discouragement to other families to not adopt." Madonna, 48, traveled to Malawi on Oct. 4 with Ritchie. They spent eight days visiting orphanages she is funding through her charity. David was taken to London last week after Malawi's High Court granted Madonna and Ritchie an interim adoption order. Madonna has two children — daughter Lourdes, 9, and son Rocco, 6. ___

I have NO problem with Madonna has done. Dayam whether or not she/Ritchie reasons at at least particially self-serving (Hell. Who's AREN'T??) But I find it disengenious of the REMARKABLY media savvy Madonna to claim she didn't expect the swarm of debates over her adopting an African kid. |

If the media hadn't gone overboard in focusing on this issue, Madonna wouldn't have been provided with a platform to cop her plea. I think Madonna could really score a PR coup if she'd just hand the baby back to his daddy thereby creating a scenario that would turn all of her detractors into the villains. These meddlers would then be the ones guilty of robbing this child of a chance to survive and thrive. Madonna should then just find an African American orphan to adopt and lavish toys and luxuries and nannies on. This would also save her the trouble of having to take the child back to his homeland twice a year. She could even hire someone to tutor him Ebonics and just find a nice ghetto somewhere and take the kid on a tour of the 'hood in order to keep him in touch with his roots. |

Madonna and everyone who is so ready with opinions on this issue should familiarize themselves with the Hague Convention on Intercountry Adoption: http://travel.state.gov/family/adoption/convention/convention_462.html Then again, it'd be nice if the US ratified it, but that's another story... |

Another web source: http://www.hcch.net/index_en.php?act=conventions.text&cid=69 Also, these provisions should be considered alongside the Convention on the Rights of the Child: http://www.unhchr.ch/html/menu3/b/k2crc.htm WHich, as I have mentioned here before, the US has also still not ratified. |

I'll be watching Oprah this afternoon to see what she has to say. I find it unbelievable that she is blaming the media for creating chaos and that someone of her stature is unable to keep the media out of her affairs. Couldn't she travel and conduct her business under an assumed name like some of the other celebrities do. Do the ppl of Malawi even know of her celebrity status? Anyway, I think it's commendable of anyone to adopt but it shouldn't be because you want a pet or a playmate for your other children. Or because another Hollywood type has done it and it's the latest trend or fashion accessory. In this case, if the father placed his child into the orphanage due to poverty then Madonna should have made a financial contribution. Couldn't you adopt someone without removing them from their environment? And she should have found another child who was a true orphan. Someone who lost both his parents to AIDS or something. |

I don't know if that is how Modanna feels about it but I am sure that is alot of racist, white, Americans feel about it. And Mzuri, I am puzzled as to why you find that statement so funny. |

Madonna is not a fit mother for any child. How much contact do you think she will have with the child travelling the road to do concerts, making personal appearances, movies, videos, etc. These show biz types don't even see their own natural children. If she really wanted to help a child, she could have helped his real parents keep him or made it possible for some real parents to adopt him. There are plenty of kids here in America who needed help or a home. It is another of a long string of publicity stunts this witch has pulled off. |

Do you really know what you're talking about, chrishayden? Or are you just spouting popular misconceptions? Madonna is probably as good a mother as many and a better one than some. Just because a woman spends a lot of time with her children doesn't mean that she is a great mother. Constant close proximity with her kids could make her both mentally and physically abusive. How well-adjusted a woman is, is a big factor in whether or not she's a good mother, not what her station in life is, and it's more about the quality of time spend with her youngsters rather than the quantity. Your judgment of public figures always seems to be based on whether or not you like them. But your personal sentiments have nothing to do with what's really true about them. I don't know whether Madonna is a good mother or not; and you don't know, either. |

Like most celebs, Madonna has a nanny that raises her children. She even stated that she never changed any of her children's diapers before. That's motherhood for ya. |

Just because a nanny changes a baby's diapers doesn't mean that she is raising it. Madonna has also stated that she is very hands-on and involved with her child-rearing duties. |

It says a lot about a mother who has two children and never changed either of her kids diapers. Years back, Madonna talked about how her daughter often referred to the nanny as "mommy" because of how much time she spent with her. Maybe things have changed since then. Doubt it. |

Yes, that's right. A rich woman who can afford to have somebody else change the smelly diapers of her crapping baby is really a terrible person. What's the point of being rich if you can't have somebody else do your dirty work? All a baby really needs is a lot of cuddling and stroking. And even Madonna could do that. But of course you 2 self-styled Doctor Spocks wouldn't know that. |

There are benefits to tending to the physical needs of one's infant child that transcend their basic physical necessity. |

What are "the benefits to tending the physical needs of one's infant child that transcend the physical necessities"?? All an infant wants is to be fed, kept warm and snug and held securely enough to quell his instinctive fear of falling. A child can sense the emanations of love, and it doesn't have to come via having its diaper changed. |

if madonna was REALLY concerned about helping the children of malawi, she could have done something to support HUNDREDS of the children of malawi. for what she will spend to take care of this ONE child, she could have helped many, many families in malawi, and also kept them together. madonna is just out to keep her name in the press. a celebrity who's fame is slowly fading will DO anything to keep their name in the press. first madonna seeks out a hispanic man (she admitted to doing this intentionally) to father her first child. then she has a baby with a white director. now she adopts a "black" child from africa. i guess the next thing will be a orphan from china, and then an orphan from india. look at all of the press and discussion she (madonna) has gotten because of this adoption. madonna could have helped hundreds of people from malawi, with the money she will spend to care for this ONE child. i personally don't care about the people of malawi or madonna. but i find it interesting, the actions a celebrity who is not as "big" as she used to be, will take in order to maintain their celebrity "status". i only wish that one of these celebrities would consider adopting a BLACK AMERICAN child. this leads me think about all of the black american children who are without families. |

Yeah, yeah, yeah. Blah, blah, blah. I am no big fan of Madonna but she did make big financial contributions to charities in this country and I'm sure this child will grow up being happy that he was spared a life of poverty and pain. But screw that. Others know what's best for him. I really wish Madonna would give the child back so all of you busybodies would shut up. |
