There is a black lady on Dr. Phil who hates White people. She is labeled a racist. Some think it's an incorrect term to use, and it only applies to Whites. Do you all think Blacks can be racist? |

chrishayden ought to know the answer to this question; he's a black racist who deludes himself into thinking he is superior to blacks who don't embrace his generic brand of militancy. |

The correct term should probably be prejudiced. She might be a racist too but she is not in the position to enforce institutional racism against anyone. She most likely won't be keeping anyone from getting a job or advancing their lives. Her racism won't have a financial impact upon others in the same way that white people's discrimination and racism impacts negatively upon us. |

If you believe racism and prejudice are exact synonyms, then I'd agree a Black person is every bit as capable of being racist as a White person. But if you believe racism is subset of prejudice that manifest in the willfull, malicious subjugation of others to one's will, then I'd disagree that most Blacks ae capable of being racist. Not because we wouldn't be. We simply lack the POWER to effect such. |

The term "racist" seems to have evolved in the ongoing enviroment of race consciousness in this country. If you don't consider this woman a racist - and she really isn't, then blacks also have to stop playing fast and loose with this word in their day-to-day encounters when any time a prejudiced white person snubs them, they yell "racist." Racism is a lot more complicated than that. |

Cynique: Stop obfuscating. I don't consider myself superior to all other blacks. I consider myself superior to YOU! And, as usual you can't answer the question. Yes or no. Is the woman a racist? |

No she isn't racist, chrishayden. Didn't I just say that, dingbat? And if you didn't consider yourself superior to me, you'd lose your reputation of being a deluded fool. |

BTW, chrishayden, I was being facetious in implying that you are a racist. You are really nothing but an impotent malcontent who represents absolutely no entitlement and wields no influence except over the constituency of one who peers out the mirror at you, trying to mask the befuddlement that is reflected. |

Some will argue that Blacks cannot be racist because, collectively, we have no "power" in the United States. Others will argue that power has nothing to do with being racist; race does. Both statements are oversimplified. I think we should always try to distinguish between individual racism and institutional racism. Anyone can be an individual racist if they believe in the inherent inferiority/superiority of one race over another, or if they advocate basing the treatment of others on their race. Blacks can't be very racist at the institutional level, they would have to control a large enough portion of this nation's institutions to act on whatever individual racist tendencies they might have. However, I do not think that all racism is not institutional, and for that reason the women mentioned above can be racist. She may lack the ability to oppress whites based on that racism, but she probably would not hesitate to do so if given the opportunity. I found these definitions on the web. Racism is broken to into five categories: Academic Racism, Scientific Racism, Individual Racism, Institutional Racism, and Ideological Racism. Academic racism refers to the tradition of prejudicial study of people's societies and cultures, languages and peoples by Western scholars. With regards to African people its bases was formed during slavery and colonialism to remove any form of noble claim from the victims of these systems, thus reducing them and justifying their position as “natural” and a continuation of their historical “worthlessness.” Legendary quotes come from some of Europe's most respected scholars such as, Darwin, David Hume, and Immanuel Kant. David Hume, also said, ‘I am apt to suspect the Negroes to be naturally inferior to the Whites. There scarcely ever was a civilised nation of that complexion, nor even any individual, eminent either in action or in speculation. No ingenious manufacture among them, no arts, no sciences”. In the nineteenth century the German philosopher Hegel simply declared ‘ Africa is no historical part of the world.’ This openly racist view, that Africa had no history, was repeated by Hugh Trevor-Roper, Regius Professor of History at Oxford University, as late as 1963. Scientific racism refers to the use of science (or the veneer of science) to justify and support racist beliefs. The use of science to justify racist beliefs goes back at least to the early 18th century, though it gained most of its influence in the mid-19th century. Works like Arthur Gobineau's An Essay on the Inequality of the Human Races (1853-1855) attempted to frame racism within the terms of biological difference among human beings, and with the rise of theories of evolution after the work of Charles Darwin became well-known, it became common to consider some races more evolved than others. These points of view were very common within the scientific community at the time—even Darwin, who was an active abolitionist and considered all humans to be of the same species (against a trend of polygenism popular in anthropology at the time) believed that there were inherent biological differences in the mental capacities of different races. Ideologies such as social Darwinism and eugenics used and reinforced many of these views. Individual racism or Prejudice, example: John thinks that Mary will have bad attribute X solely because Mary is a member of race Y. Prejudice is, as the name implies, the process of "pre-judging" something. It implies coming to a judgment on a subject before learning where the preponderance of evidence actually lies, or forming a judgment without direct experience. Holding a politically unpopular view is not in itself prejudice, and politically popular views are not necessarily free of prejudice. When applied to social groups, prejudice generally refers to existing biases toward the members of such groups, often based on social stereotypes; and at its most extreme, results in groups being denied benefits and rights unjustly or, conversely, unfairly showing unwarranted favor towards others. Institutional racism or structural racial discrimination is racial discrimination by governments, corporations, or other large organizations with the power to influence the lives of many individuals. Nazi Germany's state racism is the most famous example, along with South Africa during the apartheid era. Examples of racism in United States domestic policy include slavery and the genocide against Native Americans. Ideological Racism or Racialism is a term often found within white separatist literature, inferring an emphasis in racial origin in social matters. Racism infers an assumption of racial superiority and a harmful intent, whereas separatists sometimes prefer the term racialism, indicating a strong interest in matters of race without a necessary inference of superiority or a desire to be harmful to others. Rather their focus is on racial segregation and white pride. In most English dictionaries currently there is no sharp distinction between "racism" and "racialism".

Actually, I've only seen three types of Racism. The first was Individual Racism, the second was Instutionalized Racism, and the last was Environmental Racism. I've never seen all the other ones but thanks for the information. |
