Read this, Cynique. I guarentee after you do you'll fall on your knees, shouting and thanking the Lord you met me.

Last night I attended a hip hop gospel concert at the Vaughn Cultural Center (Another aside to Cynique--See? You go see My Fair Lady--I go see REAL Negroes doing REAL Negro stuff)

They had gospel mimes and a gospel thug rapper but the main performers were Michael "Wildman" Rainer and the Soul Rebels. They were sort of a gospel, hip hop funk group--sort of Parliament Funkadelic with gospel (and four women singers).

I have been in hotter gospel concerts--I been in some where Negroes started shouting and falling out and doing the holy dance when they stuck the key in the door to unlock it--this one took about an hour to get the Negroes to that level).

On the whole it was enjoyable and the singers and musicians were excellent--I generally only like hymns out of the hymn book sung acapella by a congregation and no choir--no jazz. That's how the devil got in the church all these instruments and stuff. Jesus ain't had no music department.

I did notice that the stiffness in my shoulder was gone this morning--but I digress.

I was listening to all the singing and testifying and going on and noting that I have been witnessing this for my 56 years on earth, and got to wondering what was the problem, then? Why hasn't all this good singin good prayin worked?

The Lord sent me the answer this morning. I noted last night how what these kids were doing, though excellent and no doubt sincere, was really the same as any other musician.

Oh no doubt their performances were inspired by religious fervor, and they were sincere, but it was mostly about the fervor and the performance.

I mean, if it was all about the Lord it would have done for a bunch of dirty, raggedy people to get up singing off key as long as they were sincere, right?

It ain't never about that. It's about fine, bravura performances and not so much about going out and living a good life, isn't it?

I mean it's more misdirection, isn't it?

The "gospel thug rapper" should have been your que, Chris.

A bit of an oxymoron, isn't it?

The way I see it, he ain't no worse than Clara Ward, James Cleveland, Andrae Crouch, Kurt Franklin, Mary Mary and all those other Pop Gospel Stars over the years who have wedded popular music to church music--

I'm really not interested in reading your long post, chrishayden, for the simple reason that you have written it and in my book that automatically voids its credibility. zzzzzzzzzzzz

Parliament Funkadelics at church. Sounds like fun. Anyway, there are numerous references to music, singing and musical instruments such as harps, horns, tambourines, cymbals, flutes and lyres in the Holy Bible. And so I disagree that musical instruments have brought the devil into the church. It's all those panty thuggin, money hungry corrupt preachers. That's the devil!!!
