Coverage of "School Shootings" Avoids the Central Issue
Gunning Down Women

In the many hours devoted to analyzing the recent school shootings, once again we see that as a society we seem constitutionally unable, or unwilling, to acknowledge a simple but disturbing fact: these shootings are an extreme manifestation of one of contemporary American society's biggest problems -- the ongoing crisis of men's violence against women.
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, so let's take a good hard look at these latest horrific cases of violence on the domestic front. On September 27, a heavily armed 53-year-old man walked into a Colorado high school classroom, forced male students to leave, and took a group of girls hostage. He then proceeded to terrorize the girls for several hours, killing one and allegedly sexually assaulting some or all of the others before killing himself.
Less than a week later, a heavily armed 32-year-old man walked into an Amish schoolhouse in Pennsylvania and ordered about 15 boys to leave the room, along with a pregnant woman and three women with infants. He forced the remaining girls, aged 6 to 13, to line up against a blackboard, where he tied their feet together.
He then methodically executed five of the girls with shots to the head and critically wounded several others before taking his own life.
Just after the Amish schoolhouse massacre, Pennsylvania Police Commissioner Jeffrey B. Miller said in an emotional press conference, "It seems as though (the perpetrator) wanted to attack young, female victims." How did mainstream media cover these unspeakable acts of gender violence? The New York Times ran an editorial that identified the "most important" cause as the easy access to guns in our society.
NPR did a show which focused on problems in rural America. Forensic psychologists and criminal profilers filled the airwaves with talk about how difficult it is to predict when a "person" will snap. And countless exasperated commentators -- from fundamentalist preachers to secular social critics -- abandoned any pretense toward logic and reason in their rush to weigh in with metaphysical musings on the incomprehensibility of "evil."
Incredibly, few if any prominent voices in the broadcast or print media have called the incidents what they are: hate crimes perpetrated by angry white men against defenseless young girls, who -- whatever the twisted motives of the shooters -- were targeted for sexual assault and murder precisely because they are girls.
What is it going to take for our society to deal honestly with the extent and depth of this problem? How many more young girls have to die before decision-makers in media and other influential institutions stop averting their eyes from the lethal mix of deep misogyny and violent masculinity at work here? In response to the recent spate of shootings, the White House announced plans to bring together experts in education and law enforcement. The goal was to discuss "the nature of the problem" and federal action that can assist communities with violence prevention. This approach is misdirected. Instead of convening a group of experts on "school safety," the president should catalyze a long-overdue national conversation about sexism, masculinity, and men's violence against women.
For us to have any hope of truly preventing not only extreme acts of gender violence, but also the incidents of rape, sexual abuse and domestic violence that are a daily part of millions of women's and girls' lives, we need to have this conversation. And we need many more men to participate. Men from every level of society need to recognize that violence against women is a men's issue.
A similar incident to the Amish schoolhouse massacre took place in Canada in 1989. A heavily armed 25-year-old man walked into a classroom at the University of Montreal. He forced the men out of the classroom at gunpoint, and then opened fire on the women. He killed fourteen women and injured many more, before committing suicide.
In response to this atrocity, in 1991 a number of Canadian men created the White Ribbon Campaign. The idea was for men to wear a white ribbon as a way of making a visible and public pledge "never to commit, condone, nor remain silent about violence against women." The White Ribbon Campaign has since become a part of Canadian culture, and it has been adapted in dozens of countries. After the horrors in this country over the past two weeks, the challenge for American men is clear: will we respond to these recent tragedies by averting our eyes and pretending that none of this happened? Or will we at long last break our complicit silence and work together with women to turn these tragedies into a transformative cultural moment?

There does seem to be a mysterious, deep-rooted hate for females harbored by a lot of men. Freud was totally vexed by both his wife and his mother and considered women a necesssary evil. Did I read somewhere once that many psychotic men have sexual feelings for their mothers and hate both themselves and her for stirring these reactions. And they really are offended if their divorced or widowed mothers take up with other men. Elvis Presley reportedly didn't want to make love to his wife Priscilla after she had Lisa Marie because he was turned off by a woman who had gone through the "nastiness" of giving birth. And come to find out, he wasn't alone in his feelings. Why would you need statistics? Men commit more violence against women than each other, because women are easier targets. They are usually in close proximity and defenseless in a number of ways. And many women are financially dependent upon the men who abuse them. Men suck! |

Black men don't fit the profile of serial killers or terrorists. That's White boy shit. BUT, when I worked in the court system, most of the Black male defendants were there for drugs, robbery or domestic violence and quite a number of sexual assaults against Black women.
Of course White guys did/do this, too. But the majority of these cases, sadly, were Black male assailants against Black female victims. Does the system pursue Black male subjects more ambitiously than White male subjects who commit the same crimes? To a great degree, yes. But it's hard to dispute a Black woman on the stand testifying that her Black male attacker pistol whipped her, stabbed her, shot her or raped her and left her for dead. It's equally difficult to dispute expert medical testimony concerning Black women lying in comas and on life support because these Black males shot or stabbed or beat and/or raped them - but didn't quite finish the job - so they cling on to what life they have left. I don't think you can ENTIRELY blame the actions of these men on the system.
Statistically speaking, the majority of violent crimes committed against White women are at the hands of White men, and the majority of violent crimes committed against Black women are at the hands of Black men. That's fucked-up but, logically, how could it be any other way? |

The VAST majority of people - male AND female - who have issues with feminism and societal emasculation could never so much as THINK of doing what was done to those pure young Amish girls.
Maybe a more relevant question is why were AMISH foks were targeted. Because, hell, the killer might have driven by a dozen or more all-girl schools to reach Amish territory. |

I can understand the issue being raised to a point, but damn. Everybody is so sensitive around here, the chicks on here hate black men but then wine cuzz they can't get one. It's a vicious cycle and they dont see they are the one driving it as well as knuckleheads.

In physics, there's something called the Law of Enertia. It basically means that if a phyiscal body is moving in a certain - ANY - direction it will continue to move in that direction UNTIL until something of EQUAL or GREATER force acts upon it.

True. But they don’t see it that way. They seem themselves as unwitting helpless victims. They refuse to accept the reality that conditions they find themselves in, are a direct result of their own person decisions and vices. So, when they enter into these twisted masochistic relationships and end of up two, three, four…..children with a fool who can’t see beyond getting high and hanging out with his crew with their 40 ounces, they become embittered and lash out at all black men. Doesn’t matter if you personally have never beaten a black woman, gotten a black woman pregnant and walked away or had sex with her sister and three best friends, it is the black man (as a group) who is the enemy and a dog!
Not saying there are no abusive and pathological brothers out there, because that would be false. There are plenty of them to go around. But for a number of black women, their toxic vindictiveness and angst drives them to run down black men, as a group, at every and any opportunity. That’s why you have all this carping and foaming at the mouth by these scorned and deeply disappointed black women. But to be fair, the majority of black women who frequent this board are not caught up in this vortex of pathology and personal failure. The bellicose ranting and strident name calling comes from two to three at most, arrogant frustrated haters. The rest of the sisters here are pretty level headed and fair about the problems between black men and black women.
