NOT TRYING TO START NOTHING BROTHAS--BELIEVE ME!! PLEASE BELIEVE ME! ...THAT IS THE LAST THING I WANNA DO. I JUST THINK THIS ARTICLE IS OFFFFFF THE HOOOOOK!! ...THAT'S ALL. K? O-TAY THANKS. Sexism and Misogyny: Where My Brothas At? By Shawn M. Bediako, NNPA October 9, 2006 Recently, the University of Georgia placed Chi Phi fraternity on two year's probation after a group of seven freshman pledgees and a campus visitor showed nude pictures of Black women to passers-by on campus, photographing people's reactions. Public responses to the incident have been mixed, with some people questioning whether the incident was actually racially-motivated or whether the right to free speech protects the group's actions. However, my problems with this incident extend beyond mere intellectual banter. As a Black man, my racial identity makes me mad as hell at the fact that seven White boys were brazen enough to publicly show explicit pictures of Black women without fear of consequence. It conjures uncomfortable images of the historical exploitation of Black women by White men that is rarely discussed. As a social/community psychologist, however, I am perplexed by the fact that, to my knowledge, no public statement condemning the acts has come from Black fraternities, Black male faculty, or Black male administrators - either at UGA or any university. How could Black men be so silent on this issue? I dare say that there are probably more than a few Black men who are in possession of the same issue of Black Tail magazine that the Chi Phi pledges used to "shock" passers-by. These Black men are prime candidates for experiencing cognitive dissonance - thinking that it's wrong to objectify women as sexual instruments, but doing so because they like how what they see makes them feel. Therefore, how can Black men conscientiously condemn seven White boys for flashing nude pictures of Black women to others in public when Black men flash the same pictures to themselves in private? Something seems hypocritical about that, right? Yet, in order to avoid perceiving oneself as hypocritical - which exacerbates cognitive dissonance - one might react like Brandon Hall, president of the Black Affairs Council at UGA, who is quoted in the campus newspaper as asking, "Why didn't (the pledges) use a more mainstream magazine?" Hall's comment could be interpreted as insinuating that it would have been less controversial had the "Chi Phi Seven" used pictures of, say, White or Latino women. But, by making race a salient issue, the broader issue of sexism is relegated to the periphery and ignored. Yes, it is true that the sexist and misogynistic images that are widespread in media reflect an objectifying patriarchy that promotes and justifies an ambivalent, demeaning attitude of men towards women. And yes, it is also true that this is not a problem that uniquely affects Black men - it affects men of all races and ethnicities. So why am I choosing to focus on Black men's sexism and misogyny towards Black women? Why am I being so hard on Black men? There are two reasons. First, the ubiquity of sexism and misogyny means that Black men from all walks of life - athletes, clergy, entertainers, gangstas, intellectuals, laborers, politicians, professionals, and thugs - share a common problem that affects our communities: a problem that we must collectively address. It is shameful that organizations that have a "Black Male Agenda" or that have leadership comprised primarily of Black men - such as the Congressional Black Caucus, the National Baptist Convention, the NAACP, the National Urban League, and Concerned Black Men - do not do more to explicitly attack sexism and misogyny in Black communities. Second, I press the issue because the silence of both individual Black men and the organizations that supposedly represent Black communities becomes complicit in the degradation of women in general and increases the vulnerability of the image of Black women - making it easier for those both inside and outside our community to portray Black women in any way they see fit and not face repercussions. Would the Chi Phi frat boys have so easily flashed those photos if it was clear that Black men and Black organizations would have joined Black women in condemning their actions? Would Christina Norman (an African American woman and president of MTV Networks), permit the airing of a cartoon episode that depicts Black women as dogs on leashes (i.e., "bitches") if she thought that doing so would elicit a hue and cry from Black folks? It is crucial to understand that our silence about what people do to us and how they portray us is endorsement to those people that their actions are acceptable. The intergenerational transmission of sexism and misogyny is wreaking havoc on our young people, our families, and our communities. Researchers note that repeated exposure to crime, violence, and other suboptimal environments are not conducive for human growth and development. I further propose that repeated exposure to the less than respectful ways that many Black men refer to and treat Black women cannot be healthy for our children's growth and development. It shapes negative attitudes about gender roles, contributes to a poor self-concept, and creates a vicious cycle of unhealthy and destructive relationships that aid in destabilizing our families and communities. This is why I'm writing on the issue. We've got to do something about this. As a starting point, Black men must address issues related to sexism and misogyny by confronting the contradictions between what we say and what we do. Black civic and social organizations should facilitate a structured dialogue about these issues and make the elimination of sexism and misogyny prominent goals in their organizational aims. At the same time, Black men must be more vocal in challenging instances of sexism and misogyny that are directed towards Black women and Black girls wherever they occur - be it in commercials, television news and network "programs," movies, magazines, music videos, radio songs, or conversations in barber shops, schools, social spaces, workplaces, and, yes, even places of worship. Black men must, in clear non-patriarchal terms, confront the negative images of our people that are created and propagated by either corporate media or emboldened White frat boys. We must also take to task and hold accountable those individuals or entities within our community that perpetuate and profit from these negative images. Shawn M. I'm in love with MrGameShow - the way he cyber-stalks serenasailor is hilarious Also in love with Nuuon (sp?) - his conspiracy theories are priceless But Lil_ze takes the cake. He's real. He doesn't care about being politically correct or popular. He just puts his shit out there the way he sees it and the way he truly feels, and whoever doesn't like it - tough. I admire him for that. He's got balls. |

I look at Black Tail magazine and don't see nothing wrong with it. Why is homey trying to put down brothers for reading Black Tail? Don't white men have Penthouse and Playboy and even more outlets? That part of the article I'm not down with. I'm down with not seeing sisters disrespected in public like that though by anybody black or white.

By Nolafane I think what the brother is trying is say is "if we don't protect and defend our sisters who the hell will?" This is why we should be mad at the the brothers that let white boys continously drag our sisters through the mud and nothing is said or done about it. Then again these brothers probably have copies of Black Tail and objectify sisters themselves. When you place no value in your own women no one else will either. |

Schakspir is there not another way to celebrate the breath taking splendor of our sisters without cheapening them? Also does it make you less of a man if you possess the ability to appreciate our women's beauty without them having to shake what their there mommas gave them? Question, what is the Black Adult Entertainment industry doing to free our people from this dismissal condition of life called white supremacy? Not a damn thing. But with that same money that pays these cellophane and paper pimps we could create our own private schools in mass. We could create financial institutions that are geared to our specific needs. We could open a chain of grocery store in our neighborhoods that provide us with the nutrition we need. My point is with the money we misappropriate on bullshit could be used to build a nation. I don't say these things because I'm some holier-than-thou tight ass. I use to frequent strip clubs and I had my stash of pornographic material as well. When I added up what I was spending to entertain my sexual fascination I realized just how conditioned I was on improper uses of money. I have a family that needs my money more than these pimps. So bruh say what you want and see things as you may but we'll see how proud you are when you open up a Black Tail and your daughter is one of the featured models spreading her butt cheeks. Shit ain't funny or sexy now is it? If seeing that wouldn't bother you than you are beyond help. Brother I mean no disrespect to your family. All I'm saying is wake up. We are dying and no one seems to care. Most of all not even us. |

I don't care what yoll say! I love me some Black Tail and Big Black Butt just like my man said. There's nothing wrong with looking at pictures of hot sexy azz black women. What those peckerwoods did is a separate issue and did not belong in public. I also have enjoyed looking at their white girls in Playboy and Penthouse so I don't begrudge a white boy the right to buy Black Tail. However that is not what their public demonstration was about. None of this has anything to do with "porn" or misogyy. This whole thing was about race and was racially motivated.

Well said, Nolanfane. I couldn't agree more. It is perfectly healthy for men to want to look at women and buy the girlie mags. Hell, I've got two teen sons who are stashing them all around the house in the hopes that I don't find them. When I come across them, I don't say a word. I just leave them there and go about my business. At least my boys are looking at girls. That's healthy. That's normal. And they've got enough respect for me to try to hide them. Shit, I ain't gon' complain about none of that! But what the Chi Phi frat boys did wasn't about men admiring women's beauty or curves or "assets". That was about demeaning and denigrating Black women - intentionally, specifically, and premeditated. You can't compare what those punk ass White boys did to healthy, normal men enjoying skin mags.

Question, what is the Black Adult Entertainment industry doing to free our people from this dismissal condition of life called white supremacy? Not a damn thing. Same thing can be said about ANYTHING related to black culture...so what's the real difference here besides T&A? Black men, women and teens alike spend money on shit that won't help, or even is counter-productive to, our causes. As much money as we spend on Nike AF1s, do you see Nike coming into every hood with programs or grant money? As much money as we spend on hair weave, do you see the Asians pooling money together for Thanksgiving dinners for families? All I'm saying is, if it's good enough for one, it's good enough for all. |

Shouldn't the women that pose for nude pix worry about their image? What difference does it make who was looking at/displaying the pix and for what purpose??? Once you pose for a nude/obscene picture - what is done with it and who views it is no longer in your control. Why is anyone even defending this??? You can't protect the honor of the dishonorable. |

Mzuri, Ditto!!! It never ceases to amaze me how while crusaders like Shawn M. Bediako proudly cite the alleged misogyny of ALL of Black men YET they conveniently AVOID blaming the WOMEN who WILLINGLY allow their bodies and images to be exploited. I mean, some chick via her own volition goes booty up/out for Black Tail magazine, a cranka$$ cracker makes fun of the shyt...yet brothas who didn’t have ANYTHING to do with what either of them have done are BLAMED for what transpires from the shyt? Just seems grossly unfair to me. ESPECIALLY since we KNOW if do-gooder brothas attempt to thwart those sistas posing for Black Tail those chicks would b*tchslapped them with self-righteously cries of female freedom and liberation. |

Sidebar: I'm slowly sorting through the stuff of my dearly-departed husband, and, boy, did I come across a collection of nudie photos. Guess what? My first reaction was to breathe a sigh of relief, glad that they were pictures of naked women, not naked men. Or was I surprised at his appreciation for female anatomy. OK, everybody, - as you were. |

I think most men own nudie pix, girlie magazines and porn flix. I just don't know why they even bother to hide it. What's the big deal. It's not as if anyone's going to be jealous of that stuff. I wonder if they derive some additional pleasure in keeping it a secret - that forbidden fruit thing. |

Let me make myself clear. There is nothing wrong with black men admiring the black woman's anatomy. What I'm saying is following the examples of Hugh Hefner and Larry Flint is not the way to celebrate our sister's beauty. This sort of thing sets us up for the shit that happened in the article. White people need to fear us and see us as formidable not the damn butt of a joke. These white boys had no fear of reprisal for their actions. How the hell can we expect them not to disrespect our sisters if we don't respect our sisters? Who gives a damn if white boys find sisters sexually desirable? They have been ravaging our sisters for centuries. This is nothing new. If you ask me 1 second of them ravaging our sisters is a second too damn long. Why are we always seeking the white man's approval? By continually mimicking his actions we in effect are making him the standard that we continue to emulate. Some of us have done this for so long that we might as well be saying "if it ain't white it ain't right". We desperately seek the approval from white people. We are even willing to compromise our dignity just for a pat on the head from massa. This is why white boys don't fear us. The most valuable resource (if I can be allowed to call it that) of a civilization is it's women. If men and women are not allowed to co-exist in harmony then that nation will never rise. Brothers in order to build a strong black nation we must protect our women. It's can't be any plainer than that. |

You're supposed to be a full grown able-bodied man, "nolandfane", but you ain't shit. All you are is some sorry-assed somebody who sits in front of a computer too lame to be funny or interesting. I see why you have so much time on your hands because nobody would want to be bothered with an oaf like you in the real world. Now, chime in with your same old litany about "alzeimers" and "old-azz" and "clan-member". Yawnnnnnnnnnnnnn |

ABM You're missing the point. Being that the white man is our enemy we should expect nothing less than for him to make every effort to destroy us. However when we give the white man ammunition to use against us we in effect become the most immediate danger to ourselves. The brave new era will come when we start depending less on the benevolence of our enemy for our survive and start making a way for ourselves. This will not ever happen until black men and black women come together in a harmonious union moving in one direction. |

Mzuri I guess you want some too. From reading your threads we can also tell where your black consciousness is as well. One of the true signs of a fully domesticated Negro is when talk and plans of freedom and free thinking come about they would rather reject the notion and stay under the thumb of their master. It's like being a horse so afraid of it's freedom that when it's master leaves the gates the open the horse closes the gate and remains fenced in. Don't hate me because I have a plan that doesn't include Cooning and Bafooning. Don't hate me because I didn't come here to indulge in the common place bullshit we have grown accustomed to. Let's build not stagnate. I do realize that when we black people make our move the niggers will be left behind to suffer the consequences of voluntary second class citizenship. It has been said every brother ain't a brother. This is a sad but true statement.... |

UP - You are free to pontificate at your will, but please don't assume that you know anyone's entire life story simply because you read some of their "threads." You have no clue as to anyone's background, edumacation level, income, investments, upbringing, birth order, political affiliations, social status or anything else. So as I said previously - when it comes to making those types of assessments, or in predicting anyone's destiny, you'd do best to STFU. One of the true signs of a fully domesticated Negro Please elaborate because I don't know what a domesticated Negro is. Is that a Black person who went to college? Got a govt grant, loan or scholarship? Someone who is a land owner, home owner and is financially independent? Is that a person who resides indoors? Someone who doesn't plan on going back to Africa? What exactly is a domesticated Negro? And if you aren't one (a domesticated Negro), please expound upon what made you so. Thanks. |

Unpolitical, I agree with what you say about Black men and women liberating themselves of dependency from massah and of our pursuing harmonious, mutual-beneficial lives together. Whether I think we WILL ever make a valid, consistent and persistant effort toward such is another matter, altogether. Because the greatest enemy of Black people is BLACK PEOPLE. That always HAS been the case. And likely will always BE the case. |

Unpolitical: Schakspir is there not another way to celebrate the breath taking splendor of our sisters without cheapening them? Also does it make you less of a man if you possess the ability to appreciate our women's beauty without them having to shake what their there mommas gave them? Schakspir: "Cheapen"--you mean, show them naked? I am a heterosexual, I find naked women stimulating. Most heterosexual men do. This is biological reality. At the same time, as an artist, I can appreciate women in an aesthetic sense. But so can homosexuals or prudes. I have a right to enjoy a naked backside, and if you disagree, too bad. "Let me make myself clear. There is nothing wrong with black men admiring the black woman's anatomy." You "admire" black women's anatomy because--just perhaps?--you find it repulsive that anyone can be erotically stimulated by it?? "The most valuable resource (if I can be allowed to call it that) of a civilization is it's women. If men and women are not allowed to co-exist in harmony then that nation will never rise. Brothers in order to build a strong black nation we must protect our women. It's can't be any plainer than that." I don't believe a word of what you say. IN REAL TIME, you are horrified at the idea of seeing and BEING SEXUALLY AROUSED by nude women. Period. All the political caca is just rhetorical window-dressing. |

”Ntsf_encryption Oh so black consciousness bores you huh?” Excuse me? Where did that come from? Did I say that? Can you prove that? ”You would rather be entertained huh? The definition of the word "Entertain" according the American Heritage Dictionary is: To hold the attention of with something amusing or diverting. A synonym of the word "Entertain" is "Beguile".” Uhhhhhhhh……Are you smoking crack or is this an unsolicited irrelevant comment that just happened? You know, like a Tourettes Syndrome out burst. What does being entertained have to do with me? Did I ask for a definition of the word “entertained”? If so, please point it out for me. ”Continue to remain disillusioned.” Duuuuhhhhhh…??? Disillusioned about what? Your inability to stay focused or make accusations and statements about words that have nothing to do with my post? If anyone is disillusioned and struggling for relevant consistency, it’s you! So what am I supposed to be disillusioned about? Details please…. ”Oh I'm sorry I assumed you were black. If that is the not the case then I can understand how you would have no clue. But if you are and this how you feel you'll be steppin', fetchin', shinin' and shufflin' straight to the grave.” Really? I see…..ummmm…..let’s take a look at what you just said. It seems as if you made the assumption that I was black, but since I said something that you do not agree with, now, according to you –I am no longer black or never was black. Is this correct? And what makes me not black? Because you say so? Because you and I may disagree? Is that what makes me not black (in your opinion) –disagreeing with you? What exactly is it? This is so typical of pin heads like you, when it becomes obvious you disagree with someone, that person is no longer black. Right? Your scientific and infallible litmus test for so-called blackness is whether someone agrees with you, correct? Instead of debating the core issue of disagreement, you are compelled to make personal attacks by suggesting the person whom you do not agree with is not black! Uh huh…..Is that the best you can do? Since you cannot win a debate with the finer points of a solid or compelling argument, you have to take cheap shots by side stepping the argument (that you cannot win) by attacking the merits of a persons so called “blackness”. How convenient and easy is that? You have to run to your silly race card and accuse someone of not being black because they disagree with you. How desperate and weak can you get? Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Look, let me make a recommendation. Next time someone writes a counter statement to your post, rather than take unwarranted silly cheap shots at their so-called blackness (e.g. Uncle Tom, nigger, nigga, sell out, self hating, etc, etc..), just focus on your disagreement with their position and why their argument is faulty. Leave the tired and pathetic so called “you ain’t black” personal attacks to those who cannot put together a sensible argument or articulate a good counter statement. Ok…?

”NTFS - It's not so bad being told that you're no longer” The problem I have with that is it only happens when someone black disagrees with another black persons assertion or argument. Being black is irrelevant. One you’re born, it’s a done deal. Genetically, you’re black! This issue of blackness only becomes a contention when someone disagrees with another’s politics or thinking. George S. Schuyler was considered the first dean of black conservatives. Even though many blacks heatedly disagreed with his race politics regarding civil rights (including this writer) and racism, he was still a black man. He was a black man that many black people fiercely disagreed with (like Ward Connerly or Jesse Peterson). Being black cannot be given nor taken away. It’s the mans thinking and politics not his so-called blackness that should be in question. We are not a monolithic unyielding group think race. We have many varying degrees of political thought and belief –but we are still physically black. That’s the point –again, it’s the political differences that should be debated, not whether some one is black or not. That’s an absurd argument. ”Black. At least he didn't try to tell you that you're a domesticated Negro!!!” Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Naw, that wouldn’t work. Trust me!

Well, it was part interview, questions from listeners and they covered his surroundings and activities at home. I caught bits and pieces of it at around 0300 am! I read a fascinating article written by Nat Hentoff about Mr. Franklin in the Village Voice about 12 years ago. I'll never forget the story Hentoff told about Mr. Franklins life. You have no idea how much reverence and complete respect I have for the things that so many blacks endured and accomplished during the pre-civil rights era. The story of this man and his diligence and encounters with the most vile forms of racism is nothing short of fascinating. His recent biography is on my get this list(along with 100 other books) before the end of the year.

I read this autobiography earlier this year, NTFS. John Hope Franklin has, indeed, led a very accomplished life but the book was dry. It was like a looong resume. Almost like in order to steel himself from a repeat of the painful racism he encountered as a youth, Franklin built a shell around himself and, in doing so, lost his passion and zest. I would like to have read a biography of him by someone else, but he insisted on telling his own life story and the result is a structured chronicle rather than a vivid account. Of course it's no crime to be reserved and disciplined. I'd be interested in hearing your take on this book. |

Ah yes I'm glad to see people are riled up. That means we are thinking. Here is the deal. The main thing I need to know about anyone is if they are black or not. Among black people there are two progressive philosophies. One philosophy is the improvement of the standard of living of black people by working within the systems of white supremacy to satisfy the needs of black people. This philosophy is most commonly accepted by Black people especially African Americans because we feel it honors the efforts of our ancestors by striving for full inclusion into a white world. The trouble with this philosophy is unless you have the ability to manipulate the system you will always be bound by it's rules and the creators of such rules. At best under this philosophy the highest level one could ever hope to achieved is to be second from the top of the food chain. The other philosophy is the total separation from the system of white supremacy. This philosophy would require black people to form their own nation with it's own defenses, it's own currency, it's own commerce, it's own technology, it's own resources, it's own government, it's own education, etc.. This philosophy is unpopular with many blacks because of the centuries of intense conditioning at the hands of White Supremist. This was demonstrated quite well in the letter written by Willie Lynch in the 1700's. I am one who strives for separation, independence and self reliance. It doesn't matter if we are Doctors, Republicans, Democrats, Baptists, Frats, Sorors, Muslims, CRIPs, Vicelords or any other title that we have placed upon ourselves if whatever you have or are does nothing to separate us from white supremacy now or in the future to come then it's all in vain. I do know that not all black people will separate from white supremacy. Many of us truly believe that we need guidance or need to be led by someone. There will come a day when we must choose. Those who choose to stay in the world of white supremacy will be considered an enemy of black people. So where do we start moving toward a brighter future for black people? There is no better place to start then right in our own homes. I know these words are falling on deaf ears and uninspired minds. That's OK like I said ever brother ain't and ain't brother. Lastly if I have offended anyone with my comment I'm sorry you're offended. I'm not sorry for saying them. The truth only offends the guilty... |

Why is it that things pertaining to Black people always seem to air on C-SPAN in the middle of the night? Is it just me or have you noticed that too. Mr. Franklin seems interesting but I can't be reading any dry autobiographies. It's bad enough I crash out everytime I try to read something anymore. Especially when I'm already lying down. LOL. Maybe you could post a short article of his someday when you have the time, NTFS. I have found the pursuit of book collecting to be a life-long venture. I would advise to just chunk away at your wish list a little bit at a time - because you'll never complete it. As soon as you get that last book on your list, there'll be some new books that you just gotta have. Did I mention that I'm a bookworm? |

Interesting you should say this. I heard the exact same thing in an review earlier this year. The reviewer was looking for passion, intensity and something that one could emotionally bond with. But as you have suggested, the reviewer said the book was somewhat impersonal and suffered from emotional sterility. Instead of tasty tidbits of personal experiences and encounters, the book had as much personal and emotional appeal as an academic survey of plastic polymers. I really don’t know what to think now. Unfortunately, you are not alone in your assessment. And I think you are right because another reviewer (second) stated the same thing. It seems as if Mr. Franklin made a conscious effort to exclude any hints of compelling emotional or psychological experiences from the book. It appears as if the book was deliberately sanitized and excoriated of any passion. As I said, I’m somewhat taken back now. I almost wish I hadn’t read your post now. You just confirmed what I had previously heard but somehow blotted out of my mind. And to be honest, I do not have the patience nor time for dry and un-connected autobiographies. Oh well, what’s next…………

’Why is it that things pertaining to Black people always seem to air on C-SPAN in the middle of the night? Is it just me or have you noticed that too.” Not really. Most of the things I have seen are fairly spread out time wise. The Franklin interview was being played for the second time when I saw it. I missed the earlier showing which was around 0900 am. I tried to record as much as I could. ”Mr. Franklin seems interesting but I can't be reading any dry autobiographies. It's bad enough I crash out everytime I try to read something anymore. Especially when I'm already lying down. LOL.” I hear ya babe. I can’t deal with dry and tedious boring material either. ”Maybe you could post a short article of his someday when you have the time, NTFS.” Hmmmmmmm…ok. Perhaps I can find that archived article I have that was written by Nat Hentoff and post it. I think you would appreciate what this man endured. ”I have found the pursuit of book collecting to be a life-long venture. It’s so bad, 3/5 of all my possessions at home are books. Yes, I’m a sick man. I know it. But at least my vice is victimless and good for the economy. ”Did I mention that I'm a bookworm?” Yes, just now. Welcome to the addiction. Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha!

Ntfs, I've not read John Hope Franklin's autobiography. But I did watch much on his 3-hour C-SPAN interview last week. One thing he said during the interview that stood out to me was his saying that African American girls are given help and assistance to succeed than African American boys and that that is manifesting in the burgeoning disparities between sistas and brothas. Since he did not really go into much detail on that point, I don't know whether I'd wholly agree with it. But I DEFINITELY think the prevails schooling paradigms favor female over male. And the effect of such is even beginning to manifest with Whites and Hispanics girls doing better in school than their male peers. |

Abm, right off the bat, I am inclined to believe that this has more to do with the way boys and girls are socialized. Girls are expected to behave a respond more favorably to authority. Can't you see how that would play out in a school setting? |

Tonya, I partly agree with you. But I ALSO think that boys and girls innately differ. Thus I think there are times were when those differences should be accounted for within how they're being educated...especially if/and when other sociological factors (e.g., high fatherlessness) effect the experiences and mindset of the children. |

And no when I'm being serious and passionate about something I can't take a joke. Mzuri Who are you telling to "STFU"? You don't know me like that. Besides my comment didn't involve you. Also a domesticate Negro is one who rather live in captivity than take his/her chances free and on their own. Domestication is about conditioning. The soon as you realize you are conditioned the sooner the process of un-conditioning will begin.. Shakspir To measure a mans masculinity by how many girly magazines he has is like measuring a mans masculinity by how thug or gansta he can be. We as black men should see our black women's body as sacred an only worthy of those who are deserving. We cheapen her by giving every clown that comes along full access. There should be no market for this and our sisters shouldn't market themselves either. I'm not opposed to any image of our sister displaying their beauty. I just stopped at the JET beauty of the week. White men see our sisters as an oddity and a fetish at the same time. The white man's idea of beauty is a woman with a body like a teen aged boy with boobs. This goes back to his Greek ancestry. He is mesmerized at the image of a real woman with curves. He is still undeserving and never will be. |

”No we don't have to agree but we can do so respectfully.” I agree. Thank you for the response. I have no problems with civil discourse. ”I would have rather you made no comment about my comment than to yawn and ask about the Wire as if I was joke. ” No, I don’t think you are a joke. I don’t know you well enough to make an assessment like that. But I responded to every line you wrote and I explained my postion (Posted on Friday, October 13, 2006 - 05:42 pm). You also need to understand that anything you post is subject to ridicule, disagreement and accolades. That’s just the way it is. ”And no when I'm being serious and passionate about something I can't take a joke. ” Understood. But let me make a suggestion, do not take anything personal that is posted on this board. If you do, there is the possiblilty your feelings will always be hurt or you may experience a lot of consternation and frustration. Just a suggestion. Again, don’t take any of this personal!

UP - And you most certainly don't know me or anyone else here well enough to dispense with the comments/judgments you have made. I can promise you that I'm about the last Negro that anyone would consider as "domesticated." And if you continue to talk out of your ass without knowing whom you are addressing or what you are talking about - I will tell you that you would do best to STFU. I don't give a care if you were addressing me directly or not, I am NOT just going to sit back and let you insult my fellow boardies. There ain't no got damn body around here steppin', fetchin', shinin', shufflin', shuckin' and jivin' except for perhaps you. |

”There ain't no got damn body around here steppin', fetchin', shinin', shufflin', shuckin' and jivin' except for perhaps you.” Thank you! You’re right and I’ve said this also before; “There are no Uncle Toms or shufflin’ grinning house Negroes on this board –just black people who do not always agree on certain subjects.” If you have noticed, when certain individuals disagree with another individuals position, they must be labeled Uncle Toms, house Negroes, race traitors, domesticated and the like. How exactly does that work? Why does race have to be the central core of the accusation as a result of disagreement? Only black people do this if you have noticed. It works like this: ”If you disagree with me, then you hate yourself and you’re a proxy and dupe for the white man. That’s your punishment for not agreeing with me! End of subject”. Duuuuhhhhh….?? They have no proof of such silly accusations and name calling but it seems to be the only knee jerk defense they have. Very sad. But when your argument is weak and shaky, I guess the only recourse they feel they have is bogus and irrelevant racist name calling.

NTFS - I'm all for the freedom of speech, and you know I talk my share of shizit, but I can't get over the nerves of some of the newbies that come to this forum to tell the rest of us all about ourselves. Or these captain-save-a-negro people. Unless they just came here to stir up some crap, would you think they'd want to make nice for a couple of days before they start bashing people. I don't really mind being insulted, just don't take to someone branding me as oppressed when they haven't an inkling. |

Ntfs I don't take things too personally. So I hope you don't take it too personally either when I make comments about race since it not about race. Mzuri Whatever. We can tear each other down or we build. It doesn't matter to me. BTW I know not all black people can, will or want to be saved. Also I am no ones messiah. In fact I don't think we need one. What matters is having intelligent conversation that poses solution to the dilemma we as a people face on a daily basis. Again this thread is about how white boys see us as a joke and we do nothing to dispel their notions. It's takes the white man to reprimand himself so that we may stay castrated. I would very much like to hear from either one of you about how we as individuals going forward should react and what changes if any we can make to the wrong of these types of situations? |

At the age of 73, I have come to the conclusion that there's the real, actual world, and then there's the world as it is encapsulated in words and it all depends on who is uttering the words as to how things appear to be. Words are, after all, just sounds and syllables, tools to describe what our eyes see and our brains filter, which means that words capture rather than liberate. As accepted as it is to elevate a spokesman to articulate grievances, nobody can speak for everybody. We all populate our own little worlds that have evolved from our personal experiences. If we endeavor to formulate our own ideas, we really do become the "captains of our ships and the masters of our fate". If people would just energize their own personal power, they would emerge from "the night that covers them black as the pit for pole to pole" and indeed "thank whatever gods may be for their unconquerable soul(s)". The truth is the light. And those, of course, are the "words" that I live by. zzzzzzzzz |
