Oprah's show today focused on women coping with growing older. One of her guests was 71-year old Diahnn Carroll. And if anyone was ever a living testament to the role good genes play in the aging process, or a striking contradiction to the idea that all women in their 70s are either little grey-haired grannies baking brownies, or wrinkled old hags on the brink of Alzeimers, Diahann is it. She and countless others like her are proof that age is just a number and it's all about attitude, which is surely why the mavens who dictate such things have declared that 70 is the new 60, and 60 is the new 50, and 50 is the new 40, and 40 is the new 30. Actresses like 69-year-old Jane Fonda and 72-year-old Shirley MacClaine and the still-gorgeous 88-year-old Lena Horne are others who belie the stereotypical myths about older women. Since I've been subjected to the endless carping about colorism that is a staple on this board, I'm taking this opportunity to call attention to how the ageism is also practiced here by those who can't come up with intelligent rebuttals. |

Don't mind these youngsters. They just don't realize how quickly the years fly by and how soon they themselves will be "old." I'm watching O today - unless ALZ sets in and I forget about it between now and 4:00 o'clock. LOL! |

I just wrote an article about ageism for Blade Magazine(October issue). Also, I assist a director here in Long Beach with her latest documentary entitled "Look Us In The Eye: The Old Women's Project of San Diego. It's about three politically active women that are combatting ageism. |

Thanks Cynique. Your commentary is so true. IT'S ALL IN THE GENES! "Don't mind these youngsters. They just don't realize how quickly the years fly by and how soon they themselves will be "old."" This is also true. You never spoke the truth like this Mzuri. Time flies. Ya just don't notice until you start going to your high school reunions! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! |

NTFS - I always speak the truth I watched this for a little while. I wish Geena Davis would drop off the face of the earth. And that other woman was about as interesting as the man in the moon. But Miss Carrol has got it going on!!! The whole show should have just been about her. |
