A black male friend of mine says that he has noticed that BLACK women as well as white women clutch their handbags tighter when he is approaching and he finds it really upsetting. When he's going to and from job he is wearing a pinstripe suit and says that fewer women clutch their handbags when she is dressed like that. When he is dressed casually in baggy jeans, sneakers and sweatshirt, he says that just as many black women as white hold their handbags close. I get the feeling that even more women would be clutching onto their handbags if he was also wearing a do-rag. |

Not necessarily.
I always hold everything tighter/lock doors when I'm near the Ponce De Leon/Moreland Ave. intersection near the Clermont Hotel. I don't care who's walking by. Even women. |

Also, near Ponce and North Avenue.
I don't know why, but Ponce seems to be a magnet for the mentally ill, junkies, and punks.
LOL....there was one time I was watching COPS in Atlanta, and there was a guy having sex with a prostitute outside in the daylight.
The cops came over and was talking to them. I said to my husband, "they're either on Ponce or North Avenue".......minutes later, the guy said to the cop that he wasn't doing anything. He then pointed and said, "I'm on my way to work right over here on the corner of Ponce and North Avenue." LOL |

I remember once (in the 80s) when my grandfather was 72 and I took him grocery shopping. We parked then made our way to the supermarket. As we approached the market we passed by a White lady (60-ish) and a younger man (son?) who were just getting out of their car. This White woman looked up at my grandfather then shouted to her son(?) "Lock the doors!"
My grandfather said to her, "Hey, lady, even if I did steal something from your car, how the hell am I supposed to run away with it!"
Obviously, she didn't see an elderly man when she looked at my grandfather. All she saw was Black, which in her lily white mind automatically made him a criminal.
Me, I don't hold my pocketbook tighter when I see grown men. But I do tend to hold on to it tighter when I see teenagers. I think this generation has gone to the dogs and I really don't trust teenagers who I'm not familiar with, which is sad because two of my four sons are teens and I always wonder if other people, my age and older, react the same way when they bypass my boys. |

I know what you mean. But at the same time a lot of adults don't see teens as a threat. The whole snot-nosed-kid-I'll-put-him-over-my-knee-if-he-even-THINKS-about-trying-some-shi t. I think women overall are more leery of teenage boys than men are. My two teenage sons are already bigger than me and can pick me up.
As far as race is concerned, I don't doubt that when most Whites see my teen sons they automatically assume "thug" simply on the basis of their being Black and nothing more; just as the case with my grandfather. |

I'm not suggesting that ALL adults automomically view teens to be threats. But there sure is ENUFF of such thinking to make this worthy of note and discussion.
I, btw, am EVERYBIT as weary of a group of White boys as most White people are of a group of Black boys.

Really? You say; "....they (whites) more likely to kill (blacks) than they were back then." Uh huh, so whites are killing blacks at greater numbers today than let’s say in the South back in the 30's, 40's, 50's and 60's? I see. And you have evidence to support this correct?
