I've been to Nigeria and Benin and various countries in southern Africa, including Botswana and Zim. All experiences were amazing. I found the people warm and friendly and kind. The black people in the South, in America, remind me a bit of African people. So, nobody else on this board has been to Africa? |

Yes, in 1999. One of my exes is from Ghana. He took me to his country to meet his mom who still lives there. While in Ghana, we also visited two of the neighboring countries: Togo and Benin. It was a wonderful experience; I wish we could've stayed longer. I encountered some of the warmest, most hospitable people I've ever met. Most of them didn't have much but were happy and quick to share whatever they had. And the cuisine's delicious - spicy, just how I like it. I'd love to go back someday and see more of the continent. |

I wish I could go. A friend of mine married a guy in Ghana and lived there for a while. She was young (maybe 21 or so) and came back with her husband (and new son) only because her parents were freaking out about her staying there. She goes back to visit quite often. I would like to visit Ghana, Gambia, Senegal, Ivory Coast, and Cameroon. |

I hear that the people in Africa eat a lot of okra, black-eyed peas, and fish. Is that true? Sounds like the south to me. |

Urban Scribe, I think that black american people are the only colored people in the world who don't eat spicy food as the norm. |

Not true Renata. In a lot of African countries like Cameroon, Sudan, Chad, Botswana--they don't eat spicy foods hardly ever. Especially "groundnut" countries.

I think you might be on to something, Renata. Although I do notice in Southern and South Western states that Black Americans do favor food with quite a bit of zest, overall I think you're right that most Black Americans don't care for spicy food. Not to be disgusting, but I've heard a few Black people say that if it goes in hot it's gonna come out hot. LOL! So maybe that's why so many avoid it. And yes, a number of the dishes were made of okra. I had to pass on those because I hate okra. Too slimy. But the bean and nut dishes were exceptional. There was a peanut and cassava soup that I've been trying to perfect for years. It is heavenly. I'll have to ask my ex the name of it again in Twe. What I found surprising was that the majority of the dishes were vegetarian. |

Nolanfane, well, thanks....that's news to me. I always assumed we don't each much spicy foods here because we're so removed from our original culture and season our food like white people. I used to HATE collard greens.....and then I met a Nigerian woman who taught me how to cook them (with LOTS of cayenne, and maybe 1/3 cup of water and a lot of oil and powdered shrimp) and now I can't get enough of them! I didn't dislike the greens, I just disliked the American way of cooking them. But no matter how much cayenne I add, I can never get them as spicy as she did.....DAMN, how much pepper did she put into that stuff?!!! |

I live in Africa (Kenya) and love it. Urban_scribe: Okra is a delicious dish if you know how to cook it without it being slimy. You first of all have to cut the okra into small pieces. Then deep fry it all by itself. Then make a nice sauce with onions, garlic, spices, etc and then add the fried okra into the sauce. Thats the trick to make non-slimy okra. Anything else you want to know about??? One thing fo sure, don't come to Africa with your foul mouth cussing, etc. thinking that you are all that, you will be very lonely and will end up taking the first plane back to Amerikkka. I usually see many AA's here either in the company of other AA's or with white folks, they don't really know how to relate with Africans. SAD. |

Anunaki3600 wrote Urban_scribe:...Anything else you want to know about??? Yes, I'd like to know why your tone is so hostile. I made a simple statement that I don't care for okra because of its sliminess and you come off like gang busters without warrant. If you had a recipe to offer to counteract the texture of okra, all well and good. You should have left it at that. I understand that all the sliminess is actually very healthy. Okra is loaded with fiber and if you're ever constipated, okra is the way to go. A big old bowl of okra soup - not fried - should solve that problem. It's a natural laxative. But I can't stand the sliminess of okra because it looks like a big bowl/plate of snot. Last time I recall eating okra I was 7. I found it disgusting and I've never gone near it since in over 30 years now. So, I seriously doubt that I'll try it again any time soon - no matter who cooks it, how it's cooked or where it's cooked. My mother loves okra and prepares it regularly. My brother eats it. My father eats it. ME - I DON'T LIKE OKRA. Is that all right with you? I wasn't aware that I needed your permission or concensus to dislike okra. Please stay in KKKenya. |

Anunaki, something you wrote struck me: I usually see many AA's here either in the company of other AA's or with white folks, they don't really know how to relate with Africans. SAD. Tell me, why would a Black American know how to relate to an African if the BA has never been to Africa? I admit it, I don't know the first thing about Africa (except what I have read about or have been told). Like I'll read some of Kola's past posts and some of them have me confused. Not that I think she's full of shit but because being Westerized - and that is the ONLY way I know how to be - I don't relate to the concepts and practices SHE is accustomed to. So no, I don't know if I would relate on any cultural level. I don't know if I'll feel out of place but dammit, I probably would be a little naive on certain things. Some stuff I may find ridiculous and others I may envy but I do know that I can certainly understand when an America black does not relate to Africa or things that are African. |

Well, it would help if BA wouldn't mind meeting Africans HERE. There are enough Africans here and they're happy to tell BA more about Africa. |

That is so pitiful that Black Americans would have some sort of aversion to meeting Africans. That is a damn shame. I wonder what the reason would be? I do know that Africans that come here for school usually stick together because they are not familiar with the culture and feel out of place which is understandable. Not all Africans are open to share about their culture and experiences in Africa. Many don't want to bother with some of the facetious questions and mocking undertones, even if the questions are valid, non-ostracizing and genuine from the questioner. Face it, when folks don't know something, the dumber the questions are. I can see why feel as though certain questions are full of shit.

"yes, yes, please let the wise and mighty african come to america and teach the black americans". the africans have nothing to teach our people here. ive been to liberia twice. the africans have been waging a war against our people who left america and settled liberia. this war has included the rape and murder of our women and little girls. the mass execution of hundreds of our people at a time. the fire bombing of the homes of our people there. and the murder of the last black american decsended president of liberia. gee, i wonder why more black americans have an aversion to dealing with africans? other than sell our people to the arabs and europeans as slaves, what the hell has africa or the africans EVER done for black americans, west indians, etc? africans have zero to teach our people here. our people know it. this is why we generally ignore the african. the africans are not "whats happening". our people are the special people. |

All African people are special that includes Afro carribeans, Afro Brazillians, African Cubans, AA's etc. We are all special. Stop fighting like little lost and confused chidren. Don't you know? White people love it when we fight becuase then we don't see who the real enemy is. Africans on the continent of Africa need to stop saying bad things about African Americans and AA's need to stop getting on the defense and being tit for tat. We need to love each other and help each other out Cause united we stand and divided fall.My brothers and sisters, we have been falling for to long. |

I've been to Benin (lived there for the first half of my life), Senegal, Togo, Cote D'Ivoire. Abidjan used to be my favorite city before the death of Houphet-Boigny. I love West Africa.
