I saw Kola Boof today at First A.M.E. church rehearsing for her upcoming tour with a vocal coach. She was singing the Everly Brothers song "Dream" a capella and she sounded like a mix between Diana Ross and Erykuh Badu. She sings very high pitch and drunk but she sounds good, a lot like Diana Ross. A chill went down my spine when she sang this incredible African song. She had some kind of plastic surgery because parts of her face were bandaged up and she was much skinnier than I expected but very shapely. She was wearing a huge Afro wig (it had to be a wig that big) and she was with Keidi the L.A. radio host who kisses her ass on his show every chance he gets. Him being so light skinned I don't know how he calls her the greatest black writer of the 21st century "so far"--but that's how he introduces her. They were videotaping Kola singing so she can watch it and then practice how to move on camera. She was being a bitch wanting everything "planned" and "staged" just right. I wasn't able to talk to Kola, she was emotional and bitchy not talking to anyone, but since I do book reviews for L.A. WEEKLY they gave me a preview sample of her upcoming poetry collection, "The White Man's Mother". I have to admit that what I've read so far has blown me away. Really powerful stuff. I might start liking her. |
