Beyoncé Knowles has sparked controversy by saying she only makes records for black people. Since the 'Déjà Vu' singer made the astonishing statement sales of her new album, 'B'Day', have fallen by 70 per cent in the US. Beyoncé, 25, said in an interview with Blender magazine: "I make black records. I write records like I speak, and I don't try to change my songs so everyone else likes them." The singer has also admitted she can relate to celebrities who attack the paparazzi. Beyoncé said: "It must be really scary to have your children in front of all these people. That's your kids. That's when Mama Knowles is gonna be punching some photographers!" Meanwhile, Beyoncé's name was booed at the MOBO awards in London on Wednesday night (20.09.06) when she failed to turn up to collect her three prizes. The 'Crazy In Love' singer received the most awards after her single 'Déjà Vu' won the Best Song and Best Video categories and she was named Best International Female at the ceremony - which recognises music of black origin. http://news.google.ca/news?hl=en&q=beyonce%20%22black%20music%22&btnG=Search&sa= N&tab=wn Commentary: What I find fascinating with this is that she actually used the word "Black" at a time when "mixed-race" and "I'm not really Black" fanatics are getting their air time. There mere utterance of the word "Black" around someone who is "mixed-race" sends them screaming for the hills. Black, Black, Black, Black ....I LOVE this word like I LOVE the a forest in the summertime - fresh, reinvigorating, life. I honestly thought she was "whitewashed" but for her to reveal her subconscious thinking in the tongue in cheek way she did is awesome. Here is an example: Keanue Reeves is taken for white and no one ever says "well, he's not really white, he's half Lebanese" but when someone not "stereotypically west African" is called black people will say "NOWAY, that person must have some other blood, you're just too pretty, please don't call yourself black, please!" and I find this hilarious. Black is the only race people will say "No you're not black, you have to be 100% black (whatever this means) to be Black!!" Even Indians don't get that type of treatment. I don't see people going around saying "No, you're not Indian because you're not 100%." Of course Kola (don't fret because I support all of what you say 95%) will have a fit with what I'm saying , and I fully support the Authentic Black Woman, but I just want to know why must Black be the only race where you must be 100% (however you define this) or people won't accept that? In every other race there is no sqabbling about percentages. In fact, Black is the only race which blood is treated as a sort of sin in that you have terms like "quadroon", "octoroon" and none of these terms are used in the same manner for other races. Like, if someone is quarter Japanese, they are .. quarter Japanese, not "quadroon." If you're 50% or more Black, you marry Black, and you support Blacks, what is the problem? |

What about her new song "Creole"? In it, she sings about her pride of being a Creole. Sounds to me that this is more what she identifies as. Perhaps with all the criticism from the black community over the song "Creole" and their lukewarm response to the new cd she decided to re-identify. One thing for sure. You have to be 100% white to be white. Japanese is not a color neither is Indian. I've never seen white people refer to Keanu Reeves as white. Blacks do that. BTW--I consider Beyonce to be black woman as well.

Beyonce's new cd is far from lukewarm. It had a huge opening, selling about 500,000 it's first week, and now after two weeks its platinum. That's pretty superb. |

Enchanted said: "What about her new song "Creole"? " Hmm ..... this is new to me... http://www.completealbumlyrics.com/lyric/130910/Beyonce+-+Creole.html I will say this, and this can get very complicated -one can be Black and affirm their proudness for being Black - but I doubt there is any Black person whose identity squarely rests on being Black(in and of itself). There has to be a culture that you are associated with, a glue that holds you together. I.e. for the most part I can't just walk up to another Black person and just instantly bond with them. For example, I have an African identity yet I am still Black. Or you can be Columbian and Black. I think in the United States, it's hard for someone to be "American Black" because there is no such thing as "American" culture. But someone can be Black Haitian, Carribean, Brazilian Black, etc ..I think "Creole" is a culture that Beyonce belongs, too. I, however, don't know the implications Creole culture has for either denying or affirming a Black identity. What I am trying to say, perhaps poorly, is that one can be Black, but practically, he belongs to some sort of culture. (bear with me because I've never lived among Black people ever so maybe I am not seeing something here) |

Well, regardless of what race you are, or what type of music you prefer - you must realize that you can't segregate music. And you can't separate who is going to listen to what. My Father (who is a full-blooded Black man) listens to country music. White people country music. He listens to Black artists as well, but when he's riding around alone in his truck - I'm 99.99% positive he's listening to some country. I prefer the R&B, soul, jazz and most of my collection and music listening is towards Black music. But I listen to some white artists as well - Sting, Michael Franks, Stevie Nicks, Kenny G, Steve Khan, Boney James, Herb Alpert, Sergio Mendez and many others. IMO Beyonce making such a divisive statement is problematic. I commend her for asserting her Black pride, but she's got to know that such a blanket statement would be offensive to a major portion of her buying public. Unless she just stopped giving a care about her record sales. That's always a possibility I suppose. |

Mzuri thanks for putting things better than I could have. That was on my mind but I didn't know how to say it without being misunderstood. I like Beyonce's music and the sister is beautiful BrownBeauty123 but her new album is doing sluggish compared to her last one. Ngo, since you have never lived around Creoles, I think you should do some internet research on them as it refers to being "mixed" with black, Portuguese and French. You are very wrong about America having no culture. "African-American" culture is American culture and it is different from the Caribean, South America and Africa. Blacks in the U.S. have very unique culture. Black skin and hair texture are different from sharing a culture IMO. White people can grow up completely immersed in black culture yet they will not be treated as those who look black. Thandie Newton is an African but she does not identify as black. Her portfolio says biracial and she introduces herself as biracial. I don't think the culture itself is strong enough to overrule our physical appearance and I think people like Kola are jealous that they can only be seen as black and nothing more so they strike out at people like Beyonce unfairly. Beyonce is Creole and can claim black too so she has more territory to rule.

I do not believe that album sales have decreased by 70% just because of something she said in Blender magazine. Blender is not even a particularly widely-read magazine. Now, if she had made these comments in People or on Oprah, I might have believed you. Good for you Beyonce for realizing that you are a black woman! Maybe oneday soon Beyonce will rip out her blonde white-girl-weave and reveal her real hair while performing on stage, just the way that Erykah did at the Dave Chappelle Block Party. |

Most Louisiana Creoles still speak with a French accent and have some French words peppering their language. Many of them even have French surnames. There are also a good many who will only marry other creoles, cajuns, or hispanics. They have a very different culture from Mississippi Creoles who still look Creole and even have the surnames, but don't have the rest of the "Creole" culture and are closer to non-Creole blacks. Whenever I hear that she's Creole, I just wonder what area she's from. Maybe her sales are decreasing because her "steadily growing older" fanbase isn't as into buying CD's as they were when they were younger? That happens. |

Read the article. I saw nothing negative about what she said AT ALL. Good for her. Glad to hear that she has a little pup too. How come all these celebrities have a little Chihuaha or Maltese or Shih-Tzu? |

Actually, no. The wind blew it back from her hairline then she grabbed it with her hand and just tossed it away. The wind didn't blow it off completely. |
