I got this from another messageboard but its refreshing to hear about

"I thought this was an interesting and probably healthy development in the world of fashion.

www.cnn.com/2006/WORLD/eu...index.html

Skinny models banned from catwalk

MADRID, Spain (Reuters) -- The world's first ban on overly thin models at a top-level fashion show in Madrid has caused outrage among modeling agencies and raised the prospect of restrictions at other venues.

Madrid's fashion week has turned away underweight models after protests that girls and young women were trying to copy their rail-thin looks and developing eating disorders.

Organizers say they want to project an image of beauty and health, rather than a waif-like, or heroin chic look.

(jump)

The Madrid show is using the body mass index or BMI -- based on weight and height -- to measure models. It has turned away 30 percent of women who took part in the previous event. Medics will be on hand at the September 18-22 show to check models."

Good. I was very glad to hear this story. A friend of mine sent it to me a few days ago.

yeah, it's crazy that they werent going by body mass index, waist to hip ratio and proportion in the first place because that's the way REAL women are shaped.....not like boys.

makes no sense why people ever brought into the skinny woman look. i never could get why you have so many women so obsessed with gettign rid of their natural hips, thighs and buttocks. I also dont get what the small calve muscle craze is all aobut either.

Misty,

BRAVO for the Spanish fashion community. It's about TIME somebody stood up to the INSANITY that's been perpetrated.

Who the HELL decide that looking like a Nazi concentration camp prisoner is attractive, anyway?

I know some out there won't like this, but I HONESTLY think the starving waif-look is a product of there being to many GAY men running the fashion world. Because, really, what STRAIGHT man don't wanna see (at least a little) curves, tits and a$$ on a woman?

I remember watching that Tyra model show a year or two ago. They were going to some designer's shop to audition for a fashion show. One girl (who had insecurity issues anyways and already had an eating disorder) was told that she was too fat and "hippy" for his clothes.

And, no, she wasn't the obligatory plus-sized model, but one of the regular models.

I personally just think they design their clothes a particular way out of LAZINESS. Why produce clothing in a variety of sizes when you can make just one or two sizes and only hire people who can fit into that size?

Models are considered "clothes hangers". It not about their bodies, it's about how the designer creations look on their bodies. But it can't be denied that the fashion industry created a monster with its fixation on thiness.

The models that are considered healthy in that industry still resemble a bunch of skelewhores. Honestly, I can't tell the difference between what's considered too thin, and healthy by fashion standards. Normally, most high fashion runway models are still too skinny.

Renata,

You may have a point there about the designers being LAZY. Yeah. If they only have to make one or 2 dress sizes and types, there's much less work to do.

Still. I think it's GAY men who are perpetuating this starving wretch look.

I've watched A LOT of Tyra's modeling show to. And you can see how contemptuous those gay assistants and associates are of T&A.

I think there's sort of perverse resentment-envy thing those gay guys have for women that manifests in what they do with and to those women.
