Okay now. But how many Black foks would AGREE with Mr. Young?
I, for one, WOULD!
And I hope the hoopla made over what Young say inspires Black foks to think a little more deeply about how, where and with whom they SHOP.

The civil rights leader Andrew Young, who was hired by Wal-Mart to improve its public image, resigned from that post last night after telling an African-American newspaper that Jewish, Arab and Korean shop owners had "ripped off" urban communities for years, "selling us stale bread, and bad meat and wilted vegetables.
In the interview, published yesterday in The Los Angeles Sentinel, a weekly, Mr. Young said that Wal-Mart "should" displace mom-and-pop stores in urban neighborhoods.
"You see those are the people who have been overcharging us," he said of the owners of the small stores, "and they sold out and moved to Florida. I think they’ve ripped off our communities enough. First it was Jews, then it was Koreans and now it’s Arabs."
Mr. Young, 74, a former mayor of Atlanta and a former United States representative to the United Nations, apologized for the comments and retracted them in an interview last night. Less than an hour later, he resigned as chairman of Working Families for Wal-Mart, a group created and financed by the company to trumpet its accomplishments..."

That's old news, Jewish, Italian, Greek, Korean, Arab shopkeepers have been doing it for decades. And so have BLACK shopkeepers, by the way. |

I'm on a black forum discussing black issues (the good & bad) in hopes that we can begin looking inward to make the necessary changes BEFORE we call ourselves blowing someone else out for the same STUPID DUMB SHIT that we do to our own IGGG-NANT ASS SELF-HATE'N ASININE SELVES.

If Black foks would not HATIN' on each other and actually SUPPORT the means by which we might be able to create and maintain wealth, maybe we can build institutions, support systems, etc. that enforce better, higher standards of business, behavior, ethics, etc.
But if we're all BROKE AS HELL - MOSTLY because we give our money, effort and faith to every dayam body ELSE but our own - who the hell gone listen you?
Moreover. If YOU know a better way of running a grocer, why don't your a$$ START one and help feed some Black foks...you most (self-)Righteous Black woman. |

But you said so yourself, Abm. "If Black foks would not HATIN' on each other"...all else would fall into place. It's not going to work if we try to do it the other way around - backwards. And it's not just you. It seems like it's all black men....You guys think that fixing the black economy is the answer to our prayers. I submit that you won't fix the black economy UNTIL you atleast begin to do something about the hate. That's just the way it is - for every family, team, nation or racial group. I’m not saying they all LOVE each other but there’s some kind of cohesion, and usually there's some REAL sense of pride.

That's why we BLACK people need to have ownership. Whining about how the Jews, Arabs, Koreans, Chinese, Japanese, Italians, Greeks and Germans are selling us rotten food in our own neighborhoods is straight up stupid. If your local shop sells outdated overpriced food, then don't shop there. And if there's absolutely no place else to shop then order your food from AMAZON.COM or form a food co-op. Organize the community and put the local shop out of business. There's no excuse for accepting this! |

Haven't you heard? That's not always the case, even when a BROTHA or SISTA is in charge. Of course this depends on how you are defining "brothas" and "sistas." Now, if you’re advocating that we do our damnedest to empower AUTHENTIC brothas and sistas who are interested in breeding & uplifting--first and foremost--other AUTHENTIC brothas and sistas...THEN BELIEVE ME...absolutely no arguments here!

You guys sound like you live in some jacked-up neighborhoods. I LOVE my neighborhood (Cascade/Ben Hill/Hamilton Holmes/Greenbriar area, near Camp Creek). The majority of the businesses are black owned and operated, often by college educated black/African/Carribean people. There are two daycare centers within walking distance of where I live and the directors are black as are all of the staff. I can get everything from fried fish to burgers to health food to Jamaican food without even driving 20 miles. And there's no dust on the food in the stores, and I would much rather go to the stores here than in the Hispanic/Vietnamese neighborhoods, where they do have that problem. I can walk up the street at midnight without being bothered or afraid. And you wouldn't even know children lived in this neighborhood if you didn't see them either in the area pools or waiting for the school bus. There are some Chinese restaurants, but asians here don't run all of the businesses...mostly just a minor number of restaurants.
We do have maybe 15 or so neighborhood associations that I'm sure have something to do with keeping standards up.
And these aren't rich people at all. Well, not the people who LIVE here anyways. Magic Johnson owns 3 businesses here, but he doesn't live here.
I do wish there was a Thai or Indian restaurant in this area, but other than that, I love living in a black neighborhood. |

And I don't know what's up with Mr. Young. He's FROM Atlanta, he KNOWS that black businesses here are good and a very good alternative to Wal-Mart.
I think he was just doing his "job" for the company in trying to promote them.
If HE, of all people, doesn't know where to find good food at a black owned business, he just isn't even trying to look for it. |

Oh, sorry...re-read the article. He complained about Arab, Asian, and Jewish stores. I haven't seen too much of those outside of their own neighborhoods. |

But what I find interesting is many Black foks will take all KINDS of bvllshyt mistreatment from non-Black merchants that they don't even want to HEAR about from Black ones.

Well, you know I'm not a cheerleader for racist comments and behavior and I'm certianly not going to defend Walmart. But I have to agree with Mr. Young. I have personally seen the bad treatment, poor quality of foods and items in these Arab owned stores. The over pricing of sub standard goods could never be sold nor tolerated in white or Jewish communities -not for one second! But black people have allowed these purveyors of substandard goods to invade and colonize their communities. The commerce and merchants in white communities are controlled by whites. Asian, Latino or Jewish communities are the same. YOU DO NOT SEE KOREANS AND ARABS DOTTING OTHER COMMUNITES WITH THEIR STORES. Yet it is the opposite in black communities. Why? Because we allow it.
For some strange reason blacks (as a collective group) have not developed an entrepreneurial self sustaining culture that other groups have. We have allowed these groups (Arabs and Koreans) to invade our communities. And don’t blame them for filling a vacuum that we refuse to fill. We don’t open and create businesses and mom-pop stores like other groups. That is why they are there. They know black communities are like a birds nest on the ground. Rip for the pickings. The Arabs and Koreans know they cannot anchor themselves in white, Latino, Asian, Jewish, Irish, Polish or any other ethnic communities. Why? THEY WON’T ALLOW IT –BUT WE DO! They sell inferior foods and over priced goods and disrespect us in our own communities. Why? BECAUSE WE ALLOW THEM TO DO SO!
Has it ever crossed your mind why there are so many liquor stores in black urban communities? Do it ever occur to you there is basically one (well…actually two) major groups that high powered malt liquors are made and targeted to? Did you ever question the ugly reality of why there are so many liquor stores, check cashing stops and pawn shops in black communities? Why do you not find these parasitic entities dominating other communities? WHY IS ALWAYS BLACK? Simple answer: Black people allow it. They have a choice. They patronize these liquor stores and never demand the same standards of respect and quality of goods that others do. You refuse to create commerce and develop your communities with all black businesses. So, others come in and do it for you –because you are to apathetic or indifferent to do it yourselves.
And don’t go to your life line that bails you out every time –the race card. Finger pointing, projection, excuse making, ranting, tap dancing around the hard issues and the favorite –name calling and feigning the helpless vicitm, will not suffice. You have a choice of patronizing those liquor stores and buying sub-standard goods from these people. I refuse to buy anything from them. That is my choice. If more black people made similar choices, perhaps they would receive the quality of goods and the respect others receive. Dont' expect the Arabs to do it. They are only concerned about themselves -not black people!

I don't know how old you are. But I've been around long enuff to recall their being nearly every type of Black business that was necessarily. There were myriad Black-owned grocers, restaurants, bait & tackle vendors, repair shops, tailors, dry cleaners, etc.
But the disintegration of the nuclear Black family combined with our desire to integrate into the majority communities and the massive consolidation of core business industries/sectors have devastated our capacity and will to create and support Black-own businesses. |
