For the answer to this question read Marita Golden's book "Don't Play In the Sun". I forgot which sororities it was.
Alice Walker's book "In Search of Our Mother's Gardens" had an essay about the 1960's sororities at Spelman that would not allow "dark skinned" women in their dorms or sororities. I was so shocked when I read Alice's experiences, I never forgot that one chapter. Wish I could recall the sorority.

I know it's a lily white literary magazine, but they excerted your autobiography. The "Bin Laden" chapters. According to my friend, they didn't say anything bad about you.

what the hell is an "authentic black woman"? who is the judge of who is "authentic" or not? rayven simone is no less authentic than india (ugly) arie.
who the hell cares about such a superficial non-issue as the one raised by grind? only jealous insane people with clear issues of insecurity are worried about this "light skin, dark skin" garbage. some people need to grow up. |

You probably would know them by a different name than "authentic". The authentic ones are probably the bitter/jealous/insecure ones who are just upset that they don't get any attention. |

I don't know Grind but you made me wanna do the research. Of course Pretty's right; Marita Golden did spell it out in her book "Don't Play In the Sun; but I'm not trying to break another nail pulling a book from any of my crammed tight, overstuffed, in-serious-need-of-a-purge book shelves and I can't seem to find the answer on the net (for free). Were you able to come up with anything yet? |
