PAUL PORTER: The Viacom FLAVA of Media August 10, 2006 Not since the late 60s has one company depicted black America in such a negative light. In the 60s WLBT-TV in Jackson, Mississippi consistently showed the civil rights struggle with the eyes of the KKK management. The unbalanced stories and themes were challenged by the then active NAACP. After years of litigation the FCC revoked the license of WLBT. Almost forty years later, media injustice has not changed much. The shucking and jiving is now mixed with a constant theme of misogyny and violence. From Amos and Andy to the VH1's Flava of Love, Hollywood has gone corporate with mind boggling power. American free enterprise has turned to capitalism with an almost communistic approach to media; selective images that can lead a nation to war and reinforce negative stereotypes. Enter Viacom the media giant that has changed the way the world looks at black America. From MTV, VH1, BET, PARAMOUNT PICTURES, CBS TELEVISION and CBS RADIO, Viacom has literally been defecating on black America ... highlighting every low in black culture and systematically profiting while gathering in huge market shares nationwide. One recent episode of VH1's The Flava of Love is the model of one of America's largest broadcasters: Add MTV Films' "It's Hard Out There For A Pimp," BET's 2 new tasteless reality series featuring Lil Kim, DMX and Keysia Cole all feature themes of crime, sex and drugs. MTV2's defecating animated series "Where My Dogs At" geared for the teens and tweens. And dont forget the constant deluge of tasteless videos that repeatedly show what is wrong with Hip hop culture. Viacom has turned black exploitation into a multi-billion dollar monopoly. Viacom will defend their product just like a crack dealer defends the corner. Crack sells, so stockholders please take note of Viacom's insensitive programming. It is time for a boycott of Viacom. It is time to stand up.
