Hello my sisters and brothers:
I have lurked Thumpers corner for several months but never registered til now. It bothers me the things that I see happning here. I cannot understand the hate among blacks for themselves and other blacks particularly the light vs dark skin issue. What is the reason we cannot get along and accept each other for who we are? Many posters here say that the topic of colorism is so tiresome, yet the lightskin/darkskin debate is the most active topic by far on this forum. It gets the most replies more than any other subject we discuss here--and the same ppl who are so sick and tired of it, remain faithful posters to each thread concerning it. |

Hi Melina.
Welcome to the board.
I am light skinned and I just want you to realize that each time you say this issue is "shallow", it just confirms for darker blacks that we don't share the same experiences and that we are two different groups.
If you are truly black, then you should be able to identify with this issue.
It's pretty much like you're saying, "I don't feel your pain, thus your pain isn't real or important."

For instance digging ourselves out of our mass poverty, raising our children, strengthening our families, improving upon our educational systems, establishing health care for our women, abolishing AIDS, etcetera. Do you feel that you are being productive in your endless arguments over who of us is "better". |

Who said anything about any human life being better than the other?
Many of the problems you just mentioned stem directly from black people's lack of self-worth.
For instance, the majority of blacks suffering from mass poverty as "dark skinned" just as the whole Hurricane Katrina drama showed. The majority of women not chosen for marriage are "dark skinned". Almost all of the "negatives" are repped by dark skinned blacks.
Studies going back over a hundred years show that light skinned blacks are more acceptable in this society, more successful and generally have access to better mates, better jobs and are more trusted by whites.
Colorism is a major problem in the black community and it has been for more than a century.
How people feel about themselves and the opportunities they have or don't have based on the color of their skin certainly is an urgent matter.

Just notice how the Dark blacks on this board are evenly divided against the Light blacks when it comes to these threads about colorism.
The yellows band together on one stance and the darks reiterate the issue on the other side of the coin.
More and more, the TRUTH comes out--that we are not the same people.

Since you don't relate to or take interest in the issue of colorism and discrimination that some black women must deal with on a daily basis, you should at least have the courtesy to stay out of it and discuss topics that apply to you.
Your need to silence real black women about a problem they often have to deal with alone and unsupported because no one else in this country gives a damn, indicates you're just as indifferent as the next redneck. And your need to try to snow these seeking support and acknowledgment into silence about the issue reveals that you are actively in league with those who thrive upon the continuation of oppression and hatred for black women.
