Aw, isn't she just the cutest, in her little matching hat and coat, earrings... ...oh, my mistake, that's a full-grown man. Once again, I have to ask what is up with the trend of men looking like girls? My guess: this is a nuanced, deeply-layered issues which implicates the stereotype of black men as mandigo; a threat to white maleness and the lengths to which we as a people will go through to signal "safety" to whites (signal that our men are not a threat). Thoughts? |

He is a fine ass black man. I love Cameron. He is very handsome and I'm sure he has many fans, but what drives this trend of black men feminizing their appearance? This has nothing to do with their sexuality. I think it has everything to do with appearing less threatening and "safe" in a society in which they are a threat to the powers-that-be. |

Black_Wisdom, Cam'Ron could care less about appearing safe and/or less threatening to society. Cam, aka Killa Cam, purposely made the pink fashion statement as a tribute to his individuality and kahunas to do what men were afraid to do for decades...wear pink. He's known as an outspoken rebel, and this is just one of the many manifestations. Omarion, Bobby Valentino and other R&B youngsters practice "feminization" by wearing lip gloss and gigantic diamond studs to appear....sexy. Not docile. That being said, I disagree with your theory. I think that our young males aren't concerned with appearing less threatening to ANYBODY...including our own elders and especially white people. |

I'm sure that on an individual level, all of the persons you have noted would have similar explanations/justifications, and I'm not disputing that. But there is a macro question: why is this trend even considered sexy/rebellious rather than ridiculous and unattractive? What message are we internalizing that directs us to think that men with earrings, pink coats and purses, lip gloss, etc. are attractive? I reiterate my belief that the clownish, feminine appearance is an attempt to signal to whites that our men are not as threatening. |

Black_wisdom, I've seen white men (rock stars like David Bowie, KISS, Alice Cooper, Twisted Sister, Van Halen, countless LONG-flaxen haired rock bands) do this for years. It totally turns me off---but a lot of women are very attracted to "feminized" men. I haven't a clue why that is---but if every porno features two women having sex (and men love watching two girls do it)--then perhaps "some" women have similar turn ons? Look at the countless movies ("Mrs. Doubtfire", "Some Like It Hot", "Tootsie") that feature WHITE MEN dressed in drag. There's 2 different popular Soap Opera characters---both white males---who wear eye-liner, earrings and pink shirts. Teenaged girls go crazy for these men. There is also a rising "GAY CULTURE" in this country and even though they're straight----"artists" are known for copying whatever is "HIP" or "controverial" in their environment. Madonna cavorting with other women made other female stars like Janet Jackson begin "teasing" that they too might be "bisexual"----just for publicity. Also---WHY would people want to be PUNK ROCKERS? with green and purple mohawks, rings in their noses and ears etc.?

I agree that the pink coats and lipgloss is ridiculous. I don't find any of that sexy at all. But I'm not in that age demographic, either. So it's not going to appeal to me. The lipgloss is to make the lips appear "juicy", as young women "supposedly" find that sexy. And the young men are the ones sporting the trends. All of it is a reflection of Generation Y, or the Millenials. And it's a reminder of how things change generation to generation. I'm not saying that it's right, but I don't think it's as deep as what you're alluding to...not with this generation.

Kola, No offense. But why don't he just wear a teeshirt that says "I love to take it up the a$$ ruff and ragged like." Mofos feel for all this male sensitivity bvllshyt starting a couple decades ago and now we see the consequences of it. Chicks can do the fake(or real) dyke stuff. 'Cause, hell, if you like it most men'll love it. But really, what sane woman wants to see her man with some other nikka's dyck in his mouth? |

I'd expect any man my age on up to react like that, Abm. Men just didn't wear pink...period. And for the record, Cam'Ron is an arrogant diva and his antics have made many people question his sexual orientation. Plus the fact that he started the pink revolution. |

Lots of great comments on this thread. Kola: I've seen white men (rock stars like David Bowie, KISS, Alice Cooper, Twisted Sister, Van Halen, countless LONG-flaxen haired rock bands) do this for years. True enough. But do you see the average white man emulating this? Wearing tights, eyeliner and lipstick? I see plenty of young black men with chandelier earrings, girlish fur coats, long straight hair braided into cornrows, etc. Abm: I really would like to meet him somewhere and just beat the hot piss out of him for wearing some shyt like that. Give him an openhanded smack for me too. Va_sis: All of it is a reflection of Generation Y, or the Millenials. And it's a reminder of how things change generation to generation. I'm not saying that it's right, but I don't think it's as deep as what you're alluding to...not with this generation. Food for thought. Schakspir: He's a closet queen, like 90% of the so-called "rapper" motherfuckers out there. This pic speaks for itself....pussy. When I saw this picture, I was like, "he looks like a complete asshole." But again I had to ask, is this our way of signaling that our men are no threat? Va_sis: But why is lesbianism considered so hot and sensual? Question of the century. |

Va_sis: But why is lesbianism considered so hot and sensual? Kola: Because of sexism and the fact that value is attached to men's VIRILITY that is not attached to women's sexuality. Even women like Black_Wisdom are more concerned with Black men's feminization than they are with the more pressing fact that more and more "mate-less" black females are turning to bisexuality....just to know love and affection.

This is a hot topic that my boyfriend and I converse on often. It's not only black men that have been feminized but MOST American men. The "Metrosexual" is all the rage. With "product" in his hair, a fresh manicure, and his man purse he is fierce with a capital "F." I don't know about my Thumper sisters, but I don't want a man that spends more time getting ready in the bathroom than I do. But it's more than just facials and mesh shirts that have turned straight men into dandies. 21st century women have basically absolved men of their responsibilities as men. With the inroads of radical feminism came that notion that women don't need men to raise children, run a household, or even be happy. Men were patriarchal fools who oppressed women by making them stay home and raise children. Women wanted choices...so we got choices and in the interim we took it to an extreme where now we're not only expected to raise children and keep house, but bust a 40 hour work week and bring home the bacon as well. And women, thinking they've made such strides, took the challenge. We want to be "superwomen", we want to think we can do it on our own and now it's catching up with us as my current generation of men have basically become dependent pansies. Going from their mothers home to their wife/girlfriend and expecting her to carry the same burden as his mother carried before her. I say "No More!". We should go back to some form of traditionalism where men were EXPECTED to take care of their families and wives. There was a time, even in the Black community, where a deadbeat father and husband was considered a pariah. Knocking up a girl and not marrying her lead to shotgun in the face and an ultimatum faster than a court case. And honestly, I don't think this a matter a race, it's a matter of lost principles. We pressed to dissolve the gender roles that insured our species survival for thousands of years and then wonder why our infrastructure is falling apart. |

It is a matter of race. And class. The only women who stayed on the home front while their men were out making the bacon were middle and upper class White women. (And that is only if you do not count the volunteer work of some wealthy women.) Poor White women worked out of necessity, White rural women worked on farms or selling produce from the farms. And Black women--well all of you are well aware of our history of work since our arrival in this country. |

And note that I said "radical feminism", I think feminism made great strides for women. We have a choice to enter our respective careers and follow our goals; HOWEVER, many women now do not have the choice of staying home and raising children. Many radical feminists regard women who chose to do so as failures and confused. |

YvetteP: I'm not saying all women should stay at home, I'm saying that many men expect women to work the same back breaking hours that they do as well as raise children and keep house. How many times have you heard of a woman saying how hubby comes home from work and then goes out with the boys automatically. Sure she worked all day too, but there is a cultural expectation (in America)that she work and do everything else as well.
