Did anyone notice this?
The little girl is Vanessa, the daughter of the nephew of Mama and Mzee. The general consensus is that I was the first mzungu (white person) she had ever seen, and was therefore terrified. Whenever I would come in the room, she would throw her hands over her eyes and scream, "Mimi sitaki mzungu!!" Which basically means, "I don't want the white person!" She likes me now, because I give her candy and soda. Like I said, not above bribery.
It's funny almost. Except than the horrible trauma the child will have. |

I didn't look at that way, Abm, I just thought it was bribery on her part. If she said, "that monkey looking child" "untamed beast of a adolescent" I would have a raised an eyebrow. Now that I think on it, you have me feeling kinda iffy on this.
Side Note (Not really hypersensitive. Just openly aware that that in our subconscious black people are always on guard against clueless white people.)

It's amazing how some here would turn a natural human defense mechanism into a "Black and White issue."
I know of BLACK fathers (soldiers) while off fighting a war or doing military tours came home to their BLACK wives who'd given birth to their BLACK babies and, upon seeing their fathers for the first time, their own BLACK babies were TERRIFIED of them. The same can be said for Whites, Asians, Hispanics, etc.
As humans, we are innately afraid of the UNKNOWN. Again, this is an inborn defense mechanism to protect ourselves from harm. Apparently, the baby had never seen ANY Whites. Therefore, seeing an UNFAMILIAR face caused the infant's instinctive defenses to "kick in". No more, no less.
But since everything HERE is about color...
There are so many real color and race and class and ethnic and religious and political and gender issues to deal with in this country and throughout the world, why create bogus, unnecessary divisions?

Abm just asked whether I thought the woman was refering to the child as an "infant chimpanzee" because of the words she used for which I provided an answer. Have you read the posts? Calm down and relax a bit.
And yes Urban_Scribe, not everything is about race and color. That the last thing I care about is someone's shade. |

Hummmm. Fear is a learned reflex. The only fear an infant instinctively knows is the fear of falling. A baby will reach out to play with a cobra in attack mode or crawl toward a bear cub. And it will not be repulsed by a face that conforms to the configuration that represents the model of universal appeal. Incidentally, this universal model of cuteness also occurs in animal faces. (I can't give you specifics about the veracity of this because I have read so much in my long life, that I forget the sources, but I did read somewhere what I just wrote. |
