FORT WORTH – Former Dallas Cowboys star Deion Sanders urged a woman not to report allegations that Arlington pastor Terry Hornbuckle raped her daughter, the mother testified in court Tuesday.
Loretta Sheppard, 46, told the jury in Mr. Hornbuckle's rape and drug trial that Mr. Sanders said he and pastor T.D. Jakes of The Potter's House in Dallas were working with Mr. Hornbuckle on his problems.
"Hold off on doing anything," Mrs. Sheppard said, quoting the retired cornerback.
She said he also told her that Mr. Hornbuckle, founder of Agape Christian Fellowship, was suicidal and "very sorry for what he did."
Prosecutor Betty Arvin said the testimony helped explain why the 23-year-old accuser and her family didn't immediately go to the police. The accuser – the first of three in this trial – testified last week that she was also worried that no one would believe her accusations against the prominent, politically connected pastor.
Mr. Hornbuckle, 44, is on trial on charges that he sexually assaulted three women, including two church members. He has been in jail since March without the chance for bail after repeatedly violating his terms for release. He also has been indicted but hasn't been tried on charges of sexual assault, possession of methamphetamine, tampering with a witness and retaliation.
Prosecutors have subpoenaed Mr. Sanders and Mr. Jakes to testify at the trial. A hearing is pending to determine whether a pastoral exemption applies.
A court filing by Mr. Jakes' attorneys said that "Bishop Jakes counseled Defendant as a Christian and fellow pastor, and for no other reason." The document said that Mr. Sanders also acted as a "religious functionary" even though he is not an ordained minister.
Defense attorneys have repeatedly questioned why the woman did not immediately report the alleged rape to police. They pointed out that civil attorney G. Lee Finley is representing several women in lawsuits accusing Mr. Hornbuckle of rape as well some former employees who are suing for wrongful termination. |

The black church is one of the main reasons why the black community is such a joke. There are an estimated 85,000 black churches in the U.S. What have they done for the black community? Why is Juanita Bynum showing off her $300,000 car? Why are they slamming homosexuals and condemning them to hell when many of them have engaged in gay/lesbian affairs? |

This reminds me of how when the R. Kelly child rape and porn story broke here in Chicago you had local preachers REVREND Jesse Jackson and REVREND James Meeks (Head of Illinois' largest Christian church) embracing him like he were some "prodigal son".

you are right on the money. You'd be surprised to the lengths that these "prosperity" preachers will go to get members to tithe & donate excessively, instead of paying bills & other financial obligations. |

I agree...Abm...all begins in the home...the church next...the school...and the community...I truly get tired of people blaming everything on the conditions of the country and the system...sure they are bad, but...they have always been bad for US (AfricanAmericans)...my parents...my grandparents...and beyond...they had conditions as bad...worst,i.e.the great depression, segregation, lynchings, jim crow...they still kept their morals, values, and work ethics...respect of their elders was never one of our issues...rape was something Black Men where acused of doing to WW back in the day...so parents get to your jobs...we all had to do ours... |

I hadn't heard about Jakes being a former member of the Gayblade Society (as if such is actually even POSSIBLE). But my wife (who has a gaybar that should be studied by M.I.T.) ALWAYS says about Jakes "I don't care what anyone say. Baby...He GAY!". |

Man, I have to agree.
One time I was at a community meeting and a cop told a minister there that, seeing how there is a church on every corner if they were doing their jobs he wouldn't have anything to do
BUT
The Black women are going to have to take it on the chin for this one. They have taken over the church. Go by any church in the ghetto--almost all women.
Why not? It's mostly a pimp set up and social club with a well dressed preacher driving a big car and nothing but a lot of entertainment with singing and the sisters can fall out in their bomb clothes

If the minister was trying to do right and not flash they would throw him out on his ass for a PIMP DADDY! Why do churches excuse so many unmarried black women for having 5 kids at 19? And if you point this out, they say "only God can judge" and she has been "forgiven for her sins"...only for her to be pop out another kid |

It is a shame.
