The British have foiled (another) bomb plot! By the way, what is the status of the others? Jose Padilla, against whom all charges have been dropped. Richard Reid. That Brazilian the British cops shot on the train. Those poor guys they snatched up in the raid and let go. I'm watching the Cable News channels and marveling at how well put together the stories are on this--and how light they are in details. They sure got people on both sides of the Atlantic scared though. We are at Red threat level. Be afraid. Be very afraid. But don't forget to go to the mall and shop til you drop and burn plenty of gas and buy an SUV. Man, it was just in time. I mean, about 3 am this morning the BBC is full of reports of how British troops are getting waxed in Afghanistan and how their troops are dying in Iraq because they don't have equipment. That will be all of that. Bush can use this news, too what with Kissing Joe going down and people wanting to drop kick his crusade. I suppose the Israelis can use a pause, too. They were supposed to have kicked Hezbollah's ass three weeks ago (I remember 1967, when they beat the combined armies of Egypt, Syria and Jordan with hundreds of tanks and aircraft and hundreds of thousands of troops. Not a very good illustration of the effectiveness of US weapons--which the Middle East is mostly a showcase for) Maybe they can drop a nuke or some poison gas on South Lebanon while everybody is distracted. Mean while: Be Afraid. Be Very Afraid. And don't forget to max out them credit cards. |

Actually, it looked to me like air travelers weren't acting very cooperative when it came to being afraid. They simply appeared miffed because their flights were delayed. In fact, people seem to have become very fatalistic about this terrorist thing - about the state of the world, in general. They suck it in; they pay higher gas prices and shake their heads about the war in Iraq, then bemoan the record of their favorite sports team or make an appointment to get their nails done. And so it goes. |

I don't usually buy into conspiracy theories but, like chrishayden, the more I listen and observe the more it does seem like this whole averted act of terrorism was choreographed. It seems this group had been under observation for months and there were undercover people working with the suspects. The whole operation sounds like something out of a James Bond movie. Boy! What would we have done if the terrorists and their bottles of fake Gatorade and rigged disposable cameras hadn't been discovered just in the nick of time! Where would we be without our fearless leaders. Once again the "good guys" have triumphed. |

Cynique, I agree. The only thing that really disappoints me about this trumped up story England is at the center of this. I mean, I've come to expect these scare tactics from the Bush Administration. But I guess I (foolishly) expected better of the British. |

And the thing that really bugs me is they all get to brag about how they've heroically foiled the plot of some Arab evildoers WHILE cloaking any/all details of what allegedly happened behind the ever-convenient shroud of concerns about national security. |

Anyone see "V for Vendetta"? This has some eerie shades of similarity with that scenario... |

Like Cynique said the operation has been going on for months. Why now? Oh yes, they say the terrorists were about to do a dry run. When it all comes out, it was a bunch of dopes sucked in by an agent provacateur. That's on them. |
