Savant and Fortified still don't get it.
Fortified's list excluded those women who are as you say "truly black", thereby echoing what seems to be a constant practice in media, t.v., magazines, videos.
Fortified asked the question, who is biracial and who is black, but she left out any really black sisters so that her point could be pushed.
I understand your outrage that people like Savant and Fortified keep claiming that we come in all colors and shades, but then these same folk never notice that the darkest are never shown or acknowledged.
To Savant:
Kola didn't claim that any of the women on this thread aren't "black". Many times she has described the African standard for blackness, which is basically that you have to be a brown color, have nappy hair and African features. In other words, Jasmine Guy is not black to Kola, but Sharon Leal is. Toni Morrison's African features and hair make her blacker than Leal to Kola's African eye.
Biracial women, including Kola, are not "authentic" black women by Kola's standard.
You say we're all black, but I do agree with Kola that some of us are blacker than others.
In my case, I am very lightskinned and I don't mind acknowledging that Alek Wek is genetically more authentic than I am, because it's true.
I also understand Kola's insisting that if we don't create a system that honors "blackness", then we will all end up mixed and watered down to the point of being a bunch of lightskinned folk with no color. Malcolm X made the same point, and I see why Kola as an African would set such standards for her children, so that they remain black.

I purposely took those pics of medium-toned women to prove a point, that regardless of their parentage, they are sociopolitically black people (though I know for a fact that #1, 3, 7, 8 and 9 are bi-racial women that consider themselves black; the others I'm not sure about).
Our system that should honor blackness is a system that should face reality: most of us are products of miscegenation, temporary mixing, but that should not hinder the self-awareness, self-determination, maturity, strength and unity we need to demonstrate in order to better ourselves as a people. |

I understand what the majority are saying here but to look at the shade of a black person's skin and judge them "not authentic black", is a shallow assesment. I thought if it was a complete sentence then the punctuation goes before the end quotation, and if it's a just a word or quick phrase like "crazy girl", then the punctuation goes outside the end quotation. But I could be wrong. Woe is I. |

And there's a thread already up showing how commonplace it is for Arabs to refer to blacks as "monkeys". I am from Sudan and have been telling you this shit for years---now they're telling you on the t.v. news, and you still don't know???

Kola I can't compare the modern relationships between blacks and Arabs to the current relationship between blacks and whites. The Arabs simply have no shame. The end result or black death may be no different but Arab methods are outrageous. Whites, at least, try to cover up their racist behavior. I have met a Mauritanian who explained the situation there. This is amazing.

Because my father had so strongly instilled "his vision" into me, and because of my Auntie Ramah---I don't think my grandmother could have completely turned me against "blacks"---but I do think she would have DESTROYED me.
I would be a self-hating black waif constantly doing evil deeds against blacks as to gain acceptance and approval from my Arab family---though in secret, a side of me would be cancerous from guilt and shame.
That much I can tell.
And yes...I have said in MANY INTERVIEWS that I would take the White "master" over the Arab one any day.
At least the whites can be manipulated and seduced. But the Arab is a kind of mulatto to my eye---they are bloodthirsty with a deeper hatred.

This is not quite true. Europeans, generally, are far worse than Arabs, especially Spaniards, Russians and East Germans. Libya, Egypt and Mauritania are three general exceptions. |

Racial Motive for Attack on Ethiopian-born German Unclear

A brutal assault on an Ethiopian-born German citizen has shaken the city of Postdam near Berlin and sparked a debate about xenophobic violence in Germany. But many questions surrounding the attack remain and the two suspects taken into custody don't have formal links to right-wing extremists.
Two days after the attack, Viviane Borchert and a group of friends organized a protest vigil not far from the Charlottenhof train station in Potsdam, just outside Berlin, the place where Ethiopian-born German Ermyas M., 37, almost lost his life on the night before Easter Sunday. Borchert, a 21-year-old trainee, and her friends had been standing at the spot for hours, offering passersby candles and praying for the victim, who was fighting for his life at Potsdam's Ernst von Bergmann Hospital.
Then, on that Tuesday evening at about 9:30 p.m., a group of young men appeared on the scene and surrounded the improvised prayer vigil. As they stood there firmly, one of the men asked a question clearly intended as a provocation: "Why don't you do this when a Turk stabs a German?" They looked like "completely normal" adolescents, wearing jeans and baggy trousers, baseball caps and gel in their hair, says Borchert. "They weren't the kinds of guys I would've expected to ask that kind of question."
But ever since 3:58 a.m. on April 16, nothing seems normal anymore in a city that, until now, has been considered a model eastern German community. Some reactions to the attack seemed downright irrational, whether the speed and certainty with which many observers and politicians blamed right-wing extremists to attempts to downplay the incident by stating that walking around alone at night in certain neighborhoods isn't exactly a good idea.
Part of the furor over the incident stems from the fact that the late-night drama, in which the dark-skinned victim, after being called a "nigger" by his assailants, ended up motionless and covered with blood, didn't happen in just any old neighborhood. This time the horrifying headlines weren't coming from some depressed provincial town in the formerly communist east, but from a city that, until now, preferred to identify itself with the name of its most famous landmark, Sanssouci Palace build by Prussia's kings, as well as with its hometown celebrities such as fashion designer Wolfgang Joop or the likes of Hollywood star Tom Cruise, who chose to stay here while filming in Berlin.
Coming only a few weeks before Germany hosts the World Cup soccer tournament, the incident was a shock to more than just the residents of Potsdam. Attracting attention both nationwide and abroad, it seemed to make a complete mockery of the World Cup slogan "A Time to Make Friends." German Chancellor Angela Merkel said she was "shaken by this despicable crime." Germany's top federal prosecutor, Kay Nehm, immediately launched an investigation saying that the crime could "jeopardize internal security." That promptly angered politicians from the eastern state of Brandenburg, who felt local authorities were completely able to handle the case on their own.
For many it was a clear-cut case from the start. After all, good and evil seemed so unmistakably staked out. The victim, a father of two, has been living in German for about 20, is active in his church, popular with coworkers, a soccer player, a doctoral candidate and socially active. The attackers, on the other hand, could be nothing but neo-Nazi skinheads. And the two suspects, arrested on Thursday and flown to Karlsruhe to appear before a custodial judge on Friday, seemingly fit the bill of xenophobic extremists.
But despite the hasty arrests, some questions remained unanswered. The two suspects have no known, direct ties to the right-wing extremist movement, and the events on the night of the attack have not yet been fully reconstructed. Sources familiar with the investigation also believe that instead of taking investigators into the oppressive neo-Nazi environment, the trail could lead them to criminal biker gangs, where racism is also widespread.
Investigators made their first arrests at about 4 p.m. last Thursday, near Germany's A-115 Autobahn. Heavily armed police officers wearing black riot helmets pulled 29-year-old Björn L., nicknamed "Pieps" because of his high voice, from his car. They believed he was one of the men Ermyas M., who is 1.97 meters tall (about 6'5"), encountered on the night of the attack. Björn L. was also allegedly the one who said the word "nigger," triggering a dispute that ended with Ermyas lying battered on the ground.
When questioned Björn L. promptly denied any involvement in the attack. Since then, his mother has apparently confirmed his alibi, claiming that on the night of the attack, she saw her son in bed, sleeping, at about 12:30 a.m., and woke him the next morning. Her son, she said, had had laryngitis for weeks after a bout with angina, and he could barely speak.

AT THE END OF A SUMMER OF HATE
’You ought to show more courage’

Make no mistake, the German government’s call for an "alliance against the extreme right" coincides with a shortage of manpower for high technology jobs. With its ageing population, the Federal Republic needs "useful immigrants". The German leadership’s sudden pragmatic awakening is nevertheless an encouragement to all who for years have been fighting the rise of the country’s neo-Nazis. At the same time as the skinheads have been taking over the streets of Eastern Germany, anti-racist groups have been formed, a counter-current on which the authorities now feel they can rely - like in Eberswalde, a small town in Brandenburg, 50 km from Berlin.
At midnight on 24 November 1990 a gang of about 30 skinheads armed with knives and baseball bats made its way to the Hüttengasthof, the only bar in the town to welcome foreigners. Out for some "nigger bashing", they fell upon Amadeu Antonio from Angola and beat him up. A short distance away at the chemical plant’s security post, three policemen looked on but did nothing. It was three hours before an ambulance arrived. Too late to save Antonio, who became the first foreign worker to be murdered in the former German Democratic Republic (GDR) since reunification. His killers got between two and four years in prison.
"It should never have happened" says Uta Leichsenring in outrage. She is a small, blond, energetic woman of about 50 who was appointed chief of police in Eberswalde one year after the crime. There are only eight women in such posts in Germany. She is also responsible for the districts of Barnim and Uckermarck, a total population of 322,000, and has a thousand people at her disposal. An IT specialist by training, she entered politics via the citizens’ movement. She now tries to apply the principles of "grassroots democracy" in her work with the police, who are used to authoritarian structures, and relies more on persuasion than giving orders.
Her face to face discussions with the men who failed to rescue Amadeu Antonio - two of them are still in the force - must have been particularly highly charged. "At the time they didn’t even have a mobile phone. And above all, they were scared," Leichsenring explains. Her leniency is surprising when we realise that in 1994 she not only sacked eight police officers accused of torturing Vietnamese cigarette sellers, but did her utmost to get them sentenced despite government and trade union pressure. Likewise last year, after an Asian man had been knocked off his bicycle and an African woman had suffered regular insults on the bus, she wrote an open letter to her town’s 46,000 people asking "Why didn’t you intervene? You ought to show more civil courage."
Police chief Leichsenring is not soft on her fellow citizens. She knows that xenophobia is deeply rooted in society and that the silent majority has long tolerated, even applauded, criminal acts (1). She does not see unemployment alone as an adequate explanation. True, 20% of Eberswalde’s inhabitants are out of a job. The old chemical complex has been pulled down. The crane factory has cut its workforce from 3,000 to 160. And the old brewery is in ruins. But nothing justifies violence, she believes.
That is why she launched "pacts against the extreme right", a "network for tolerance" and patrols by young police officers in areas frequented by neo-Nazis like the Leibniz district, one of the town’s drab social housing estates. The other is controlled by punks. And the two communities are at war with each other, as the graffiti-covered walls bear witness. "Kill the vermin" - directed at leftwing anarchists - is matched by "Nazis out!" But, unlike the leftists who meet at the Exil club, the skinheads have nowhere to go. "They take refuge in the back rooms of certain pubs because they no longer dare show themselves," says Leichsenring. She sees this as a result of her campaign: "they know we’ve got our eye on them."
"Nationally liberated areas"
In Eberswalde, at least shaved heads, boots and black jackets are not so obvious as on the streets of Schwedt, Wurzen or Frankfurt-an-der-Oder. Nor is it anything like Delitzsch in Saxony, which gave a skinhead club a $45,000 subsidy and took on a well-known neo-Nazi as a "social worker". In vogue until recent government statements, the idea of "integrating" the youth of the extreme right was often a massive waste of money. Worse than that, it helped strengthen the "nationally liberated areas" - those youth clubs, supermarkets, railway stations and other public places "conquered" by young neo-Nazis, where any foreigner, punk or antifascist was declared undesirable and physically threatened.
The term "nationally liberated areas" appeared for the first time in 1991 in a document from National Democratic Party (NPD) headquarters setting out the party’s strategy in the new Länder: "We must create areas where we are in control and where we can be like fish in water." In Frankfurt-an-der-Oder, the neo-Nazi singer Jörg Hähnel took up the refrain. With his guitar and his group, he did the rounds of retirement homes, singing "typically German" songs to the applause of the elderly residents. He now represents the NPD on Frankfurt city council.
Leichsenring is far from winning the battle. Though her "network for tolerance" won her the Theodor Heuss medal (2), with all her commitment, she was unable to stop the skinheads from claiming another victim this summer when Falko Lüdtke, a young punk of 22, was pushed under a taxi during a brawl. Leichsenring then joined in a demonstration along with everyone else revolted by such acts.
Neither was her commitment enough to prevent the arson attack on the Palanca African Cultural Centre in March. One of the arsonists explained that he wanted to drive the foreigners out of town. But Eberswalde only has 1% foreigners, including about 40 Africans from Angola and Mozambique. The musical instruments and costumes that the club’s members wanted to show the Germans disappeared. But the landlord gave them new premises free of charge.
At the University Technical Institute, Professor Norbert Jung, 57, is the linchpin of the "network for tolerance". He is outraged at West German politicians’ and intellectuals’ simplistic attempts to explain the extreme right’s success among the youth from the East. Some point to the GDR’s anti-fascist education. Others, including criminologist Christian Pfeiffer, blame collectivist nursery education. As a product of this education, Pfeiffer finds these theories demeaning. And as an Ossi (a native of the GDR), he considers himself a survivor, most professorships having gone to Wessis (from the West).
A biologist, he sees the roots of the evil in the loss of authority by parents and teachers: "Young people know only too well that the new masters are from the West. They interpret their democracy as permission to do anything they like." Especially since the upheaval in values and the frustrations resulting from reunification make the simplistic ideas of the extreme right all the more attractive. They offer the younger generation nationalistic, authoritarian and hierarchical structures in place of the old regime’s regimentation. Today’s "camaraderie" is a substitute for the former "Free German Youth".
"Young people aren’t dupes," Dr Jung goes on to say. "They can see the discrepancy between the humanism and solidarity they are taught and the unbridled individualism of a society ruled by the lure of money." But immigrants, asylum seekers and the homeless - the main targets of assaults - are at the bottom of the social ladder. Young people are looking for a scapegoat for their frustrations; they have absorbed the prevailing new social Darwinism and think they are entitled to despise and even eliminate these "social parasites". Being German probably underpins their sense of superiority.
Perhaps one day a young man like Gordon Reinholds, one of the NPD’s newest recruits, will contact "Exit", a rehabilitation programme for people wanting to escape the subculture of the extreme right. Eberswalde social worker Kai Jahn certainly hopes so. For now, Reinholds, a nice-looking, blue-eyed boy who is re-growing his blond hair, remains an exemplary activist, committed body and soul to the National Resistance. He works 12 to 14 hours a day, travelling every day from Eberswalde to Köpenick - a district of east Berlin that has been home to NPD headquarters since it moved from Stuttgart last November. He used to be a joiner, first as an apprentice and then with a steady job. He was 11 when the wall came down. At 14 he started reading the Landserhefte, racist magazines glorifying the soldiers of the Wehrmacht.
He was outraged that Chancellor Gerhard Schröder wanted to bring IT specialists in from abroad instead of recruiting Germans. "There are already too many foreigners in Germany. I once went to Frankfurt, in the West. I didn’t feel at home among all those immigrants. If they all went back to their own countries, we’d have no more unemployment." Then, targeting capitalists and speculators who live on the backs of the poor, he says: "Men don’t exist to serve the economy; the economy ought to serve men." Words that might have been taken from Viviane Forrester’s book Economic Horror (3).
At the NPD press conference on 7 September in Berlin, called in protest at the proposal to ban the party, there were placards saying: "Jobs for Germans first", "People’s economy, Yes: globalisation, No" and "Jobs, not profits". A former officer of the ex-communist Party of Democratic Socialism (PDS), Professor Michael Nier, took the floor. In his new role as adviser to the NPD he will provide the theoretical basis for the critique of capitalism - with yesterday’s slogans. "The party’s general secretary Udo Voigt is a former general, and I’m a former communist," he says. "But there’s one thing we agree on: both the social democrats and the Christian democrats have abandoned the man in the street. The NPD is the only party to defend him."
In the NPD, the former communist has met up with ex-terrorist and Red Army Faction theorist Horst Mahler, a lawyer, who has just joined, in protest at the plans to ban the party. Quoting Marx, Lenin and Gramsci, Mahler intones against the dictatorship of money, globalisation and "the cartels of private interest that have taken control of the state and betrayed the people. From now on, there is no more right or left. What counts is the middle ground, and the NPD is the party of the middle ground." Indeed, the two extremes have met.
It is easy to see why Gordon Reinholds feels at home. And why Uta Leichsenring has not yet won her battle.

Skinheads Attack African Student in South Russian City

Three young men have been detained for beating up an African student in the south Russian city Rostov on Don, Interfax reports.
On Saturday night, a Zimbabwe national, student of Rostov State Medicine University, was standing at a bus stop when three men attacked him.
According to the witnesses, the attackers were shouting out that they were skinheads.
The police that arrived on the spot detained the young men, one of them a minor.
The African received light injuries, his life is not endangered.
More than 100 attacks incited by nationalistic hatred have been recorded in Russia since the beginning of the year, 18 of them ending in deaths of the victims, the Moscow-based Sova human rights centre reports.
In most cases, the attacks are committed by so-called skinheads, activists of a nationalistic youth movement.

Russia: African Student Killed In St. Petersburg In Possible Hate Crime

A Senegalese university student was slain in St. Petersburg early this morning in what investigators are considering a possible hate crime. The victim was gunned down as he and a group of fellow African students were leaving a night club. The killing comes as the city -- and Russia as a whole -- is experiencing a wave of racially motivate crimes.
PRAGUE, April 7, 2006 (RFE/RL) -- St. Petersburg city prosecutor Sergei Zaitsev told journalists today that while an official motive has yet to be established, the 28-year-old victim's raceis being considered as a factor in the crime.
"An investigation has begun according to Article 105, Part 2, Paragraph L [of the Russian Criminal Code]; that is, murder out of ethnic and racial hatred," Zaitsev said. "I'd like to point out that the motive has not yet been determined, but considering the fact that the victim was African, we deliberately assigned a higher degree [to the case] in order to give our work the right direction."
Lamzar Samba was a fifth-year student at St. Petersburg's Communications Institute who belonged to African Unity, a human rights organization that represents the interests of the city's African emigre community.
Samba was shot dead around 6 a.m. as he and a group of African students were leaving a club near the city center where they were celebrating their institute's faculty day.
One of the students in the group, Michel Panabian, told RFE/RL's Russian Service today that they were heading toward a metro station when Samba was attacked from behind.
"We were walking down the street and there was a man who was walking behind us. He fired a shot. He hit one of us and the guy died," Panabian said. "After he fired, I turned back and I saw him, but he left immediately. I can only describe the way he was dressed."
AP quoted the city's deputy prosecutor, Andrei Lavrenko, as telling NTV television that a hunting gun decorated with a swastika was found at the crime scene.
Russian television broadcast images of the scene, and NTV reported that the man was shot in the head, according to AP.
Racist violence is a mounting problem in Russia. Members of ultranationalist and other groups regularly harass or attack Africans, Asians, and non-Slavic residents from the Caucasus or former-Soviet Central Asia.
Today, a group calling itself the Party of Freedom welcomed the killing in St. Petersburg, saying on its website that "the cleanup of the city continues."
Desire Defoe, who heads the African Unity organization to which Samba belonged, expressed the helplessness many foreign citizens in the city feel.
"I very much hope that the [Russian] state will know what to do," Defoe said. "We can't tell the [Russian] state what should be done [to protect] foreign citizens, this is ridiculous. What advice can be given today? Even the police told us to walk in groups, not to be alone. Did that help? So, what are we supposed to do, sit at home?"
The French news agency AFP cited an independent study by the nongovernmental organization Sova as stating that six people have been killed and 79 injured in more than 40 racist attacks around the country this year.
According to Sova, 30 of the attacks and five deaths this year have taken place in Moscow. In St. Petersburg, 14 people have been injured and one killed in racially motivated attacks, not including today's killing.
In 2005, 28 people were killed and 366 injured in Russia as a result of hate crimes, according to Sova.
The Russian Foreign Ministry today issued a statement expressing condolences to Samba's relatives and friends following the killing.
However, rights groups argue that the authorities in Russia generally do little to combat such crimes.
"I don't think the authorities are doing enough," Gill said. "The incident is very sad but its also very predictable in the climate today. Clearly there is a problem that goes beyond individual sorts of acts of violence. Of course, the perpetrators are the ones who carry ultimate responsibility, but the government need to look at this problem more systematically. This is a crime about what Russia stands for today."
In addition, Gill says the authorities' tendency to blame such attacks on fascists merely serves to obscure the issue.
"Historically, fascism was associated with World War II and of course the Soviet Union was a very powerful participant in the war, so the language of antifascism I think comes from there," Gill said. "But in today's rhetoric, you know, I'm not sure how meaningful it is any more, when I think they need to look at their own actions today."
Gill notes that some Russian politicians promote the idea that 'Russia is for Russians' only. And such statements, she said, can help fuel a climate in which people of different backgrounds are targeted in Russia.

Russia: For African Students, Affordable Education Still Comes At A Price

November's deadly blaze at a People's Friendship University dormitory left over 40 foreign students dead and focused attention yet again on the plight of Africans and Asians living in a Russia that is more openly racist and xenophobic than in the Soviet years when the university was founded. In 1960, the university -- then named after the Congolese revolutionary and Prime Minister Patrice Lumumba -- was created as a showcase for the best and brightest of Third World students who traveled to Moscow for a subsidized, quality education. The school's fortunes have faded since the Soviet collapse, but it is still a draw for many foreign students with few higher-education alternatives -- despite the many dangers. RFE/RL visits People's Friendship University to talk to African students about their experiences there.
Prague, 2 January 2004 (RFE/RL) -- For a moment, it looks like a dormitory anywhere in the world. Books and papers clutter the desks. Laundry hangs drying from lines crisscrossing the room. Loud music spills from speakers mounted over the door, flooding the hallway with sound.
It's the music of the West African republic of Guinea-Bissau -- the only connection the residents of this Moscow dorm room have with their distant homeland.
Nearly a third of the 12,000 students at People's Friendship University come from developing countries in Africa, Asia, and Latin America.
It is not an easy life. Like many young people studying abroad, Russia's foreign students must contend with homesickness and poverty. Few can afford even an occasional trip home. But the difficulties they face are compounded in a country like Russia, where simmering racism and xenophobia have long been tolerated. The post-Soviet upswing in nationalism -- evident in the rise of white-supremacy groups and the recent parliamentary sweep of parties running on extremist patriotic agendas -- have brought the problem bubbling to the surface, often in the form of violence.
Haoussou Kolbassia, an engineering student from Chad, says even traveling from the dorm to off-campus classrooms can be fraught with danger. "Never go out alone," he says, citing the common wisdom shared among Friendship University's foreign students. "Look around you. Stay alert."
"We just get organized so that there's at least 10 of us when we go to class. We get up in the morning, and then we all leave together," Kolbassia said.
Traveling to class from the university campus in Moscow's southern suburbs means a 10-minute bus ride and a long Metro commute. Kolbassia, who had a run-in with skinheads just days after he first arrived in Moscow in 1999, says he learned the rules of survival quickly.
"I would sleep with everything on me. Even my passport. I had everything, everything with me in my pockets. That's what the older students told us -- 'carry everything with you.' Even to go from one dorm to another, I used to be afraid of even crossing the road. Even a policeman could have attacked me. There have been cases like that, where students have been attacked by the police. In a word, when you know what freedom is, [living in Russia] really feels like going to jail," Kolbassia said.
Human rights groups in Russia have documented numerous instances of racist harassment and abuse, and ambassadors from African nations have appealed to the Russian Foreign Ministry for better protection for their citizens. But Gabriel Kochofa, the head of Moscow's Foreign Students Association, says the authorities have repeatedly failed to respond adequately to such requests. Every month, there are five to 10 attacks on Africans in Moscow. The best advice for students, Kochofa says, is to keep to the relative safety of their dorm rooms as often as possible.
But even there, Kolbassia says, it's impossible to feel completely safe. He recalls the fate of his friend Abdu, who was killed in a hallway of the dormitory.
"He was a student from Guinea, from Conakry, working as a guard at the entrance of this dorm. And one night -- it was probably four or five o'clock in the morning -- a woman, a cleaning lady who works here, arrived [for work] and knocked at the door. She knocked and knocked. It may have taken him a while to open the door. She screamed at him, insulted him. Then she had her sons come over with clubs and a hammer. They beat him. He died," Kolbassia said.
Life in the dormitory still has its prosaic moments. In a kitchen at the end of one dorm-room floor, Paolo, a student from Guinea-Bassau, chats about exams with a friend as he washes dishes. The kitchen, which services about 30 students, comes equipped with a single gas stove and one sink. "This is what our world is reduced to," Paolo shrugs.
It's a far cry from what many had dreamed of when they first set their sights on Moscow. Kolbassia says he studied hard to win his scholarship to People's Friendship University, which includes board and a $15-a-month stipend. For years, he says, his father -- a Chadian official who had traveled regularly to the Soviet Union -- dreamed of his son receiving an education in Moscow, and refused to believe Kolbassia's tales about the racist hostility he was encountering on a nearly daily basis.
All that changed, Kolbassia says, after the fire. In late November, a deadly blaze ripped through a neighboring dormitory, killing at least 42 students, mainly from China, Bangladesh, Vietnam, and several African countries.
Russian media later cited a police source as saying all the doors leading to the fire escapes had been blocked. Kolbassia and Paolo were forced to watch helplessly as students jumped to their death from fifth-story windows. And Gedewon Belihu, a law student from Ethiopia, says the fire officials did little to battle the blaze. It was three hours before the blaze was extinguished.
"The firefighters arrived, without water, without anything. Probably the life of a foreign student is not worth anything to them. So they just stood around, smoking," Belihu said.
The human-rights watchdog Amnesty International reached a similar conclusion in a report, issued last month, expressing concern that "the response of the emergency services to the recent fire may have been hampered by racial prejudice."
Police have officially ruled the cause of the fire as faulty electrical wiring. But many students say they suspect arson. The campus of People's Friendship University is easily accessible to non-students, and just four days after the fire, a group of skinheads attacked six students -- both male and female -- on university grounds.
It's a situation that has forced foreign students to go to certain extremes. Many have taken up martial arts in order to better protect themselves. Others have simply given up and gone home. Gedewon Belihu, for one, says his entire family contributed money so that he could study, and he is determined to stay. Asked if he would have come to Moscow if he had known about the difficulties, Belihu looks surprised, then answers, "Of course. I want to fulfill my dream of getting an education. And Moscow is still the best place for that."
"It's also the only one," Haoussou Kolbassia adds dryly. With visas and scholarships a rarity in Europe for African students, Russia remains the only viable option.

Spain struggles with race riots
Riot police in Spain have again clashed with hundreds of protesters on the third consecutive day of violence directed against immigrants from North Africa.
The local immigrant community has asked the authorities for protection after rioting left their property ransacked and their cars overturned.
Clouds of smoke wafted over the south-eastern Spanish region of Almeria as a plastic recycling factory, set alight by anti-immigrant protestors, burnt to the ground.
There were clashes in and around the Moroccan quarter of El Ejido as riot police tried to clear roads blocked by the demonstrators.
Spanish state radio reported that more than 30 people were injured and seven others arrested as police prevented protesters marching on El Ejido.
Stabbings
The violence erupted on Saturday when a Moroccan man was arrested on suspicion of stabbing to death a Spanish woman in a local market.
The death came two weeks after another Moroccan man was arrested in connection with the stabbing to death of two people.
In response, hundreds of Spaniards marched through the town shouting racist slogans. Police reinforcements were called in after protesters went on the rampage, burning cars and shops belonging to Moroccans.
The Spanish Foreign Minister, Abel Matutes, appealed for calm, saying that Spaniards must get used to the influx of North African immigrants attracted by the fast-growing economy.
He told state radio: "We need to reflect on how we need to change our behaviour in a pluralist society that with each day will ... have more immigrants, that each day will need more immigrants to take our country forward."
The Moroccan ambassador to Madrid, Yamal Eddin Mechbal, called on his countrymen "to behave like civilised people, containing your rage and ire" in response to the attacks, the Spanish news agency Europa Press reported.
El Ejido is the centre for fruit and vegetable production on Spain's southern coast - an industry that relies heavily on cheap immigrant labour.

Fears World Cup Could Be Marred Europe's Rising Racism

MALAGA, Spain — Eugenio Lorente has seen the skinheads in the stands and heard the monkey noises directed at the black players. Living in this city on the south coast of Spain, less than 100 miles from Morocco, he has seen the population change as boatloads of Africans arrive, seeking a share of Europe's bounty.
Lorente has spent decades keeping sporting events safe, first as a police officer and now as director of security for Malaga's professional soccer team, the Malaga Club de Futbol. And like many people in Europe, he is worried about the World Cup.
This month, teams and fans from 32 nations will gather in Germany for what may be the most eagerly anticipated sporting event on the planet, the quadrennial World Cup — the world championship of soccer, or football, as it is known outside America.
Competitors will display speed, passion and agility so dazzling that soccer lovers refer to it as "the beautiful game." But there are concerns this year that the beautiful game may be marred by ugly incidents.
The long-standing intolerance of some soccer fans has newly combustible fuel: Europe's population is changing dramatically. Countries such as Italy and Spain were until recently net exporters of migrants. Now they see waves of Africans and Asians moving in.
Europe has experienced an increase in anti-immigrant feeling that has not only derailed the proposed European constitution but resulted in race-related murders.
And Germany has its own set of ethnic tensions, including an apparent rise in neo-Nazi activity.
There is a history in Europe of extreme right-wing political involvement in organized soccer fan clubs. And recent incidents, notably in Spain, give no cause for comfort: Fans chanting racist taunts or throwing banana peels have reduced black players to tears.
"Everything reflects society," said Ashley Green, a spokesman for Progetto Ultra — the Ultra Project — a group that fights racism in Italy. And that includes soccer.
"People are resistant to change," said Piara Powar, the director of Kick It Out, a British organization that fights racism in soccer.
In March, the Federation Internationale de Football Association, or FIFA, which runs the World Cup, adopted new rules that would punish the teams for the racist actions of fans. Teams could face point deductions or even disqualification. FIFA has not made clear whether these rules will apply during the World Cup.
German officials have said they will do everything possible to prevent racist demonstrations inside and outside the soccer arenas.
Earlier this year, football officials reacted after a series of incidents virtually demanded public debate on the issue. In February, Samuel Eto'o, a Cameroonian striker who plays for Futbol Club Barcelona, was verbally abused in the northern Spanish city of Zaragoza.
Fans of Real Zaragoza made monkey noises every time Eto'o had the ball. Eto'o started to leave the field but his teammates persuaded him to stay.
Real Zaragoza was fined 9,000 euros — $11,500 — but Eto'o said the team's stadium should have been closed for at least a year.
A larger fine, $82,000, was levied in 2004 against the Spanish football federation after fans in Madrid abused several British players with monkey chants. The Daily Telegraph, a British newspaper, reported that "racist abuse dripped from all corners" of the stadium.
And in 2005, Luis Aragones, the coach of Spain's national team, was fined $3,800 after he was captured on camera referring to a French player, Tierry Henry, as "that black s—t."
Aragones said he meant no offense.
"I'm obliged to motivate my players to get the best results," he said. "As part of that job, I use colloquial language, with which we can all understand each other within the framework of the football world."
In Malaga, also in 2005, a referee stopped one game because of monkey chants, declining to resume it until club officials made a public announcement telling fans to desist. After another game, fans monkey-chanted Paolo Wanchope — their own player — as he stretched on the field.
Lorente, the club's director of security, is now responsible for broadcasting anti-racism announcements throughout the game. But, like many people in Spain, he blames news organizations for concentrating too much on racism, which he said gives radicals the attention they crave and encourages copycats.
"We're paying too much attention to something that is a passing fashion," he said.
Powar, the director of Kick It Out, called that attitude "denial."
"Understanding the issue is one of the first steps to moving forward and dealing with the problem," Powar said.
Some responsibility falls on the "ultras" — Europe's highly organized soccer fan clubs that are often influenced by the fringe right. They began in Italy in the late 1960s and were copied elsewhere on the continent.
As immigration continues, resentment and racism will only increase, predicted Fransico Baeza, a shoemaker in Malaga.
"When people decide to live in another country, they need to adapt to that country," he said. "We don't need to adapt to them."
On the fringes of European society, that resentment is turning ugly. In local elections in Britain last month, the anti-immigration British National Party had its best showing ever, more than doubling its number of local council seats, from 20 to 44.
And last month, Belgium saw a spate of apparent racial attacks.
In Antwerp, an 18-year-old skinhead with an extreme right background was accused of killing a pregnant black woman and injuring a Turkish woman in what authorities believe was a racially motivated attack.
Earlier, the body of a Moroccan man who had been in a fight with skinheads was found in a river near Antwerp. In Bruges, 50 miles to the west, two men, one of African descent, were badly beaten after walking by a bar popular with skinheads.
Germany has its own set of ethnic challenges. It has a large population of immigrants from former Communist countries in Eastern Europe — countries that, as Powar put it, had "very mono-cultural societies." In Germany, those people are mixing with a huge population of Turks, many of whom have lived in the country for decades.
In April, an Ethiopian-born German was beaten into a coma in the eastern city of Potsdam, reportedly after his assailants shouted racial slurs. In May, two men from Mozambique and a Cuban man were beaten in the eastern city of Weimar by a group of what police said were right-wing extremists.
Later in the month, a Turkish-born state lawmaker, Giyasettin Sayan, was hit on the head with a bottle later in May in Berlin.
The incidents against have prompted ethnic groups to post on the Web lists of areas in east Berlin and elsewhere that dark-skinned people should avoid if they value their safety.
But the government has promised to keep people safe.
"It is unacceptable that extremists, neo-Nazis and others use this World Cup for their horrible ideas," said Christian Sachs, a spokesman for Germany's Interior Ministry. "The government will exercise all its powers to prevent it, and it is also a task for every individual to stand up against intolerance."
Nonetheless, the climate in Germany has some experts worried.
"It's a high-risk country in which to hold this event," Lorente said.

"It was because of my colour. They don't like us. They didn't like my skin."
Yunus Sultonov, a market trader from Tajikistan, was explaining why a gang had killed Khursheda, his nine year old daughter.
Yunus had taken Khursheda skating. They were on their way home when the attackers struck.
We were talking in a cold, damp storeroom where Yunus rests when he is not looking after his stall.
His wife Maljuda was there too, but she did not say anything. She just looked at a picture of her daughter, then wept.
'A lost generation'
The streets of St Petersburg are dangerous for outsiders.
After dark, bands of skinheads will attack anyone who is not white.
They are so proud of their murderous acts that they have even filmed some of them.
The skinheads are a lost generation whose childhood disappeared in the chaos of Russia in the 1990s.
Now in their teens and early twenties, they have embraced a twisted creed of hatred and violence.
Yuri Belyaev is one of its authors. He describes himself as a racist. He claims widespread public support for his views.
"Russians are fed up with being humiliated in their own country. Negroes have more rights here and immigrants own all the property," he told me.
He makes light of the current wave of attacks saying, "The resistance you see for now is of the most innocent kind."
Unsafe streets
Alexander Sungurov has been active in liberal politics in St Petersburg since the last days of the Soviet Union.
With the certainties of communism and cold war gone, he says, the racists' simple message appeals to youth without prospects or purpose.
"They try to have their identity through killing - looking for some enemy. Who is the enemy? Not Americans, but people with other colour of skin."
Sall Samba Lampsar, a student from Senegal, was shot dead on his way home from a nightclub.
Africans and others are scared. They feel that not enough is being done to protect them.
Earlier this month, they demonstrated to demand better protection from the police.
We asked the St Petersburg authorities for an interview, but no-one would talk to us.
Their critics say that they have no clear plan to deal with the violence - and this in a city which is a magnet for business people, students and tourists from abroad.
Ali Nassor came here from Zanzibar 20 years ago.
He has lived in the city through all the upheavals and uncertainty of the last two decades. He says life for outsiders has never been as bad.
"We are just being killed openly," he told me. "I mean, it's just no more under control."
Yunus Sultonov echoes that feeling of defencelessness. The jury at the trial of his daughter's killers found them guilty of "hooliganism", not murder. As a result, they received lighter sentences.
"They weren't sorry for the girl they killed, they were sorry for them," he says of the verdict which was reached last month.
"They were 15 or 16 years old so they were sorry for them. They weren't sorry for my daughter."
In July, St Petersburg - the home town of President Vladimir Putin - will host the G8 summit of the world's richest and most powerful countries. They are already smartening up the city's streets and buildings.
For the visit of presidents and prime ministers, St Petersburg will shine.
The stain that racist murders have left on its reputation will be harder to remove.

Neo-Nazis held for Oslo 'racist' murder

Five neo-Nazis have been arrested after a black teenager was stabbed to death in Norway.
The attack is being described as Norway's first racially-motivated murder.
The prime minister has issued a statement condemning the attack and delivering a warning that racism and intolerance pose a threat to Norwegian society.
The dead teenager, 15-year-old Benjamin Hermansen, was killed on Friday in a suburb of Oslo, where he was well-known as a campaigner against racism.
Last summer he appeared on a television programme to discuss an earlier attack against him by neo-Nazis.
Police say the five neo-Nazis detained after the attack were all members of a group known as the Boot Boys.
The five - three men in their 20s and two teenaged women - were detained in an Oslo flat filled with Nazi memorabilia, said a spokesman.
Officers who went to the flat found books by leading Nazi Rudolf Hess, and posters for "white power" music.
Police have described their shock at dealing with a racially-motived murder in Norway.
"I have served in Lebanon and Yugoslavia. There people were killed because of their race. I never thought this could happen in Norway," Inspector Finn Abrahamsen was quoted as saying by the daily Dagbladet.
Benjamin had been swapping mobile phone covers with a friend in the multi-racial suburb of Holmlia when the attack happened.
His friend, who was white, was not injured.
Hundreds of people attended a rally on Sunday at the scene of the attack, some of them teenagers who wept openly.
Boot Boys march
"Benjamin cared about fairness. I think he's in paradise now," said one of his friends, Victor Lopez, in an address shown on national news.
The statement from Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg condemned the murder, and delivered a warning against the threat that racism and intolerance represent to Norwegian society.
The Boot Boys, believed to have around 200 members, wanted last August to stage a march through Oslo to mark the anniversary of Hess's death.
Permission was repeatedly denied, but the neo-Nazi group's plans sparked a rival anti-racist march through the city, attended by 15,000 people, and the Boot Boys were forced to take their own demonstration outside the city.

Racist Murder Shocks Brussels Africans
Last Saturday five Moroccan “youths” cut the throat of a 16-year old black boy in the Brussels borough of Molenbeek. The victim, who was born in Niger, bled to death. The Molenbeek blacks say it was a racist murder. They complain about the hatred of the Moroccans for the black Africans. They also complain about the indifference of the Belgian authorities.
Three days after the murder the large pool of clotted blood was still visible on the spot in the Heyvaert Straat where the boy had been killed. The authorities did not bother to clean it up. Yesterday Abdelhai and Sedeat, two brothers of the assassinated boy, showed the large black spot with its foamy white edges to a journalist of Het Nieuwsblad. “The blood has been here for more than two days,” Abdelhai said. “Everyone could walk right through it.”
Molenbeek, a western borough of Brussels, is Brussels’ most dangerous no-go area. It is the fiefdom of Philippe Moureaux, the leader and kingmaker of the Parti Socialiste (PS), the largest party in Brussels. Moureaux, the mayor of Molenbeek, has sold his borough out to street gangs, prohibiting the police from going in to maintain law and order. The Socialist strongman hopes that the Muslim vote will help the PS achieve an election victory in next Autumn’s local elections. A growing number of moderate Muslims, however, is turning against the mayor. After Saturday’s murder some have gone so far as to openly announce their sympathy for the right-wing Vlaams Belang (VB), a party which the PS regards as “racist.”
In today’s De Morgen, a left-liberal Brussels newspaper, immigrant inhabitants of Molenbeek complained about Arab racism towards blacks, about the decay of the neighbourhood and, above all, about the absence of the police. Kamal, a Belgian of Moroccan origin who runs a local café, said: “I put a petition to Moureaux once. We have nothing but problems here: fighting all night. In spite of thousands of signatures the mayor did not even react. The police officers are improbably slack. When I phone them they do not even bother to come.”
The immigrants live in a neighbourhood where the pavements have been broken up so the boulders and paving stones can be used for throwing, where the windows of the houses have been smashed, where car wrecks are parked along the curb and the streets are littered with stinking garbage. De Morgen described ‘Moureaux-ville’ today as “a part of Africa in Brussels.” The mayor is losing his sway over his underpriviliged subjects. Souleymane, a black immigrant from Guinea, told the paper that he agrees with the Vlaams Belang that law and order must be restored. “This neighbourhood is rotten,” he says.
The boy from Niger was murdered when Moroccan youths tried to sell him a cell phone they had stolen. They demanded 30 euros, the boy wanted to pay only 10 euros. The Moroccans took this as an insult and slit his throat. An 11-year old Arab boy told De Morgen that the black boy had only himself to blame: “He should not have behaved so arrogantly.” The Molenbeek blacks have vowed that they will kill a Moroccan boy in retaliation. “An eye for an eye” is the only law that applies here.
Kamal, the Belgian of Moroccan origin, supports the VB too. “I opened my café in 1998. In the early days I had both Moroccan and African customers. But the hatred between the two groups was too great. The racism of the Moroccans was excessive. I had to deny them entry.” Kamal agrees with the VB that illegal immigrants must be repatriated. “The country is full,” he says firmly.
While Kamal demands that illegal immigrants be repatriated, the Catholic bishop of Antwerp, Paul Van den Berghe, today sent a letter to all 127 Catholic primary and high schools in his diocese, allowing them to let their pupils (between 6 and 18 years of age) participate in a protest demonstration which will be held on 15 February in favour of illegal immigrants. The authorities recently arrested a number of illegal immigrants and intends to send them back to the countries they came from. Leftist activists want to prevent this. They have the support of Monsignor Van den Berghe. The latter is an elderly fool who likes protest demonstrations. In the late 1980s the Antwerp Catholics could see their bishop march in support of the Nicaraguan Sandinistas.
The bishop’s letter was sent on the very day that the results were published of a survey which showed that in Flanders, Belgium’s Dutch-speaking and traditionally Catholic northern half, only 3,7 percent of the population still goes to church on Sundays. This is one of the lowest rates in Europe. Belgium has ceased to be a religious country in spite of the fact that over 70 percent of all children attend (government subsidized) Catholic schools that are run by the bishops.

Moroccan actor assaulted in act of racism
Police in northern Poland said a Moroccan actor was brutally attacked during a festival that was meant to sensitise young Poles to the dangers of racism. (Morocco Times)
Polish national radio, Polskie Radio, said that eyewitness reports suggest the attack was an act of racism.
The Moroccan actor, identified by the police as Abdel M., was cruelly stabbed several times by four men. He lost consciousness while being rushed to a hospital in northern Poland.
Police reports said the four men are held in custody.
The victim has been living in a Warsaw suburb for several years and has Moroccan and Polish citizenship, AFP reported.
Abdel was a member of the Migrator troupe of refugee actors who took part last week in an international theatre festival in the northern city of Olsztyn, Polskie Radio stated.
The troupe performed a play about how it feels to be a refugee in Poland, and after the show the Moroccan actor was approached by several men and hit over the head with a bottle and stabbed repeatedly, the same source added.
“There were a lot of people and then one of the actors told me that a guy was lying in a pool of blood. I had to rush there, he was lying there and the ambulance was there. He was unconscious and they were trying to revive him.” said Simon Mol, the Cameroonian head of the theatre troupe.
“I spoke to him when he regained consciousness and he told me that they said a specific remark was made before he was attacked. So he asked them: why? ‘Because you are dark, you are black,' they said.”
The festival, which highlights problems of ethnic groups and neighbourly relations even across borders, was suspended after the incident.

Belgium: Racist murderer linked to Flemish nationalists
Some 20,000 people, many wearing white armbands, joined a march against racism in Belgium’s second largest city, Antwerp, last month. The march had been called following two recent attacks in the city that left three people dead and another seriously injured. The murders have highlighted the growth of extreme right-wing tendencies in Belgian politics. One of the murderers has direct links to the far-right Flemish nationalist party Vlaams Belang (Flemish Interest—VB). At the beginning of May, five skinheads beat up a black Frenchman in the city of Bruges. He is still in a coma following the assault. In Antwerp, 23-year-old Moroccan Mohamed Bouazza drowned in the River Scheldt on the night of April 30 following an apparently racist attack at a nightclub. Some 20,000 people, many wearing white armbands, joined a march against racism in Belgium’s second largest city, Antwerp, last month. The march had been called following two recent attacks in the city that left three people dead and another seriously injured.
The murders have highlighted the growth of extreme right-wing tendencies in Belgian politics. One of the murderers has direct links to the far-right Flemish nationalist party Vlaams Belang (Flemish Interest—VB).
At the beginning of May, five skinheads beat up a black Frenchman in the city of Bruges. He is still in a coma following the assault. In Antwerp, 23-year-old Moroccan Mohamed Bouazza drowned in the River Scheldt on the night of April 30 following an apparently racist attack at a nightclub. In Brussels, earlier in the year, a black man was attacked at a petrol station. The beating left him partially blind and paralysed.
The incident that focused public concern took place on May 11 in Antwerp. Facing expulsion from his agricultural and biotechnological college after he was caught smoking, 18-year-old Hans van Themsche shaved his head and bought a Winchester rifle. He warned his fellow students that he would commit suicide and take 10 immigrants (he used the racist term “makakken”) with him, saying that by doing so he “would have...done something good.” Dressing himself in black, he left a note for his school friends and headed for the city centre.
Once there, van Themsche started firing, deliberately targeting immigrants. He shot and wounded Songul Koç, a young Turkish woman wearing a headscarf, as she sat reading on a bench. She is still in intensive care recovering from her injuries. He then opened fire on a two-year-old white child and her Malian nanny. Both Luna Drowart and Oulematou Niangadou were killed. Van Themsche was then stopped by a plainclothes policeman. When he refused to drop his weapon, the officer shot him, wounding him in the stomach. He was charged with murder and attempted murder and is presently in hospital under police guard. In his first statement after his arrest, van Themsche said, “That girl [Luna Drowart] was in the wrong place at the wrong time.”
After his arrest, van Themsche told prosecutors that he “sympathised with the extreme right side” of Belgian politics. Although not a member of VB, he grew up schooled in its racist politics. His father, a local party leader, was a founding member of Vlaams Blok (Flemish Bloc), the party’s precursor. Van Themsche’s Aunt Frieda is currently a VB MP in the Flemish regional government. His grandfather was a member of the Waffen SS on the Eastern Front during the Second World War.
VB, like the Vlaams Blok before it, is a far-right Flemish nationalist party that calls for the separation of the economically dominant Dutch-speaking north of Belgium from the rest of the country. It argues that the 1830 Belgian state was “artificial” and bases its proposed “independent Flemish state” on linguistic identity. It also lays claim to the Belgian capital Brussels, a French-speaking city in the centre of the Dutch-speaking region.
It is the proponent of unbridled free-market capitalism, declaring that the “right of ownership and free enterprise...constitute the foundation for economic development, employment and prosperity.” As such, VB opposes public expenditure, insists that responsibility for social care lies with “families and their social entourage,” and supports sweeping tax cuts.
The main planks of VB’s programme have been opposition to immigration and a repressive law-and-order policy. VB was forced to change its name from Vlaams Blok two years ago in order to avoid legal penalties after judges ruled it was an openly racist party. The Blok had called for an end to new immigration and the repatriation of North Africans. VB calls for repatriation of immigrants who do not “adapt to our values and morality,” reserving voting rights for “Flemish” citizens.
The party took 24 percent of the vote in regional elections two years ago. In Antwerp itself, the Blok took 33 percent of the vote in the 2000 local elections and is hoping to gain control of the city’s council in October’s elections.
VB has attempted to distance itself from van Themsche and sought to downplay his political background.
Chairman Frank Vanhecke told a party congress that “nobody has the right to hold [VB] morally responsible” for the killings. VB’s Philippe van der Sande said that van Themsche was “probably mentally disturbed” and the murders had “no racist motives.”
VB has even sought to exploit the crime to demand greater police powers. Vanhecke, declaring the party was “shocked” by the murders, demanded the “heaviest possible penalty” against van Themsche. The party called on its members to participate in the “white march.”
The victims’ families have expressed their anger at the way in which VB has attempted to use the murders to appear respectable. Calling on VB not to participate in the march, the families said that VB’s voters were implicated in the murders. Demonstrators told the press that they were there to oppose VB. Mohamed Bouazza’s mother told the march that VB and its leader Filip Dewinter were responsible for what had happened.
The “white march,” though, sought to channel popular anger away from drawing any political conclusions about the roots of the racist violence. As at similar marches in Belgium recently, no placards were carried. The march followed two banners, reading “The sadness of Antwerp” and “Stop racism: Diversity is reality.”
The main parliamentary parties are using VB’s politics to justify their own rightward shift. Prime Minister Guy Verhofstadt denounced the murders as the result of a “climate of intolerance,” but both the VLD and the Christian Democrats have adopted similar language to VB’s on immigration.
Since 1989, the main parliamentary parties have agreed to maintain a cordon sanitaire around VB. This is now beginning to change. In 2004, after VB’s electoral success, Verhofstadt called for opening dialogue with the party in order to expose their weakness.
