Yesterday for the first time I watched some episodes of The Wire http://www.hbo.com/thewire/ I hate cop shows but I like this one? Anyone else watch it? There are some who might wonder why I might watch a show involving action that I might see right around the corner. The answer of course is that I don't see this action around the corner--this show involves the crooks, the cops, and the politicians, showing how they all work (or don't work) together. I also think it is as brave as US TV can be for showing why the so called War on Drugs is not working and probably never will. Some good scripts and good acting. |

Yeah, I watch it. It is a very gritty show that depicts the extreme convoluted culture and violence of a drug and gang entrenched black community. It shows the Baltimore drug scene, seen through the eyes of drug dealers, law enforcement and corrupt city officials. Although it can be slow and on the verge of being boring at times, I still watch it. I’ve seen a few very riveting episodes of the show. I’d recommend watching it to anyone who likes hard core reality based shows. I became addicted to the "Shield". I have three of the season boxed DVDs. I loved that show. Although a number of people did not care when Glen Close joined in the last episodes, I personally had no problems with it. I also thought "Homicide: Life On The Streets" was a very good and well written show. This series was the most reality-based police drama that has ever aired on television. It was shot entirely with handheld cameras on location in the Fells Point Community of Baltimore, MD. In fact, I had a friend who lived in Baltimore and she told she used to see them shooting episodes of the show all the time. And you can't turn the TV on without being inundated with "Law and Order". The longest ongoing police series (since 1990).

No, Chris, I've never seen it. But I have heard good things about it. Now that so many programs are coming out on DVD, maybe I'll catch it at my local Blockbuster. |

I have watched it since the very beginning and seen most episodes at least TWICE. If you have any questions about any of the episodes, I could probably fill you in. And I really hope that when the show continues next season that it will be about Avon / Marlo / Prop Joe and the rest. I didn't like it when the show focused on the longshoremen/dock workers. I didn't like those shows at all. Not so much because it featured white people but that whole thing just wasn't interesting to me. |

I hope this season they do 'something' about their portrayals of black women. A lesbian and a sister whose man is pretending to be her husband to keep up appearances while he sleeps with/loves a white woman, and a bunch of crack whores. Come on! With all of those brothers, we can't come out looking any better than that? No offence to lesbians, but 'come on'! |

If you think about it, one of the key cop roles (besides Kima) the lady cop on the surveillance team - is portrayed as a great thinker - she's always cracking the codes. Other than that the cop world is mostly a man's world, so I don't expect to see many positive portrayals of Black women on this show. |
