ABM, I'm going crazy! I have two LPs by the ROTARY CONNECTION and I love it!! There's a "sitar" (an African musical instrument very popular in Sudan) playing in some of these songs! This group is like a cross between the Moody Blues, Grateful Dead and the Fifth Dimension IMO---but BETTER than all three. Very understated for a psychedelic outfit. I can't get over Minnie Ripperton and "RESPECT". I wonder if SLY STONE copied them a little? I don't have "Black Gold of the Sun" unfortunately. I have "Aladdin" from 1967 and "Songs" from 1969. Amazingly, they still sound FRESH---and because of the slight "scratching" on my albums, I cried listening at first, because it took me home to Virginia and creek life and grown folk. I love this music and encourage everyone to buy the CD collections of their albums at Amazon.Com I have this one! "SONGS"

Kola, Toldjah so! That "RESPECT" is somethin'. Ain't it? Another of the Rotary's albums titled "Rotary Connection" includes a song called "Memory Band". A sample of the sitar on that song was included in The Fugees great cover of Roberta Flack's great "Killing Me Softly". And that SAME sample had been included on Tribe Called Quest's very popular "Bonita Appelbaum". "I am The Blackgold of the Sun" is on Rotary's final album titled "Hey Love" Btw: In case you didn't already know. The guy on the center left of your first photo (with the red garment) is the GREAT CHARLES STEPNEY himself. |

No, I didn't know!!!!! Thanks for telling me. Yes, "RESPECT" is kick'n the shit out of me. And let me tell you something--there is NOTHING like listening to these on vinyl. I just get goosebumps on certain songs... it's magical. So glad you turned me on to this stuff. I'm going to order the big CD compilation that has like 40 songs.

Kola, That RESPECT is so DIFFERENT from Aretha's version you'd hardly know they were the same songs. Another of my favorites on "Songs" is "The Weight". |

YES----I love "The Weight"!!!!! Actually, there's only maybe 2 or 3 songs that aren't capturing me on "SONGS". They're just so SERIOUS about making great music and being DIFFERENT---but they don't hit you over the head about it, which is refreshing. "RESPECT" does remind me of Aretha's ABM, but it's kinda---dare I say---better. I mean, it's more about the meaning of the SONG than about Aretha's great attitude and feminist message on the Hit Single version. I just love it.

Kola, Some of the songs don't work as well as the others. Initially, Charles and Marshall Chess were trying to capitalize on the fame of great Rock & R&B songs. So with some of them they may have been 'forcing it' a tad too much. The later Rotary albums, culminating in the fantastic "Hey Love", were almost entirely co-written by Charles. So you can sense he was more invested in the songs. |

You asked the right man about that music. ABM is still wearing sideburns, platform heels and bell bottom pants. Don't ask him about nothing cut since 1982, though. |
