I have a nascent hypothesis I'm working that asserts that it might be better for Blacks as a whole if we were LESS talented in athletics and entertainment. My argument is if we were not as dominant in basketball, football, singing, dancing & rapping, etc., Black foks could and would be forced to focus on OTHER areas of education, industry and culture that might bring greater benefit to a much BROADER proportion of Black foks. Where and how might you agree and disagree? |

I think FAME is the distinguishing factor between Black entertainers and professional athletes and Black entrepreneurs, educators, and professionals. Many Blacks have and continue to make strides in the latter industries. However, we do not hear about them as much or as often because these professions are not inclusive of public spotlight and scrutiny. |

If we were LESS talented in those things that would be that fewer blacks who are making money. You are big on bringing up the Jews. Did you know there was a time when the Jews dominated basketball (blacks not being allowed to play whites) and certain classes of boxing? Black people are just starting the process of urbanization and integration into American life. The groups that do this get into crime, politics, entertainment, sports. All of them have done it. The Irish. The Italians. The Jews. You can focus on these areas all you want. Until black people build a financial infrastructure that can support professionals the number will be limited--face it if a white man spends all his life building a law firm he doesn't do it so he can turn it over to a black person--he is going to turn it over to his son or daughter-- And don't even go there talking about how white folks will have to bow to merit--they'll hire a brilliant coon to do all the work and their son will still have his name on the firm and take home the money. It's the American way. |

I tend to agree with Abm's hypothesis mainly for the examples we are setting for the young black men and women coming up. By showing success solely through sports and entertainment and not entrepreneurship and other fields, we are setting the young ones on a path and limiting their potential development as individuals. That is why I think mentorship is SO important. Doctors, entrepreneurs, lawyers, real estate agents, journalists, architects, engineers need to reach out and make themselves visible to the youngsters and let them know that it is possible to succeed in these fields...

Urban_scribe, I agree the lure of fame, no matter how elusive and fleeting, is our great Achilles Heel. Chris, I am QUITE aware of how Jews (and other White ethnic groups) used to dominate in assorted sports. But they broaded their perspective and reach. It's time we seek to do the same. Maybe if we were less talented in sports we might STOP living pipe dreams and focus on working together towards some mutual benefit. And, thus, maybe we'd be LESS subject to the designs of the White guy who uses us to garner wealth/power for his progeny. |

We must excel in our chosen professions regardless of the field. If we are talented at sports and music, we should pursue those ventures but with more of a focus on the business aspects of those arenas. We shouldn't strive just to sing and dance but also to write, publish, produce, distribute and manage. We must seek self-determination and self-empowerment and stop relying upon others to provide us with our needs. We are highly intelligent and motivated people, I just wish that more of us would combine our resources and efforts for the common good. |

Mzuri, I'd give up every BIT of our dominance in music, singing, sports, etc. if I can garner and even exchange from pre-eminence in science, engineering, mathematics, entrepreneurialism, literature, etc. |
