http://www.nypost.com/seven/07232006/gossip/pagesix/pagesix.htm July 23, 2006 -- OPRAH Winfrey made a big mistake by "outing" herself and Gayle King as non-lesbians in the latest issue of her O magazine, according to public-relations experts. The "best friends" - "after 30 years of four-times-a-day phone calls" - deny "those tabloid rumors" that they are gay, not that there's anything wrong with that. "I've told nearly everything there is to tell. All my stuff is out there," Oprah says. "People think I'd be so ashamed of being gay that I wouldn't admit it? Oh, please." But public-relations gurus - most of whom declined to speak on the record - say the maneuver will backfire by only bringing more attention to the rumors. "There must be a billion people who would have never even suspected it," said Bobby Zarem, the legendary spin-master portrayed by Al Pacino in "People I Know" (2003). "This brings attention to something that the average person never thought about. It's a huge, huge mistake." Winfrey's and King's denial also gave rival TV hosts the chance to lambaste Oprah with skepticism and snide innuendo. "When did we reach the place where celebrities feel the need to announce this?" wondered MSNBC's king of snarkiness, Keith Olbermann, on Tuesday night. "The evidence, theoretically, for Oprah being gay is really strong," replied Tom O'Neil of In Touch Weekly. "Oprah is really butch. If you took a good drag queen, a good drag queen version of Oprah, and put it next to Oprah, you would not be able to tell these two apart. "No. 2, she and Stedman [Graham], they've never gotten married," O'Neil told Olbermann. "Come on, we know what that's about. No. 3, her friendship with Gayle, she keeps saying, has been a 'fun ride.' Well, I think I know what it's about when two chicks say they are having a fun ride." The next night, Joe Scarborough, on the same low-rated cable channel, implied that Winfrey, if she were gay, would have very good reason to hide the fact. "Yes, right, she could just come out and announce it. She'd still be the queen of daytime TV, right? Middle-class women across America would still follow her, right?" Scarborough scoffed. His guest, Tina Dirmann, of Star magazine said, "They want to know why people think they're gay? Because they talk about how much they love and how much they mean to each other all the time . . . Oprah calls their friendship 'otherworldly' . . . We're all sick of it at this point." |

OMG! Oprah is receiving bad press! I can't believe it's happening. The PR people have a point that most ppl never thought about it, because those two being lovers never entered my mind until the other day when the denial was in the news. |

Well. I think a touch of the suspicions likely ALWAYS there when you have rich, high-profile person who's never married or even had kids. But I think her public denial's DEFINITELY incited more attention to such than might have ever otherwise existed. |

Oprah had a baby before when she was 14. But the infant was only a few weeks old when he/she died. |

I think she blocks that experience out because whenever she does episodes on childbirth she acts as if she never birthed a child before. Seriously, you would never realize that she actually carried a child before. |

I think a lot of homosexuals love to accuse celebrities of being gay because they believe doing so gives credibility to the act. Many also love to slander people to get even with them by accusing them of being gay, especially if they think it will annoy them. It’s all the bigotry they love to accuse others of engaging in against homosexuals, so it’s really absurd. So just bringing it up is asking for trouble because some may even resent her because they perceive her to be implying she’s not “down” with homosexuality, -god forbid. That’s one of the main reasons I’m so opposed to homosexuality, I believe it brings about a lot of confusion and unnecessary complications to human relationships that we could certainly live without. It also destroys the innocent non physical intimacy between members of the same sex. It is a sad day when everyone is reduced to a vessel of pleasure and we can’t enjoy each others company without someone trying to turn it sexual or some gutter-heads try to define it as such because that’s how they are. I think it really cheapens the beauty of what real sex is intended for. But I also realize how the power of strong cultural influences have created the conditions that foster its growth and acceptance. |

Shemika, it has been my experience that it is heterosexuals who like to hurl "accusations" of homosexuality at folks, not gays and lesbians. (Now, one might question these people's comfort with their own sexuality, but that's a different story...)

D23: I've been wondering the same thing. I hope all is well with her and her husband (who, I think she said at one point, was very ill).

I honestly don't believe that Oprah's gay...or Gayle. I have also had a female friend that I called on the phone 4 times a day and shopped and lunched with all the time, and we both were Dick-riders.

"Shemika, it has been my experience that it is heterosexuals who like to hurl "accusations" of homosexuality at folks, not gays and lesbians. (Now, one might question these people's comfort with their own sexuality, but that's a different story...)" Straight people who realize the havoc homosexuality is reeking on human relationships and family structures complain about it or get upset about so many members of the opposite sex being gay, especially since there is such a shortage of suitable men. Because these people don’t care about nothing but another flash in the pan experience they think their next conquest might bring. They don’t care about the confusion this brings to society, whether he’s married, has children, or is someone’s boyfriend or future husband. It’s a social catastrophe that shouldn’t be ignored. But gay people tend to accuse members of the same sex of being gay because it’s a way of trying to control them and objectify them and make them into what they want them to be, practicers of homosexuality like them – real or imagined. They also do it to get even with people they resent for disagreeing with them or rejecting their advances.

Yvettep & Shemika, I don't think EITHER straights or gays have an exclusive on hurling unfounded accusations about sexuality. I think there's some of that going on BOTH sides of the aisle. Kola, Although I like to make fun of it, I really don't know and certainly don't care whether Oprah and Gayle are gay. But I do think Oprah might have done herself and Gayle a favor by AVOIDING all the advertising about how wonderful and special their friendship is. Because, come on now. What grown foks, especially in the Entertainment business, carry on like THAT about their friendships? |
