Saw (Troy's boy) John McWhorter on a panel at the 2006 Harlem Book Fair yesterday. He was doing pretty well. Made some interesting points about our needing to focus less upon intra-racial squabbling (e.g., hip-hop is evil, lightskinned vs darkskinned Blacks) and more upon securing our vote. But then McWhorter suggested Black foks consider voting for Republicans, partly to establish more of a presence amongst the GOP who have political power and partly as payback against the Democrats who’ve used Black foks like cheap hoes. That sound good but then one of his fellow panelists, a younger brotha, disagreed with one of McWhorter’s comments about the Voting Rights Act. And another panelist (look like a bald Henry "The Fonz" Winkler) took what the younger brotha said and REALLY tore into McWhorter’s shyt. His very relevant rebut to McWhorter was in essence How the hell you gonna vote for a party that's routinely "LYNCHED" millions of Black votes? And he was seconded by Paul Robeson, Jr. (Who also demanded that Black foks "punish" Black traitors like Condi Rice.) McWhorter really got his nutes handed back at him with THAT one. I could not tell whether McWhorter attempted to rebut the guys. Because, unfortunately, the panel summarily ended. I think the 2006 Harlem Book Fair is being re-aired on one of the C-SPAN (on mine it’s played on C-SPAN2’s "Book TV") stations today. And I think McWhorter started talking about 2 hours and 50 minutes into what was aired. PS: McWhorter admitted to having NEVER voted Republican. That one THERE was a shocker to me and had to have been a shocker to his conservative supporters and his progressive polemics alike. |

Thanks for the tip. I recorded the enitre program last night (24 July 2006). I haven't watched it yet since the entire show was a round three hours or so in length. I did watch about an hour or so when it first aired. I'll watch the part where McWhorter spoke later this evening when I get time. I did see Lawrence Otis Graham speak on the panel. I read his book A Member of the Club: Reflections on Life in a Racially Polarized World when I lived in Japan in 1997. I do recall very vividly one chapter where he launched a vicious scathing attack on black men who date or marry non-black women. I was really taken back by the tone and severity of this chapter. It was totally unexpected. He did not mince his words of contempt for brothers who marry non-black women. And he dropped a lot of names! I'm also wondering if anyone read his book Our Kind of People: Inside America's Black Upper Class. He went into great detail about the light complexion stock of blacks and class (a favorite subject for a number of readers of this board). I have the book but have yet to read it. But I do recall this book being torn to shreds by the readers reviews at Amazon. I HAD NEVER SEEN A BOOK RECIEVE SUCH NEGATIVE AND CRITICAL REVIEWS! The readers reacted very harshly to his book. As I said, I have never seen so many negative book reviews....NEVER! Go to Amazon and check it out for yourself.

"Makes Me Wanna Holler" by Nathan McColl is another example of a Black Male Writer acknolwedging and castigating black men for their now infamous color caste system. I love how he described his teen years of TAKING PART in color coding hierarchy--because all the other black boys encouraged him to do so to prove he was a "real man". Isn't that sick? Black boys think having sex with a white woman makes them REAL MEN. But at the end of the book, he admitted that he wished he hadn't chosen his equally colorstruck "sweet" High Yellow baby's mama over the gorgeous "conscious" black high school sweet heart---who loved him but eventually got away. I also felt anguish when he described his anguish at seeing his daughter born---and the FEAR he had at what would happen to her in this society. Born, as he put it---"exploited by white men and devalued by black men".

And it's always the YELLOW men like McWhorter who doesn't see any need in discussing self-hatred and dark vs. light. What good is the briliance of a Self-destructive MATHMETICIAN...if he's still going to self-destruct??? I submit that the mental/emotional/spiritual makeup of a black man needs to be empowered before he can achieve ANYTHING.

"Isn't that sick? Black boys think having sex with a white woman makes them REAL MEN." I agree. Any sexually exploitive relationships can be sick. I’ve seen some brothers ruthlessly exploit and abuse white females. I never understood how some black women could approve of this behavior (black men dogging white or non-black women) when those same brothers would exploit and dog them out also given the opportunity. I'm sure many black women can testify to this particular behavior. Unfortunately, there are number of very self indulgent brothers out there. I have seen some of their deceiving and manipulative antics first hand. It was bad –real bad! They are not the only ones doing it, but as a group, they seem to take great pride in the macking, pimping, ho hustling and the playa’s game. I see it every day. It’s sad. It makes it difficult for the serious and honest black men. And contrary to popular opinion, there are quite a few out there.

I believe you Ntfs. I know MANY fantastic black men. My children's father was like a Prince from a fairytale. My adoptive father is a wonderful man (he's featured all throughout my autobiography) And, the only reason I come to this board is because fantastic black men like ABM and Troy Johnson and others are here---and though I can be a bitch---they love and protect me. And teach me. One of the ending chapters in my memoirs is called "GOD IS A BLACK MAN", because I think that someday...that will be true again. There are a LOT of good--not good, but GREAT-- black men.

Kola: "What good is the briliance of a Self-destructive MATHMETICIAN...if he's still going to self-destruct???" A most fair and worthy question, indeed. Well. As one who values intellect, part of me hopes that McWhorter is made to confront a truth that transcends and surpasses that which he's likely to pounder over coffee with his haughty White collegues at the Manhattan Institute. Such things have a way for eventually happening to Black people, in America. |

McWhorter, I thought, was a linguist. Kola: But wait! You can have a brilliant dark skinned brother and he too can self-destruct. I wouldn't necessarily call Wesley brilliant, but he is an interesting contradiction...aint he. one moment you will see him in African garb and the next he will disparage[at least in the past]black women. |

You're right Yukio. Wesley is the father of McWhorter. It's a cycle.
