I think that most Black men are wonderful. And every once in a while I come across one that’s phenomenal. Let me count the ways that I think Black men are the SHIT: They come in all shapes and sizes. They are fine as hell. They are intelligent. They have firm and muscular bodies. They are so damn opinionated. They have mellifluous voices. The sound of their voice alone can drive a woman wild. They are fun to be around (most of the time - when they're not being moody - Black men can be so damn moody at times) They are sexy. They have a strong sexual prowess. They are really good in bed. Most of them are very well-endowed. They smell good. I just love them. I can't help it!!! This ain’t everybody. You know who you are (or aren’t)!

They are wonderful companions They are excellent family men; protectors and providers They rise above adversity They are pillars of the community They will tell you about yourself They are courageous They appreciate a nice home and a homecooked meal They are great kissers And yes, Black men DO go down! |

Couldn't you say that about all types of men? One's race doesn't determine how good he can kiss or head the home. Instead of us pandering to each other, why don't we focus on treating each other with some respect. If we respected each other in the first place, there would be no need for us to kiss each other's asses, now would it? Don't give me extra-special treatment and inundate me with compliments just because I am a black woman. Just treat me like the lady that I am when you see me, and I will most certainly do the same for you. |

Fortified, you're absolutely right - this can and does apply to men of all racial backgrounds. But, I understood Mzuri's message as paying hommage to BLACK men specifically. I added some additional qualities that I love about Black men to her already wonderful, well-rounded list. My feeling is, when men of other racial/ethnic backgrounds become as stepped on as Black men, yet still rise above it and go on to achieve both personal and professional greatness, then we can pay tribute to them. For now, I can't think of any other group of men who are worthier of receiving recognition for all the good they do, and wonders they work, despite having the odds stacked against them like a motherfucker. |

Exactly US. Black men have overcome adversities that would cause weaker men to wanna curl up and die. Fortified - You feel that Black men aren't the shit? Do you believe that white men are better athletes? Do you think whites are stronger, better, faster? Do you think a white boy can fuck you better than a Black man? Do you feel that whites are superior to Blacks? Do you??? Because I do not. And regardless of what anyone says, I think that Black men are superior to ALL others. And if you don't think so, please visit the Black Men Ain't Shit thread and add your opinions over there. This is The Black Men ARE the shit THREAD and if you have nothing positive to add, move out! |

Mzuri, Lennox has a great body and all but he seems a bit too "Daddyish" to me. Is he in his 40s? Everytime I look at him, I imagine him reprimanding me for staying out too late at night. Mzuri said: Fortified - You feel that Black men aren't the shit? Do you believe that white men are better athletes? Do you think whites are stronger, better, faster? Do you think a white boy can fuck you better than a Black man? Do you feel that whites are superior to Blacks? Do you??? ***************************** To answer your questions: I know of GREAT black men, like my brothers, my uncles and cousins and my black male friends who are doing the damn thing. I pay hommage to them as much as possible--as well as the greats: Malcolm X, Marcus Garvey, Percy Julian, Elijah McCoy, Barack Obama and the likes. They are great not because they are black, but because they are GREAT men who are hard-working, driven, principled, strong in the face of adversity and respectful of themselves and everyone around them. What I won't do are blanket statements that also vindicate the ones who aren't doing shit! Are white men better athletes? They may not play basketball or track as well as black men, but who won the World Cup? What type of men win the Stanley Cup? What man has won the Tour de France seven times? Lacrosse? The list goes on. Furthermore, if I am going to give black men props, I'd focus more on those who are owning corporations, excelling in Mathematics, Science, Medicine. Black men can excel in sports and entertainment because they are NOT challenged in that arena. Give me a brotha who continues to press on and shine and use his brain and talents in an arena where he is challenged daily by his white and asian counterparts. Like my friend who is excelling in Biomolecular Modeling in the midwest. Do I think a white boy can fuck me better than a black man? I don't get around much, but my best sexual experience was not with a white boy but with a man who was attentive to my sexual needs, was tender, not degrading, and yes, he is white. Anybody can fuck somebody if they watch a few pornos and practice a few moves. And that has NOTHING to do with race or ethnicity. It takes a real man to learn an individual woman's zones, and what makes that woman hot. Are Whites superior to Blacks? Obviously not. NO ONE IS SUPERIOR. Whites need to recognize that. And Blacks need to understand that reversing superiority isn't going to make things better for them. Just treat one another with respect in the first place. Stop bashing each other and AFFIRM THE INDIVIDUAL. |

Fortified, This is a BLACK website. So why would you decry someone's attempt to praise Black men (or women, if so desired)? You make some good (though, frankly, very OBVIOUS) points. Certainly not ALL Black men (or women) are worthy of praise. Sure there are PLENTY of lousy Black men (and women). But is there's PLENTY of negative sentiments that are OFTEN being expressed between the sexes, here, there and EVERYWHERE. Don't you think we could stand a little praise. And hey. Who knows? Maybe a few more brothas (and sistas) might seek to live up to some of it.

Abm, I am NOT saying that none of us are worthy of praise, but what exactly are we praising? The ability to run fast, fuck, go down on a female? Surely, we are more than that. I would like to praise you, Abm for being a strong, independent thinker in a society that aims to do the thinking for you. But that has more to do with you, than your being black--though, yes your race does play a (minor) role in that. My whole point is that you don't really hear Jewish men praising Jewish women, Chinese women praising Chinese men. Why? There is no need to, because the respect is there in the first place. There was a 'need' for the "Black Men are the shit thread", because there was a "Black men ain't shit thread". All I'm asking is, where is the respect in the first place?

Fortified - My questions were rhetorical. But thank you for responding. Most Black men don't even consider bicycle riding or the other sports you mentioned an athletic activity. That's because there's a major difference between ATHLETICS that require physical strength and stamina and competitive SPORTING events such as steering a yacht. And we already know that Blacks don't take to the water or the snow that much anyway. If you found a white man that can do the do better than a Black man, then more power to you. And that's fine with me. To each his own. Go do your thing with the white man - it makes no difference to the rest of us. This thread is dedicated to the Black man - I didn't say anything against anyone else. If you got that impression, you got it wrong. And in case if you missed it, this is Thumper's Corner, which is a part of Troy Johnson's African American Literature Book Club. This is the spot for Black folks to congregate and discuss issues that pertain to us. I don't judge people based on whether they are in corporate America. I have been in business for several years, I won't discuss my business but it's substantial considering that it's a one-man operation. And I have complete control over my time and every other aspect of my life. I could lay in the bed all day long, and I'm still going to make money because most of what I do is on auto-pilot. I have two male associates who are multi-millionaires - besides those two, I don't personally know any men who make more money than me, so I don't judge my brothers based on their income - if I did they couldn't measure up anyway. But if I see a brother operating a web design business or repair shop (or whatever) I'll give him his props because it takes A LOT OF INITIATIVE just to contemplate running your own business, let alone to actually bring that into a real live money making venture. And he might not make a ton of money, but he's doing his own thing. That's what's important to me. Self-empowerment and self-determination. And if the brother has a regular nine to five, that's alright with me too. I prefer people who can carry their own weight - regardless of how they do it. As far as Blacks being superior - do the research for yourself. Black people's skin doesn't wrinkle up and it's believed that the melanin in our skin makes us more intelligent. We are physically superior, anyone can tell you that. And most Black people just connect, we know each other, in a way that we cannot connect with others. All my initial comments were specifically targeted towards the Black man. For example - I said Black men smell good. Even when they're funky they have that rich musty scent - they don't have the stale wet dog odor that white ppl tend to have. And let me reiterate for clarity - when I post to this forum - I'm only speaking for my own self and expressing my own personal opinions. I wasn't BASHING anyone. I was simply trying to acknowledge the positive power of the BLACK MAN! The BLACK MAN whom I LOVE, ADORE and WORSHIP!!! If I have offended anyone at any time - please accept my sincerest apologies. |

Mzuri, I am not decrying your efforts to praise black men. I respect you for that. That was NOT the point of my post. I actually see your need to balance things out because as of recently black men were being bashed left, right and center on this board. My point is, if we respect each other in the first place, recognize each other's individual strengths and weaknesses, unite to fight against the ills that are affecting the community--there would be no need for pandering--how we feel about each other would be understood. For example: We should focus on building a socioeconomic backbone in the black community instead of labeling black women as golddiggers and saying that black men don't have shit. As for the whole superiority thing: I don't think any race is superior. I am not going to feed into that notion. We are all diverse with strengths and weaknesses. I am proud of my genetics and heritage--but I would still be proud even if I wasn't black. You don't choose your race or ethnicity, you choose what you do with the talents you have been given, you choose how you treat others, you choose how you live this life given your circumstances. Both black men and white men can be athletic. Soccer is a very demanding sport and is equally dominated by Latinos, Africans, Arabs and Europeans. Both black men and white men can have brilliant scientific minds (e.g., Percy Julian and Neils Bohr). black men and white men and asian men can invent cutting edge technologies and excel in business. We don't need to waste our time determining who is superior to whom, or who is better at what. Rather, we should focus on bettering our current state, armed with the notion that we are more than just physical workhorses with extra melanin.

Fortified, It seems whenever we enter into these kinds of conversations, foks go to FAR in one extreme or the other. There's nothing WRONG with a man being able to run fast, fuhk and lick a woman. Hell. I consider myself quite fluent in all of those (though, admittedly, I am not QUITE the sprinter I was on my high school track team). But I'm ALSO a highly educated and competent husband, father, provider and citizen. We Black men can do myriad things well. We can and many of us are good spouses, scientists/engineers, businessmen, social advocates, etc. I don't know how one can separate ANY part of one's heritage - including ones RACE - from that which forms him, be it good or bad. I can DIRECTLY attribute much of the motivation to some of successes to my desire to prove myself as a Black man. Moreover, some of my experiences as Black person prepared me in ways that might not have existed otherwise. I'm not saying I am what I am SOLELY because I am Black. But that most certain is a part of calculus of who and what I am and, all likelihood, will be. Lastly, and no disrespect, I don't much care about whether and how non-Black foks praise each other. At this point in my life, I really only care about what might work for BLACK people. And if some gratuitous congratulating helps, then by all means, let's do that. But I will say this: There are NO people on Earth who are more faithful about praising who and what they are than the JEW. |

Abm said: But I will say this: There are NO people on Earth who are more faithful about praising who and what they are than the JEW. ********** LMAO!!!! The Jewish community goes through great lengths to protect their identity, their history and their alliances. Black people can learn a thing or two from that. Jewish people don't waste their time pandering or bashing each other to the media--they are to busy merging and acquiring corporations and building legacies for their offspring. |

Abm said: Fortified, It seems whenever we enter into these kinds of conversations, foks go to FAR in one extreme or the other. I would be lying if I said I didn't feel that way. However, you are more than just a black man. You are a good father, provider, citizen, spirit. You could reach the same level of excellence regardless of your outer shell because of your spirit. I would praise YOU for THE PERSON THAT YOU ARE, regardless of your outer shell. There are tons of great black men out there who need to be applauded but don't receive enough praise for the INDIVIDUALS that they are because people are so pre-occupied with seeing a black man--and that includes both black and non-black people. |

Fortified, Being a Black man and a Black woman, especially in America, is a very unique and special thing and quality unto itself. There's a specific history, culture and legacy there that is the very bedrock of American freedom and democracy. Assuming you are Black, I think you should do yourself, your progeny and the world entire a great favor by recognizing and honoring that. |

WOW! If you are going to praise black men, at least praise those that make their living bettering mankind instead of calling women "bitches" and "hos". 1. Colin Hill CEO, President, and Cofounder, Gene Network Sciences Inc. http://www.spectrum.ieee.org/careers/careersarchive/people/nov04/1104lumi6.html 2. David Smith : field director of the Earth Conservation Corps (ECC), a local environmental organization that puts young people to work cleaning up their neighborhood and their lives. He was featured on 60 Minutes organizing a clean-up of the Anacostia River site. Anacostia is a neighborhood where unemployment is epidemic and 38 percent of its residents live below the poverty line. The murder rate there for African-American men is so high that some see themselves as an endangered species. http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2005/04/21/60minutes/main690002.shtml 3. Delano Lewis : President, National Public Radio (NPR) 4. Joshua Smith : CEO, Maxima Corporation In 1978, with just 15,000 of his savings, Joshua I. Smith started Maxima in Bethesda, MD, offering government agencies systems integration services and records management. I am of a ethnic background that is rich in history, culture and flavor. I also embrace my predominant West African traits. I recognize it and honor it, but I don't let rule my life. There is a difference. It is part of who I am, but it isn't all that I am. I don't give a shit if people look at me and only see a black woman. I embrace all aspects of me--inner and outer. I am an individual, not just part of a gender, race, or ethnic group. This is not just a board of black posters. Wow! This discussion is getting very heated. Actually, I see both sides making some very good points here. Mzuri, thank you very much for taking the time to create a thread just to give black men props. It's a breath of fresh air to the embittered cabal of black male haters that post on this board (and you know who they are!). I appreciate what you are doing. However, because someone may post an opposing view, please don’t take it personal and attack them. Just point out the flaws or errors in their commentary. I’ve seen you do this many times with impressive counter statements and intelligence. Fortified, you have made some very good points. Thank you also. I agree with a number of things you have said. I can appreciate independent thinking no matter how it goes against the grain. Not taking sides, but all of you are making a good case for your beliefs. They just differ. If someone questions what you write, it does not necessarily mean your statements are incorrect or cannot be substantiated. I don't think opposing views are necessarily a bad thing. As I have always said, differences of opinions and intelligent articulation of those points make this board spicy and interesting.

The language in that last fire fight was unlike anything I had heard before (my ears are still ringing!). I think the two of you actually agree more than you disagree. In fact, I think both of you have healthy positive views and appreciation for brothers. And I thank both of you for expressing those views. I'm just hoping that you won't launch one of your blistering pre-emptive nuclear attacks again. I really don't think it is necessary. So far, there have been differences who the various posters think is a sexy and attractive. I think that should be allowed. I don't see any serious conscious efforts to inexcusably disrespect another persons picks. As I stated before, I personally appreciate what you, Fortified and others have posted. And if you have noticed, the haters (again -you know who they are) have yet to post any of their divisive self serving psychotic digs in this thread.

FORTIFIED POSTS: Furthermore, if I am going to give black men props, I'd focus more on those who are owning corporations, excelling in Mathematics, Science, Medicine. LOL! And I am supposed to call you a sista? You're low class and you obviously don't read much. You have a thread giving black men props and the only brothas you can think of are rappers and athletes. You completely bypassed my post of black men who actually use their brains, and contribute to the betterment of the community. So who really thinks that black men are the shit? A 'sista' who only focusses on the physical and sexual side of the black man, or one who embraces his intellect, drive and individuality? You are worse than those white women who solely buy into the Mandingo stereotype. And you call me a trollop? LMAO!! Fortified - Obviously, you missed one of my very first attributes, which was that Black men are intelligent. And I did not post any athletes or rappers, nor did I mention anyone by name as you allege. I posted an image of Lennox Lewis in response to the pic of FLAV, in an effort to emphasize my idea of a respectable BLACK man. A public figure that most of us could relate to and whom I consider the epitome of what a Black man can be. I did this IN THE SPIRIT OF HAVING FUN AND KEEPING THIS THREAD POSITIVE. You believe that I'm low class and illiterate for starting this thread? Something that I intended in the spirit of goodwill towards my Black brothers? And you have the ability to judge my family's socio-economic background based upon my posts? You know my education level? If so, then I gotta hand it to you - you really are good. I must admit that I'm no blue blood but I can tell you this about my upbringing - I did NOT learn about lovemaking by watching porno flicks. I learned from having conversations with my MOTHER and my FATHER, and subsequently being with my HUSBAND, a gentle, loving yet strong Black man. I'm appalled that you would suggest that watching pornographic movies is a valid method of learning about one's sexuality. It is not. If that's the method by which you became enlightened, no wonder you're so misguided that you would value an intimate assignation with a white man over that of having a meaningful relationship with a Black man. You see, there's a major difference between fucking and screwing, and being loved and making love. But you're probably too detached to understand this and for that you have my sympathies. Now - let me share my thoughts on what being a real sister means to me, and this is not all inclusive. A real sister supports the Black man, she does NOT demote his worth by questioning and criticizing someone's sincere attempt to focus positive attention upon him. A real sister doesn't brag about how she prefers to have sex with white boys. And a real sister wouldn't say something as shallow as this: "if I am going to give black men props, I'd focus more on those who are owning corporations, excelling in Mathematics, Science, Medicine. As if a Black man has no value unless he is engaged in the fields you cite. But those are your opinions and misperceptions and you are entitled to them and you're free to express them. I simply asked you (and everyone else), that if you felt that Black men were NOT the shit, to take your derriere over to the other thread and post your opinions and praises for the white man there. You could have even started your very own thread. And you would have done this as a simple courtesy towards the rest of us, who were enjoying this thread. Instead you chose to trash this one up with your baseless accusations against me and your other tired rants - most of which I find pointless and immature, and definitely off topic. You have contributed nothing to this discussion but NEGATIVITY and PESSIMISM. Again, this is The Black Men ARE the shit THREAD. In case you still haven't grasped the essence of it - it was intended to be POSITIVE - for a change of pace around here. Since many of us are sick and tired of all the whining and negativity lately about how the Black man is so awful and useless and worthless. But unfortunately there are TROLLS such as yourself out here who cannot comprehend that. So let me ask you once again, if you disagree with this thread - the subject of which is that Black Men ARE the shit - then take your ass on and post your bullshit elsewhere. Go back to your Chinese, Jewish, or white ppl's discussion forum and post along with them, since that's the people you prefer to sleep with anyway. And because I have the distinct feeling that you are going to respond with some more of your groundless BULLSHIT - let me do you a favor and advise you that henceforth you will be ignored. Because TROLLS such as yourself are a waste of everyone's time. Especially mine. Thank you.

WOW! You can actually address me without the use of swear words! It's interesting how when one approaches a conflict with class, their points can come across clearer. I have never put white men or asian men above black men. I have never praised white men. You quote my posts but yet you didn't read them properly. I mentioned ONE man who learned my body and gave me an unforgettable sexual experience and he was white. I did NOT say that white men were better lovers. How can one know that? How could I say that? Have I ever had a loving relationship with a black man? I dated one off and on for six years, loved him with everything I had, loved him FOR THE INDIVIDUAL THAT HE WAS. And like ANY selfish man (regardless of race), he did what he wanted to do. Underneath it all men are men, women are women. We can celebrate our histories, unite in our respective cultures but underneath it all, we are individuals with specific needs. I sort of "laughed" at this thread because all the men listed were rappers and athletes. I don't undervalue those men, but what knowledge do we have of black men who are doing more than that? Who are actually active in their communities and helping the black man, woman and child? Where is THEIR praise? Black men need to be respected for who they are as men. Then should be seen as men FIRST before they are seen as "black men". So all of these threads bashing and pandering them in the same breath don't affirm him as a man. It's analogous to an abusive husband who beats the crap out of his wife, then shows up the next morning with roses and jewellery to make up for the night of abuse. What the husband needs to do is get help to solve the underlying problem(s). The same thing applies here. I have most certainly grasped the concept of this thread. If you read this post properly, you would understand where I am coming from. |

I would, however, lean closer to ABM's point, which was less about the appreciation of West African features andd culture, black history, etc..[although these are important to his point] but to the actual experience of being a black person in the U.S. With that said, and here I will side with Mzuri, there are times when one needs to back off and let what is, in my opinion, more important shine. I think what you have said about whites in sports, business, etc... is mostly true and, as ABM said, obvious. And this is a public site, and you have ever right to say what you want, but sometimes you gotta let a brotha get some love....let him shine! I'm not sure what you do for a living, your social and economic background, but all people who work, work hard at what they do...even though blacks excel in basketball...they are competing against the very best basketball players...and all of them work hard...you are creating an unnecessary hierarchy when you suggest that if blacks are not competing against other groups then their success has less worth... I think you have missed the point of the thread...it wasn't about hierarchies, it was about plain ol self-love. Also, if you watch a woody allen or any of these jewish initiated shows, you will see self-criticism.

Fortified: Interesting...LOL! We posted at the same time. I get you, but your post doesn't quite address what I'm saying, for I don't really think you get the point of the thread! You did not directly praise or place a white man or an asian man above a black man, but that is practically what you said. But I have misunderstood what you said. But there is still a fundamental problem here. And this is why I say you don't get the thread. Your points stem from a human[ or universal] position that focuses on people first, goodness first, etc...I can dig that. This is important, and I agree with it, for the most part. Thus, when you say that "Black men need to be respected for who they are as men, " I agree, wholeheartedly. But it is also here where we part ways. "It's analogous to an abusive husband who beats the crap out of his wife, then shows up the next morning with roses and jewellery to make up for the night of abuse." As I understand it, you are saying that while the gifts are nice hence the hypothetical praise he would get after he shows up with the gifts, he hasn't addressed the larger problem which is the abuse. The relation, I suspect, is that being a good black man is insufficient or partial if this black man is not being a good man. The thread is about black men, however. Not men! And really within each group, there is a specific set of values & practices, etc...that are particular to that group's experience and needs. This is what you miss and your analogy misses. Your onus on the general erases the particular experience that black men encounter. So that while, we can embrace and respect a good black man for beign a good man--who pays his bills, provides for the family, loves his children and wife, and is loyal--we also have to consider the unique experiences of a black man--the racism that he encounters on a daily basis, like no other man in this country....no other man! This is what you've missed.

No Yukio, I haven't missed that. You are missing what I am saying, and what I have said in previous posts. The black man does have a unique experience due to the racism he experiences. That is a given. That is known. But that seems to be the only focus. It seems that when celebrating black men, we seem to only address the racism that he faces, we seem to ONLY celebrate him in the context of him being black. We seem to have no understanding of what makes HIM a MAN. It's like white and asian men are MEN but the black man is a "black man". This is why the feminist movement has done a number on the black community. We haven't let the black man BE A MAN FIRST. This is why for example, if I were to make a thread praising black men, I would mention Hill Harper, Ben Carson, Colin Hill, David Smith and the members of NOI who actually work in the black community. These brothas are celebrated (to me) yes, because they share in the black experience, but not only that. It is what they have done as MEN, as LEADERS, as INDIVIDUALS. They excelled in arenas that challenged them. They pose a THREAT to the institution and ideology of white supremacy. They meet and exceed the definition of a MAN. They are more than attractive sexual beings in a smooth chocolate wrapping. They are spirits, with a genuine concern for betterment of black people. Black women and men share in the black experience and experience racism, but what are they doing about it? My analogy about the abusive husband was to show how black men were being treated (as a whole) on this board. Posters literally said, "Fuck black men", and blamed them for the problems with black women and berated their dating choices, yadda, yadda, yadda. All that verbal abuse was hiding a deeper problem between black men and women. So having threads that pander to EITHER group is not going to solve that problem. We need to get to the heart of the issue that is causing black men and women to lash out against each other. |

Fortified: I think you have missed the point of the thread and misunderstood what I said. The tread is fundamentally about black men. Not men! They are both distinct and related. Now, this does not mean that "we seem to ONLY celebrate him in the context of him being black," because he is never only black in the first place. There is really no such thing as being black w/o the experience of humanity, sex, nationality, etc... All of the men that you have listed did and do their deeds as black men...the man component is always there and the black commponent too is always there...there is no simple distinction that you seem to claim that this thread is making! This is what you don't understand, as I see it. In your attempt to embrace black men as humans first, you have placed black men outside the box of humanity. You have unintentionally and intellectually placed the black man in the black man box, but outside of the human box. And now, you want to place him in the human box...But the black man box is always in the human box, along with the white man box, and the asian man box, etc... If you take black people's humanity for granted, you do not have to play the: Am I a human or am I a black person game. Am I a black writer or am I a writer games...these games are themselves racist [though i am sure this is not your intent; and I am not saying that you do not take black people's humanity for granted, but the logic of your argument does not seem to]. These games are racist and ethnocentric because they assume that there is a such thing as a man, a writer, etc... and doing so implicitly makes unnecessary distinctions. I know this is not what you intend to say, Fortified, but it does implicitly govern your thinking. If I am wrong, forgive me...if I am correct, you are welcome!

But sadly some of them don't. And some of them could fuck up a wet dream, can't they??? ABM, NTFS, Yukio, Z & Schakspir - Thanks for accepting the love. I tried. US, Robyn, BB, SISQ & Yvette - Thanks for making this fun. Let's do it again soon. And to all the HATERS - HATE KILLS! So keep on hatin' harder and faster - maybe we'll be rid of you sooner. Yukio, I enjoy debating this with you, because you can discuss this with me rationally and maturely without cursing or debasing yourself. Thanks for debating this with me, regardless of whether or not you agree with me. It just goes to show that it is possible for some of us to have intellectual discourse without the savagery. I didn't have a problem with this thread in the first place. If that is what you got from me, I apologize. My issue was that abusing and then pandering to one another isn't going to solve the underlying problems of discord in the first place. Remember the "Compliment black women and you get this" thread? Was it not about black male celebrities complimenting black women specifically in a magazine? Wasn't one of those men Jaheim (an R&B singer), and in another interview not long after that, he called black women "golddiggers"? How are you going to compliment and then insult a group of women to the media all in the same breath? Isn't that indicative of a deeper issue? Where is the underlying respect for one another? If the respect was there in the first place, there would be no need bash or pander. Secondly, in the first post that Mzuri addressed to me, she said: "Do you believe that white men are better athletes? Do you think whites are stronger, better, faster? Do you think a white boy can fuck you better than a Black man?" ***************** Is that what defines a man? That was the point of my reply to her. Anyone can be an athlete with the proper training and practice and opportunity. Anyone can "fuck" with practice and instruction and enough lust. Now who was putting black men in a box here? I define a man by his inner AND outer: his leadership, principle, strength, practicality, wisdom, self-empowerment, the respect he gives, the respect he commands, courage under fire. There are men in general who display these traits. There are [black] men who display these traits, given that they are tested differently (and perhaps more often) than other men. My ultimate question is: how are we defining manhood? Why is the definition of manhood different for black men than it is for other men? Slavery and racism robbed the black man of his manhood and he has to fight to get it back. And how has his manhood been redefined? Through athleticism, and false machissimo (read: short-tempered thugs, ganstas, etc.). Look at the list of men presented in this thread. I profess to know it all, I am still learning. But I respect the black MAN as a man and as an individual FIRST. I try not to objectify or marginalize him. I am not going to bash him and praise in the same breath, especially to others. I am going to show him unwavering respect throughout and affirm him as a man and as an individual and not focus on the group to which he belongs all the time. Like I said, I have no problem with this thread. It is better than the "Fuck black men" sentiment [which is cancerous at best]. My question is: to we as black people really respect each other as people? |

Fortified wrote: My question is: do we as Black people really respect each other as people? That is an excellent question. But I feel it is somewhat off-topic in this thread. Fortified, I request you start a new thread with that question. I'd like to answer it, from my perspective of course, and I'm sure many other members would also. Hopefully, we can keep the "lightskinned" "darkskinned" thing out of it and focus on the social, economical, political and cultural issues which affect members of the Black American community as a whole. I believe this is a worthy topic of discussion and the great minds here have plenty to say on the subject. |

^^^^You are right, Urban_scribe, I should have moved my posts to a new thread. I realize that now. I was just getting annoyed with the mixed messages: Black men ain't shit, black men are the shit. How about we just treat black men as men and give them the respect that they deserve? Is that so hard? I remember lurking one time on a thread about black men who are in interracial relationships and why they chose their specific mates. There were a few jackasses that blamed black women solely for their choices (and hence objectified their white or asian women), but the majority said (either directly or indirectly) that their current mates treated them like men. Such a basic concept yet it is missing between black men and women. |

i think blackmen are the most beautiful to me...they're strong and supportive...loving and kind...blackmen express their feelings...they need love also...i know for a fact that most blackmen DO WANT US!!! i listed an ad on craigslist the response was OFF THE CHARTS!!! totally what i least expected...i stopped counting after 200 responses. but i will tell you this, the first responses i got were from whitemen calling me n*66#$ bitches and that they are better for me than a blackman and that their dicks were bigger and the like, this 'men' reinforce why the best choice for me is one that is the inventor of just about everything we us in this country to this day and the back bone of our people...THE BLACKMAN. |

I agree with what you say Mzuri. Why someone would take a light-hearted post and have it descend into is a mystery. The white man doesn't praise the white women because he doesn't have to. Turn on the television, read the newspaper, hell, everywhere you go you see some for or the other of white men praising white women in whatever form. The concept of beauty is eurocentric in this society. A white man doesn't have to verbally praise a white women, it's all around us. So why the fuss? I reiterate, I totally agree with Mzuri. Fortified this is just a topic in 'in praise of Black Men', not a thesis on the whys and wheretofores of why we shouldn't praise them. Sometimes thing are just what they seem, nothing more or nothing less. |

Fortified, First off, I agree with several of your posts and find all of them interesting. You are saying exactly the same things that your adversaries have argued vigorously to some of the posters with...dare I say...a more authentic view of blackness. Your words and their sudden change of heart are ironic. So it’s been fun reading your posts. Referring to one of my threads, however, and holding it up as an example of the incessant “man bashing” that you believe is the focal point of this forum is the part where I wholeheartedly disagree. Black women bashing (racism toward black women by black men and other posters) have permeated these threads for years--and has reached its peak over the last twelve or so months. I joined this site as a poster for one reason. Black women were being ripped to shreds by many of the posters that are still here. The very first thread that I reacted to was an article providing “evidence” for the theory that black women are genetically closer to men (as opposed to women), supposedly due to of the amount of melanin in heir skin. Kola had been away for months and none of the posters responding to the thread seemed interested in countering any of this; infact most of them were adding to and agreeing with it--and so I spoke up and have been doing so ever since. As for my "black men aint shit thread," along with several of the comments made by a handful of female posters, it was done in opposition to the influx of cruel remarks being said, insinuated and subtly pronounced about black females, their "attitudes" and their bodies. From your previous posts I gather that you don't agree with such. You oppose hatred/disrespect toward black women, black men or any kind of people. However, in addition to your mischaracterization of what goes on in this forum, you seem to have passed on countless opportunities to respond as eloquently as you‘ve done here to the steady stream of threads/comments that so blatantly denigrates black women. You came here with a fistful of interpretations and a shit load of common sense to speak on behalf of the marginalized brotha. And you have every right to do just that. But classifying this forum as one that's done nothing but bash black men - while overlooking all that has been said about black women - is where you lost me. Perhaps you're not sensitive enough to certain issues. Perhaps you weren't here long enough to gain an accurate understanding of who's really being bashed. You're right to either one. Still I'd appreciate it if you’d at least leave anything that I was a part of out of your debate. It would also be nice if you were to characterize things properly; but hey, they're your interpretations. Other than that, keep keep'n yours real by showing Yukio and others what TRUE multiculturalism is all about. LMBAO!! |

Tonya, Thanks for the post. I don't agree with or support the bashing of black women either. I personally think that black women are the most disrespected people on earth. John Lennon did a song a while back called "Woman is the Nigger of the World". Could you imagine then what the black woman is? That along with the bashing of black men is why I posted what I did. If there was respect between black men and black women in the first place, there would be no need to bash or praise. My mistake was posting my point in this thread--I should have started a new one. I just don't think that bashing black men (or women) in return or overly praising them is going to solve the problem. This is going to keep happening unless we get to the heart of the matter and that is the lack of respect. |

Fortified: You ask: Why is the definition of manhood different for black men than it is for other men? Has someone said that the definition of manhood for black men is different than it is for other men? I have not, so why do you continue to respond to me with that claim? I have suggested to you that if black humanity is taken for granted, then there is no need to presume that the distinction that you pose exists in the first place! In other words, that you pose the question is itself problematic!

NOTICE the names: Wesley Snipes, Denzel Washington, Lennox Lewis Michael Jordan Almost ALL of the women on this thread keep naming deep chocolate Black Men they love so much---but how will those men be born if these two don't procreate? This is not GROSS---a chocolate man kissing a chocolate woman. They are both normal-looking people, and if you could SHAKE for a moment what America and the Slave plantation has done to your thinking...then you would see and appreciate that these are Authentic Black People and their kiss is no more "gross" than two White people kissing. There's not going to be any Black Men BORN if you don't wake up from BET and get a fucking CLUE.

Fortified, I really don’t want to get into a debate with you because, as I said, I don’t have a problem with anything else you said on this thread; and I don’t plan on participating here as I did in the past, so I’m not interested in much of a response. I just found part of your statement somewhat questionable: ((((I just don't think that bashing black men (or women) in return. . .is going to solve the problem.)))) By “bashing” I’m going to assume you mean stark criticism rather than constructive criticism or a softer approach. If this is the case, you clearly are not one who practices what she preaches. Either that or, in your view, the word “bashing” does not apply to black women under harsh scrutiny as easily as you’ve related it to black men. Here are several statements that you made regarding black women. Is bashing them they way you’ve done here really more acceptable than bashing anybody else? Fortified: I hate to hate on the sistas, but they think looking good is getting the nails done and the hair did. They are going around obese and many are complaining about not being able to find a man. Why do you think that is. Men like meat on their bones--not a lard-ridden carcass!!Forget about the hair and nails--focus on the body! I have short nails and a simple hair do, but I have a 26" waist--and I am NEVER dateless for long. --June 22, 2006 - 10:07 am: "Black America heavier than ever beefore" thread. Fortified: . . .There are young obese girls out there who will try to mimic Beyonce by getting the weave, dressing skanky and shaking their behinds. They will do all of that before they even think about going on an Atkins' diet.--July 06, 2006 - 09:06 am "Do Beauty Images Affect Black Women..?" thread. Fortified: LOL!!! It's all about moderation. I don't like fried chicken, but I love french fries, chicken burgers, cinnamom rolls and all of that! But I demonstrate self-control!!! I EXERCISE!!! We eat to live, not live to eat. Sistas are eating themselves into an early oversized grave!! And those anorexic women are having equally disturbing relationships with food. Food is one of those pleasurable requirements to life, just like sex. Both are enjoyed when done in moderation!!!--- April 22, 2006 - 09:06 pm: Fortified: Ummm...Renata...black women diet more than anyone else? Where did you get that from? There are published epidemiological studies that show that eating disorders are much more common among white women than among black women, that white women diet more than black women. Obesity is reported in 73% of black women and 56% of white women. Diabetes (type II) is reported in 91 per 1000 black women versus 61 per 1000 white women. There are black women who diet, but there are waaaayyyy more who overeat…--April 23, 2006 - 07:36 pm Fortified: Not everyone who has diabetes is clinically obese, but clinical obesity increases your chances of becoming a type II diabetic. IMO, many black women diet because they do not have healthy relationships with food. We either overeat ourselves to obesity, or we are so afraid of becoming like our obese sisters that we binge and purge or turn to quick fixes. The majority of us fit into the former category. --April 23, 2006 - 07:58 pm: "Why do so many people hate Mo'Nique" thread. |

"Fortified"---that was me who said FUCK BLACK MEN....and what do you have to say about it?? I've loved every black man in my path that would let me...and I've given birth to 2 black men---something millions of Black men in this country would rather die than do. I've written a WHOLE GODDAMNED BOOK about my intentions----I don't BASH black men--bashing isn't good enough ---I aim to murder, kill and destroy this whole STRAIN of black men that hate black people and are out to destroy our people. FUCK 'EM!! Sorry no good motherfuckers. You call it "male bashing". I call it telling the goddamned TRUTH. And whenever I feel like syaing "FUCK BLACK MEN"----be sure that I sure in the hell will. When you take your SMUG ass and confront the WOMAN BASHING in the HOLY BIBLE and the KORAN...the WOMAN BASHING on your local radio stations, BET and in the blatantly colorist films and programs that BLACK MEN produce----THEN I will give a shit about you not wanting Black men to be bashed. What is a black man without my love and respect? NOT A GODDAMNED THING. And this is not about black men/white women. OTHERWISE, I wouldn't have so much love for Quincy Jones--a man who married 5 white women---but LOVES his black sisters and black people to the bottom of his heart, and is therefore loved by me.

Fortified: Isn't there a difference between stating that obesity in black women is on the rise and they need to exercise and "FUCK BLACK MEN"? Tonya: I'm not the one kicking rhetoric like I'm holier-than-thou. But since you asked--no--there isn't a difference between saying "fuck black men" and calling black women "LARD-RIDDEN CARCASSES" ...except the latter is much more personal, plus, frankly, it borders on racism and is in your case a highly intense form of double self hate. And if it's not woman bashing...I don't know what is. |

When did I say that ALL black women are lard-ridden carcasses? I was only addressing the obese ones who choose to be that way. I am not peddling a "holier-than-thou" attitude in the least. But if you're going to accuse me of bashing all black women (when I am a black woman myself) and lumping them all into one category, then show the proof. Weren't you the one who solely blamed black men and light-skinned black women for the black woman's pain? My point is that is goes both ways. If black men and women showed basic respect for each other, there would be no need to go out of our way to bash or praise one another. The respect would speak for itself.

Fortified: "My point is that is goes both ways. If black men and women showed basic respect for each other, there would be no need to go out of our way to bash or praise one another. The respect would speak for itself." This is a cynically faulty argument you're making. Because a man might sincerely and greatly love, respect and honor a woman YET still go out of his way to praise her (e.g, via euphonic prose, poems and songs; a diamond ring; a trip to Paris, etc.). In a healthy, loving relationship these would NOT be mutually-exclusive tasks. Heck. I think in an ideal world, they'd be mutually-INCLUSIVE. |

(((“My point is that is goes both ways. If black men and women showed basic respect for each other, there would be no need to go out of our way to bash or praise one another. Take a look at some of our most recent threads/comments: “…Fat ass pregnant rhino” Is Oprah a “dyke”? Is Alicia Keys gay? Is Countess Vaughn sexy (NOT!!)? Rihanna or Beyonce, who’s prettier? Kelly Rowland or Beyonce, who’s prettier? Is Venus more attractive than Serena? Keyshia Cole or Fantasia, who’s better? Alec Wek or Vanessa William, who’s best? Barbara Walters - the bitch Starr Jones - the black bitch Rep McKinney - the nappy-headed ghetto black bitch Angelina Jolie - She ain’t fooling nobody Oprah Oprah Oprah Rosario Dawson - big titty yeller Serena Williams - dog faced tramp Stacey Dash - naked skank Jill Scott - fat mutherfucker Mariah Carey - bland skeezer India Arie - just aint cute Heidi Klums’ ugly baby Halle Berry - overrated bitch Halle Berry - washed up ho Halle Berry - non acting heiffer Is Alec Wek Pretty? What makes Halle Berry Pretty? Christy Brinkley - is she really beautiful? Liz Hurley look like shit Karrine Steffans - wide pussy, dick sucking skank-trash-ho Tyra Banks J-Lo Britney Spears Paris Hilton Ashley Simpson Hilary Duff Brandy Oprah Oprah Oprah Eva Longoria Teri Hatcher Kimberly Stewart Jessica Simpson Oprah Oprah Oprah And the list literally goes on and on and onnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn. We don’t need a “black women ain’t shit thread” because we do nothing but judge ane BASH the fuck out of (black) women ALLLLLLLLLLL fucking dayyy!! And, no, you’re not the only one. All of us do it. But to say this is a male bashing site is the farthest thing from the truth, and that’s my point. Though I didn't mean to offend you. ABM this is really great-- But late last night, I listened to my Earth, Wind and Fire Greatest Hits...and my Deniece Williams albums. Especially Stepney's classic "Free". WOW!!!! His music was really the inner membrane of the people. I don't have "Come Into My Garden", but I remember how much my mother LOVED Minnie Ripperton's music. Hopefully, my first poem about Stepney--simply called "1931-1976" will be ready this evening. It's going to be BAAAAAD. I'm going to do 4 to 5 poems about him and then have a brief biography about his life---from the standpoint of what he meant to my family, my love life and the community's vibrance. He really made music for the flowers! I just love his genius so much! Another poem about him will be called "I Don't Wanna Lose Your Love". The whole CONCEPT of my new collection---is "The Artist"---and their dilemna of having to talk about the living...to the living. And the joy you get--the price you pay---the disappointment and destruction. This whole book of poems is really turning out to be special. Here's one of the poems--"SPERM" SPERM Muddy bank tadpoles find the Chrysalis of Christ on orange mornings Hands cut apples and hum Fingers pick pecans Mississippi pass on by the horn is clear: Daddy's home. Eggs sizzle into white parachutes and white cups load black coffee into a kind of maiden's precious "soup coolers". That's what Daddy calls it. The Chrysalis of Christ Hold Steady --Daddy's Horn Hands cutting apples for the Mississippi Pass on by Daddy's home Daddy's home Pass on by Tadpoles and horns forming notes that morning will never regret. Big 'Ol Orange. Morn'n to you. © 2006 Kola Boof

"Free" is one of my favorites, too. It's just...beautiful. Its so alive with color you can really actually SEE the music itself. And I loved Williams singing. She had a voice that was both exquisively soft and feminine yet strong, sure and quite nimble. I really miss hearing singing like that. I hear Charles really enjoyed working with her. But unfornately he died only a year or so after they started to work together. So all they were able to finish together was her inaugural album "This Is Niecy". Charles Stepney was one of the first Black producers to add great depth and expanse to popular American music. He had these delightful intros, interludes and breaks. And Charles Stepney's music had it some JAZZ, baby. That's a warm and lovely poem. It kinda reminds me of, well...ME, actually. Hahahaha!!! |

I just read over "1931-1976" and it won't be done by evening. It's too epic, and listening to the music, I'm becoming too emotionally invovled in it. But check soon. The poem "SPERM" is about a black jazz musician and his wife and kids's love for him. My book opens with a quote from the song "CALL ME": "My dearest...my dearest of all" --Aretha Franklin

I've witnessed a number of conversations with guys who've performed with and for Charles Stepney. All of them either begin or end with tears. One guy got so caught up he couldn't even start talking because of how emotional he'd gotten. |
