"DAYS Fires New Writer After Controversy"
DON KAPLAN
July 19, 2006 -- KOLA Boof, a novelist who claims she was kept as a sex-slave by Osama bin Laden, has been fired from her job as a writer for NBC's "Days of Our Lives" following fans being outraged about her sordid past according to published reports.
Boof, 37, had been serving as a ghostwriter for the soap opera since last spring.
"She does not hold a staff position with our writing team," co-executive producer Stephen Wyman said in a cryptic statement to Web site soapcentral.com. The statement did not explain if Boof had been fired. NBC officials referred inquiries to "Days" staffers, who didn't return calls.

Days of our Lives has fired one of the most infamous writers in its 30-year history. The move ends what turned out to be a far more controversial moment for the NBC soap than anyone would have thought.
Kola Boof, a Sudanese-born novelist and poet, had been serving as a ghost writer for Days of our Lives, and according to some sources, Boof has written most, if not all, of the story material that will air this summer.
If true, it would seemingly indicate that now-former head writer James E. Reilly was let go earlier than initially believed. As previously reported by soapcentral.com, multiple Emmy winner Hogan Sheffer will assume the head writer position in August.
And in true soap opera style, Boof has a secret connection - but not to anyone on the show. Boof is the former mistress of the terrorist mastermind Osama bin Laden. The complete details of Boof's past with bin Laden is chronicled in her autobiography, Diary of a Lost Girl. In 2003, however, Boof's relationship with bin Laden was revealed to be against her will and more akin to slavery than an affair.
Through her work on daytime television, Boof joked that she hoped to attain a much lower profile.
"I can now focus on writing far less controversial material and become a soccer mom to my two sons," Boof said. "I only wish my adopted Grandmother was alive to see me actually writing her [favorite] soap opera!"
Boof's name will first appear in the DAYS credits on August 8th, which is ironically the last day Reilly's name will be shown as head writer.

I hope it's not true. But the hypocritical way they were so outraged over Janet Jackson's breast being exposed that time, even trying to sue the station, nothing surprises me. Then the way they treated Judge Mableline and (I forgot her name), that one the security harassed at the checkpoint recently. When it comes to haters like that any excuse will do. I’ve seen that plenty of times for myself. |

well what do you know? after all her bragging and trying to rub her alleged stardom in the faces of the members of this board. this 4th rate attention starved liar has been dumped by the people she was praising only a few weeks ago. what goes around comes around. for all her nasty and evil words, this is her reward. this 4th rate writer got exactly what she deserved. gee, wasn't she talking about how they treated her like a queen just a few weeks ago? well, now i guess they have treated you the way you should be treated-like the nobody you are. im sure she will come back to this board with excuses as to why she was dumped, but the fact is she just could not cut it. they did not want her, because she is a liar, and everyone knows it. ahh-haa, ahh-haa. kola boof is just a pathetic liar. this is why she was canned. bravo, nbc. |

If the details of this article are true and I'm reading it correctly, it seems to me the ONLY reason WHY Kola was fired is because of her former relationship with bin Laden, which has almost NOTHING to do with her writing talents.
Isn't Days amongst the LOWEST rated soap operas? I'm not asserting that Kola's writing would singlehanded save the show. But it seems to me her unique talents & skills, personality and raw energy might help provide the show a much needed jolt of creativity.
So I wonder if the producers of Days have bitten off their noses to spite their faces.
Also. Kola said on a recent radio interview that she might become a writer for The Bold & The Beautiful, a more popular soap than Days. If that is true, then she may end up in a better position overall.

"DAYS" is actually now the #3 soap in daytime. It was #7 when I arrived a few months ago. Hogan Sheffer is the best writer in daytime and when he takes over--the show is going to experience both a ratings and creative boom.
None of this is the fault of the people at "DAYS"--they are very nice people that you all would love.
It's just like any character with a "sordid past"--advertisers fear scandal and Bin Laden is the new Hitler. Middle America, White America--they can't get around that name.
Other television projects are being negotiated.

Kola Boof,
I saw you on Cahuenga Blvd. this past monday. You were standing outside the Jewish bookstore and nodding your head as two black women were talking to you.
You are so tall and royal looking that I was too intimidated to say hello, but I walked by slowly staring at you.
I just wanted you to know that your pictures don't do you justice. You are so beautiful in person. The man I was walking with kept asking me were you real. You are so tall and different looking, he thought you were a doll or a mannequin at first. How do you keep your waist so small and your breasts so high? I would kill to have such a great body! I just cannot get over how beautiful you are compared to internet photos.
I am a worker at "Days of Our Lives" and I have glanced this site since you started working on the show. Be blessed and be well. More great things will come to you.

Ok, ok...my turn. Although I have disagreed with a number of things Kola has said in the past, I think it was total bs that she was released from her writing job because of her previous past. That particular situation is totally unrelated to what she was doing as a writer. It was nothing more than a political knee jerk reaction by some right wing executive who feared once the word leaked to the general press, there could be possible negative consequences by the politically brain dead white bread DOOL audience and the show sponsors.
To be honest, it pissed me off because I am very much opposed to censorship and seeking retaliation against people we do not agree with (e.g. the vindictive treatment of the Dixie Chicks and Linda Ronstadt for criticizing Bush). I hope Kola finds work writing for other shows as well as continuing her own writing career. As much as a number of the board members may have disagreed with her, we all support her creativity and her writing career. She is a very outspoken and tenacious black woman. I applaud that. I wish her luck in her future writing endeavors.

notice that nowhere did it say that kola boof was fired because of her "alleged" relationship with bin laden. this is an exuse being perpetuated by kola boof and her "followers". she was fired because the power that be at nbc didn't want her anymore. does anyone have any proof that she was fired because of her "alleged" (which i don't believe for a second) ties to bin laden? also i should correct myself and not say she was fired. the people at nbc have only said, "she does not hold a staff position with our writing staff". so she has zero ties to nbc. she has no place there. who knows what the reason is as to why she has no place there. but i have yet to hear from nbc as to the reason she is not a part of their writing staff. |

Hmmmmmmm...very good point. I guess from the initial wording, I thought it may have been related to her being dismissed. You are correct in pointing this out misjudgment. It could have been another reason(s) that we are not privy to. Thank you for the correction. |

Z - Let it go. Employer's are bound by confidentiality laws and they won't divulge those circumstances. And regardless of how you feel about Kola, she is a long-standing member of this forum. Most of us are here in the spirit of camraderie, to associate with other Black people, to seek opinions and advice, to discuss current events, things that are on our mind, or just to chit chat. Even if we disagree and argue with each other at times, we are bound together as boardie friends. And if one of us has lost employment and income, gets sick, loses a loved one, wrecks their car or whatever, we shouldn't also then have to face the wrath, judgment and ill will of our fellow boardies. Sometimes your boardie friends are the only friends you have. So please - be nice, try to be supportive, move on, and pick on Kola another day. Right now is not the time for that. |

Good Point. For assorted liability issues and given all the socio-political hubbub surrounding bin Laden, it's WISE of network and the producers of Days to avoid mentioning WHY Kola was released.
But we all KNOW that bin Laden's more feared and reviled by White Americans than any other person on earth. So it stands to reason that enuff of them may be Days fans who resent possible association between him and the show.
And I agree that Lil_ze should leave Kola be. Yeah, we have our up/downs with each other around here. But I think it's pretty shyty of him to attempt to kick her when she's down. |

I remember reading she'd gotten the position on the board not that that long ago. It's a shame but I don't think that stigma is ever going to go away. It's like the Traci Lords thing. She'll always be associated with her porn past.

I work at "Days". I am Armenian. Everyone on the lot kept whispering, talking. They would say, "That's bin Laden's mistress".
Members of the cast felt uncomfortable.
People on other soundstages were getting really upset, because they don't know the person. Only the rumors.
All the recent media press about Kola and her past tied to the show didn't help. The New York Post article caused fans to write in.
They don't want to support bin Laden's family members.

Well, after reading that, perhaps I was not premature in my assessment of why Kola lost her job. I tried to be objective and fair, but I think this post sheds the light we all needed on this matter. None of which surprises me in the least.

Mzuri, I think you're right. Maybe the name needs to go at this point in the game. All artists have to look at their marketability at some point in time and make adjustments. Koola has to do the same if she wants longevity in the business.

i think we all should be able to have mercy on a person in their time of distress. but, this kola boof has been SO utterly nasty in the way she takes about our people, that mercy isn't in the cards for her. she is a attention starved lying stranger. after reading many of her posts and noticing the vile, vicious way she has dealt with our people. i can only applaud nbc for disassociating themselves for this 4th rate lunatic. the powers that be at nbc had the foresight to step away for this publicity hungry nobody. mzuri, i am on this board in the spirit of camraderie, but im here to exchange ideas with members of our nation. im not going to go into how the africans are a different racial group than we are, but i will say this kola boof is NOT one of our people, and she can never be dealt with as i would deal with one of our people. if this stranger had come to this board humbly, praising oue people, than maybe she could have gotten some mercy. but, she came with a vile, disgusting position, and many, many times had said the vilest things about our people. so understanding how nasty this animal really is, i have NO sympathy for her. again, i applaud nbc for separating themselves from this attention starved third world liar. |

Moonsigns, I've talked to Kola and the Producers at DAYS loved Kola. It's an all-male run show, so that should tell you Kola would do fine. She wasn't fired because of anything she did.
She was fired because advertisers "TIDE" laundry detergent and people like that became nervous after their was publicity about her being on the show.
She may soon be writing for "All My Children", and she's doing a script for "Grey's Anatomy".

Osama Bin Laden recently topped TIME MAGAZINE'S "most hated person" in the world, voted by Americans Moonsigns.
"Americans" do not know Kola's story, it's never been explained in any of the soap stories, so I can see the advertisers getting nervous.

Americans love gossip and drama--and having their favorite "story" written by a woman who is clouded in mystery would seem to entice them rather than repulse them.
Unless it's a black woman.
They're more comfortable with Mammy type images of black women.
Kola is Mata Hari and they're not used to that.
Notice how they won't accept a "fat" white woman but they love a fat black one???
