Rep. McKinney Forced Into Runoff Web Editor: Tracey Christensen Last Modified: 7/19/2006 12:49:31 PM http://www.wxia.com/news/news_article.aspx?storyid=82143 Incumbent Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney was forced into a three-week runoff campaign after drawing less than 50 percent of the vote in her first re-election bid since her scuffle with a Capitol Hill police officer. McKinney only edged former two-term DeKalb County commissioner Hank Johnson by fewer than 1,500 votes -- 28,507 to 27,049. The two will pair off again in an Aug. 8 runoff for the Congressional 4th District. Johnson told his supporters Tuesday night, "We've still got a little ways to go, ya'll. Ya'll ready to fight some more?" As the results came in early Tuesday evening, McKinney supporters celebrated her lead over Johnson, but the votes tightened throughout the evening as more districts reported. At one point, Johnson had the lead over McKinney. "It's an exciting night. We've gone out and touched voters wherever they are in this district," Johnson said late Tuesday night. Just after 11 p.m., McKinney had regained her lead over Johnson with 47 percent of the votes to Johnson's 44.6 percent. It was not the type of lead McKinney and her supporters had planned for as they prepared during the day for a victory party at a Decatur hotel. McKinney's supporters said they expected that McKinney would be able to come out and claim outright victory by 11 p.m., but that was not the case. McKinney finally appeared about 12:40 a.m. Wednesday and gave a speech in which she appealed to the voters of the 4th District for their support. "You can't keep a good woman down!" she told members of the crowd, that included war protester Cindy Sheehan and Patricia Roberts, the mother of the first Georgia soldier killed in Iraq. "So this battle is engaged and we intend to win!" Johnson also predicted victory in the runoff. "People have decided that it's now time for change and so we look forward to duplicating our success tonight on August the 8th." The congresswoman voted during early polling last week so that she was able to sit back and monitor the situation during election day. Long-time supporter James Thomas said of McKinney from her campaign headquarters, "Awesome. Awesome. She is the 4th District people's choice. Always has been. Always will be." Voters in the predominantly Democratic 4th District ousted McKinney in the primary four years ago in favor of little-known political newcomer Denise Majette. McKinney returned to Congress in 2005 after Majette left the post to run for the Senate. Majette won the Democratic nomination for state Schools Superintendent Tuesday night. McKinney's opponents have been much more visible on the campaign trail. Both Johnson -- an attorney and former DeKalb County Commissioner -- and John Coyne, an architect, criticized McKinney for skipping two televised debates and other campaign-related appearances. Johnson also said McKinney has failed to bring home much-needed federal funds. "It means bringing in needed resources to the 4th Congressional district," Johnson said from his campaign headquarters Tuesday night. "Representatives are responsible for bringing home certain portions of federal money to their district and we're not getting our fair share." While McKinney kept a low profile after returning to Congress, a scuffle with a Capitol Hill police officer in March again thrust her into the national spotlight. Facing possible criminal charges, McKinney was forced to apologize on the floor of the House. A federal grand jury in Washington declined to indict her. The Democratic winner is expected to easily win re-election in November because the district is heavily Democratic. (The Associated Press contributed to this report). |

Mzuri, You know. As I look at that picture, I can't help wondering is the problem the hair itself or is the hair style a BAD match for her EYES. Because I kinda think if she had more subtle and alluring eyes, the Scary Spice look might have worked for her. But serious, I think McKinney's scandelous run-in with the Congressional security guards has had much better part in her electoral troubles than has her hair style. |

She's had several problems lately. Remember when she was in some presser and she left out of the room still wearing her microphone and she made incriminating/derogatory comments against one of her staffers? Then she was a no show at one of the political debates. That MIA episode, combined with her hair, her demeanor, the assault and everything else - I don't think she's getting re-elected. (But I could be wrong.) |

Would you think the woman would get on her job. She is NOT getting re-elected by doing this: Cynthia McKinney Missing In Action http://wsbradio.com/news/072106_mckinney.html Rep. Cynthia McKinney was a no-show this week in the U.S. House, as WSB Washington Correspondent Jamie Dupree reports that the Georgia Democrat missed all four days of legislative business and every vote on the House floor as well. McKinney's office offered no comment as to why the Congresswoman did not return to Washington after Tuesday's primary election, where she was forced into an August 8th runoff against Hank Johnson. Also left unanswered Thursday night was whether McKinney would be back at the U.S. Capitol next week. The House has one more week of work before a scheduled August break. McKinney missed 19 votes over four days on the House floor, including an attempted override of President Bush's veto of a bill dealing with embryonic stem cell research, a constitutional amendment that would ban same-sex marriage and a bill designed to prevent federal courts from ruling on the constitutionality of the words "under God" in the Pledge of Allegiance. The Georgia Democrat has missed nearly 11 percent of the 393 recorded votes in the U.S. House so far in 2006. According to the Congressional Record, McKinney did have official permission to miss votes on Monday and Tuesday of this week, what is known as a "Leave of Absence." There was no notice of any request being granted for Wednesday's session of the House. 07/21/2006

"Rep. Well, the record speaks for itself notwithstanding her uncomplimentary hair style. When she gets booted out of office, some knuckleheads will play the race card and advance a conspiracy theory of the white mans plot to get rid of McKinney. Don’t be surprised. |
