Oprah Says She, Friend Gayle King Not Gay

NEW YORK (AP) - Oprah Winfrey and her friend Gayle King want to be clear: they're not gay. In the August issue of O, the Oprah Magazine, the talk-show host explains that some people misunderstand her close friendship with King.
"I understand why people think we're gay," she says. "There isn't a definition in our culture for this kind of bond between women. So I get why people have to label it - how can you be this close without it being sexual?"
In a long article, Winfrey, 52, and King converse about their 30 years of friendship and "four-times-a-day phone calls." King, who hosted "The Gayle King Show" in 1997, is an editor of O, the Oprah Magazine.
The two friends say they would have no problem telling the public if they were in a sexual relationship.
"The truth is, if we were gay, we would tell you, because there's nothing wrong with being gay," says King.
Says Winfrey: "Something about this relationship feels otherworldly to me, like it was designed by a power and a hand greater than my own. Whatever this friendship is, it's been a very fun ride."

Very sad. Why should she have to explain anything? Her personal life is just that:” PERSONAL!" But unfortunately, when you are high profile, high public visibility or a celebrity, having a private life is forbidden. Nosey people with no lives of their own and the poparattzi will see to that. Personally, I could care less if she was gay or not. But then again, I don't concern myself with peoples personal lives and activities.

As to why she wouldn't admit it: Look what happened to Rosie O'Donnell and Ellen DeGeneres and Johnny Mathis--Oh they are working but they took a big hit in the pocket.
Ask Martina Navratilova about how she even now doesn't get any endorsements.
Right now Oprah is G rated. Gay is PG-13 at least if not X. Sorry folks. Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson have taken over and you let them.
Oprah would not be destitute, but the moneys would definitely take a hit--
And ooooh the next time she had a program about relationships they would throw it in her face.
Methinks they protesteth too much-and all this stuff about four a day phone calls and an otherworly relationship--haw! |

Chris - That four fonecons a day thing is a bit much. There ain't that much talking in the world. But I don't think that just because you have a close girlfriend - it means you're gay. I've had girlfriends over who spent the night (because we were too toasted to drive - has that ever happened to you) and I can promise you it wasn't nothing going on sexually. |

I think the constant glorification of and fawning over Gayle combined with Oprah never marrying or having kids (don't even TRY to cite that Stedman Graham conjob) makes one question Oprah's sexuality.
And, if I recall correctly, didn't Oprah essentially steal Gayle from her husband? That there's got dyke layered all over it. |

ABM - I don't judge a person by their song lyrics! Maybe I should start.
Oprah STOLE Gayle from her husband? I better keep up with current events because I had no idea. I know if I was married to someone who was on the phone FOUR TIMES A DAY with any other living person, that would not be acceptable to me. But not getting married doesn't mean you're gay - maybe Oprah just doesn't want Sted to get HALF.
And I'm not defending it either way, I just saw the story and thought that it was interesting reading. Oprah can give her (big fat billionaire) coochie to whomever she likes. LOL!!! |

Oprah didn't avoid marrying Stedman because he's queer (Hell. In spite of what she says, she might be the same.). Oprah pulled the plug on marrying Stedman because he was fool enuff to let it get out (about 10 years ago) that he was stickin' it to some Antoine Merriweather-type hairdresser here in Chicago. |

My memory is quite fuzzy, but I remember Gayle's husband not liking how Oprah was showering Gayle with lavish and expensive gifts that his income couldn't match--one being a very expensive car. |

I think there's a way to look out for one's friend WITHOUT pissing off her(or his) spouse. It seems to me that someone who respects her (or his) friends marriage might include the spouse as at least a indirect beneficiary of your largesse.
I'm not suggesting that Oprah didn't in fact do that. I really don't know. But I think Oprah's never having been married and never having to really be obligated to anyone other than herself might have been a factor amid what tore Gayle's marriage apart.
That and, hell...they could be lovers. |

Four phone calls a day? My best friend and I are business partners and sometimes we don't even talk four times per week! But if my best friend were to make me a millionaire, I'll listen to her ANY TIME she wants to talk! LOL! |
