Favorite Prince Album: "1999". Every single on it is a bonified hit. And most of them are classics. Favorite Prince Single: This is a tuff one. REAL TUFF. But I'd certainly include "Erotic City", "Little Red Corvette", "Let's Pretend We're Married", "Anotherloverholenyohead", "Do Me Baby" and "Adore" within my Top 10. Favorite Performances of a song written by Prince: Chaka Khan's "I Fee For You." Favorite Prince Chick: VANITY!!! Now. I do think Prince is the greatest popular music performer of this (and maybe ANY) generation. But Prince owes A WHOLE LOT to the Great SLY STONE. All you have to do is listen to some of Sly's music (most of it produced a generation PRIOR to the best of Prince) and you'll KNOW exactly what I mean. |

I love ALL of Prince's music but my favorite Prince oldies are: I Wanna Be Your Lover Dirty Mind Head Irresistible Bitch New Position Annie Christian International Lover And I can go on and on, but those are his earliest hits that are timeless and they all still sound brand new right now. Prince's original claim to fame (according to what the people who "discovered" him said) was that he could play several different musical instruments - piano, guitar, drums - and I don't know what else. Everything he has released throughout the years has been original, always fresh, mind-blowing - and I believe he'll go down in history as one of the greatest composer/musicians who ever lived. Sly Stone was one of my very first concerts. Way back in the day. Sly is multi-talented as well and I agree that Sly may have been an influence upon Prince. |

He's one great performer! How does he do it? Go from Door to door as one of Jehovah's Witnesses and have time to perform as well. I guess if George Benson and Larry Grahm can do it, why not Prince! You are the man PRINCE!!! |

Chris, Prince has OBVIOUSLY lifted from all those cats. And I might even add some Sammy Davis, Jr. to that mix you've presented. But I wouldn't say he's done a "half ass" job. I think he's done an admirable job lifting from those dudes. |

There's only so many ways you can play a guitar. PRINCE may have borrowed a couple of moves, but in the end - PRINCE is an original!!!

I might even add some Sammy Davis, Jr. to that mix you've presented Also add Carlos Santana. Likely others. Point is: How many folks could integrate (e.g., "rip off") just one of these great artists into their musical career? Yet Prince has been able to take from all of them--Plus add his own special spin. Now, instead of listing those he's cribbed from, list those artists who followed who wouldn't be where they are without their debt to him: Janet Jackson (via Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis) Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis Me'shell Ndege Ocello Andre from Outkast Alicia Keys D'Angelo Rashaan Patterson (spl?) ...

the fact that he as "lifted" and created his own sound is his genius, Mr. Chris Hayden. I love lots of his music...still will stand all time...the live performance...I love the Black Album! Does anyone have that one? Remember when we used to my dem love mix tapes...back in the day? Mine was full of Prince songs...adore and when 2 R in Love... |

Black Album YES! I had one of the original bootlegs. As for his live performances, if you do not have a copy of One Night Alone it is worth getting. It does not exactly capture perfectly the magic of actually being there, but to my mind it comes pretty close. |

I have about a dozen PRINCE LPs (CDs, cassettes) but I've been remiss and I haven't kept up. I order books from Amazon about once a month and I'm gonna start ordering a couple CDs whenever I order my books to bring my PRINCE collection up to date. Besides my undying love for MR. JOHNNY GUITAR WATSON, I think PRINCE is the GREATEST musician that ever walked on the water!

Mzuri, I don't know if I'd consider Prince to be the "GREATEST musician" ever. For that particular title, I think I'd have to give some serious consideration to Louis Armstrong, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Jimi Hendrix and Duke Ellington; just to name a few. But I think you could definitely consider him the most VERSATILE musician ever. |

I was thinking about you all this afternoon: Listening to a little jazz, trying to clear up my email in-box, when saxophonist Joshua Redman's version of "How Come U Don't Call Me Anymore" came on my cd shuffle. I love that cover! It's from his cd of covers "Timeless Tales (for Changing Times)" Check it out! |
