so i was talking to my mother today and she was complaining about the state of music while she was watching the b.e.t awards. she was going on about how back in her day they had marvin gaye, the temptations, curtis mayfield, jimmy from 7 mile, al green, and so on and so forth ... and then she was like "ya'll music is just bad ...this music lacks soul and substance" ... i said mom you better shut your mouth! *i didn't say that * i did tell her technically that any music that is coming out while she is alive is still her music too and if it's not then she can't attach todays music with me. otherwise boyz 2 men, jodeci, shai, h-town, new edition, xscape, swv would be considered my music (she did get my on the gangsta rap stuff i owned but that's neither here nor there) ... it would be nice to see another group sorta like boyz 2 men they where pretty good. i guess until then i'll listen to newer muisc every now and then and continue to listen to a bunch of talk radio ... sports radio sucks right now because i don't like baseball, thank god there's only a few more weeks until football, i know my girl is gonna' love that. ...oh i was supposed to be talking about music wasn't i? well i'm done, and by the way ... there's no such music group as jimmy from 7 mile road i totally made that up. |

I can relate but Mom didn't like the performances by Ne-Yo and Chris Brown? What about the Chaka Khan tribute and the Humanitarian award going to Harry Belafonte. And they had some gospel with Mary Mary and Yolanda Adams was there. I think the B.E.T. Awards show had a little something for everyone. As for the olden days - Moms can still listen to Curtis Mayfield and them - what's stopping her. |

We had plenty of stankass awful music back then too but we just forget that and remember the good stuff--she also forgets that her parents were complaining that marvin gaye and the temptations et al were junk (Marvin Gaye would have agreed) and they were compared with Billy Eckstine, Sarah Vaughn, Ella Fitzgerald et al. I can remember great debates with my Uncle about this who was a Be bopper and who hated everthing done after 1955-- Though I love Be Bop (at least the hard core kind--not that Bird With Strings shit) it is something to read the comments of swing and Dixieland musicians about Be bop. It is a generational thing. Everybody thinks their music was great and everybody else's was crap. |

To me, GOOD music is GOOD music, Doberman. I like all kind of music whether from the 1950s or the 2006s, not to mention the classics by the old masters. To confine your taste to just one genre or one era is to deny yourself the pleasure of what music is all about: artistry and creativity and uniqueness. BTW, I'd say "black man" was the most frequently used phrase on this site, closely followed by "COLORISM!" |

"Though I love Be Bop (at least the hard core kind--not that Bird With Strings shit) it is something...." Yeah, me too. When I was young, every summer I would have a month dedicated to the music of Charlie "Bird" Parker. Love those two superb Bud Powell Blue Note issues, the Clifford Browns with Max Roach, everything I could get by Tad Dameron, Fats Navarro, Dexter Gordon, Wardell Gray, Monk, Dizzy and Kenny "Klook" Clarke. My first introduction to Bird was that wonderful Prestige Twofer 26000 series that was reissued with Bird Live at St. Nicks! I'm surprised you don't like the string recordings. I love those also. I probably have at least 75 Bird records and CD's totaled. Still can't get enough!

"Laura" by Charlie Parker is so ethereal and its on the "Charlie Parker With Strings" album. Errol Garner's "Concert by the Sea" is another great album. Lester Young's "These Foolish Things" and "DB Blues" are jazz classics as is Coleman Hawkins' "Body And Soul" - all favorites of my mine from bygone eras.( But - I also like like "old" Prince and young Alicia Keyes and >blush< Nelly) |
