Fresno police are investigating the case of an 11-year-old runaway from a group home who they say was sexually assaulted this weekend by two men -- and possibly many more.

"Ten is the round number," Fresno police spokesman Jeff Cardinale said. "There may end up being more, and there may end up being less."

The two men arrested -- and six other men who voluntarily met with police Sunday about the incident -- are linked to two Fresno County community college football programs, according to police.

Officers arrested Mackey Davis, 20, and Eddie Scott, 19, at the apartment where the assault allegedly took place Saturday. Davis and Scott were booked on suspicion of molesting a child under 14 and oral copulation with a person under 18, Cardinale said. The two are likely to be arraigned today , police said.

Both men played football at one point for Reedley College, about 30 miles southeast of Fresno, and came to California from Florida, according to school district records. The Reedley College Web site list Scott as a 6-foot, 3-inch, 200-pound wide receiver on their 2005 roster.

Six either current or prospective Fresno City College football players voluntarily agreed to give statements to police on Sunday, police spokesman Jeff Cardinale said.

Most of the six live in the Villa Hermosa apartment complex where the assault allegedly occurred, police said. It was unclear, however, where "I don't think we can really label them as anything; they're not suspects, but they could develop into suspects," Cardinale said of the six.

Cardinale said the girl was assaulted after she ran away from a group home and went to the Villa Hermosa apartment complex on North Marks Avenue to see someone she knew.

Police learned of the assault when a female witness at the apartment complex called 911 as the assault was occurring, Cardinale said. He declined to identify the witness or elaborate on her involvement in the case.

At about the same time as the 911 call, the victim fled the apartment and found a couple nearby, who flagged down police, Cardinale said.

The girl was treated for minor injuries at a local hospital and turned over to Child Protective Services, Cardinale said.

"She's obviously dealing with a lot of emotional trauma," Cardinale said.

Detectives are also looking for another girl who ran away with the victim and who may have information about the case. Police do not believe the second girl, 15, was sexually assaulted.

Officials at both Fresno City College and Reedley College declined to comment or said they had little information about specifics in the case.

"Fresno City College and Reedley College are cooperating fully with the Fresno Police Department regarding this incident," a State Center Community College District statement read. "The colleges will assist the police department in any way possible as they continue their investigation."

Defense attorney Michael Idiart said he agreed, at the request of coach Tony Caviglia, to talk to the Fresno City College football players about going to the police. Idiart's son used to play for Caviglia.

"He felt it was his role as the coach or the potential coach of these people to let them know what their rights are and how the system works," Idiart said. "He also felt he had a moral obligation to cooperate with law enforcement."

Yvettep,

Obviously, this sound like an awful thing has occurred. To the extent that sex crimes have occurred, I hope that the perpetrators are punished to the fullest extent of the law and that the alleged victim is given all the help she needs to recover.

But I think (considering the recent Duke Rape fiascao) it's probably wise for most of us to reserve judgement until more REAL, IMPARTIAL and CREDIBLE facts about what has (and hasn't) occurred have been released.

I couldn't read the whole article, Yvette--can't take hearing anything bad happing to small children. But from the little bit I did read, they ain’t gettin no impartial no credible no SHIT from me. The only thing real they need is an asswhuppin’. They ought to thank goodness I’m not running the law and be satisfied with that. Because from what I read, it was enough for them to be judged, juried, hung and buried all within the same pistol whipping half hour.

"......it was enough for them to be judged, juried, hung and buried all within the same pistol whipping half hour."

Sounds good to me. I despise rapists and child molesters. There is no cure for this sickening pathological violent behavior other than a bullet through the head or imprisonment for life. Take your pick (hint: a bullet is cheaper).
