Abm got it. We usually get that 30% number but that is just the number of all black men who have at one time had some contact with the criminal justice system--on parole, probation, in court, imprisoned, etc. |

Chris, Yeah. But the problem less the number of Black men who are incarcerated at any point and time and MORE the overall number/percentage of Black men who have/will be marred by criminal records and prison sentences. |

Although, given our uniquely troublesome and vulnerable history and position in this country, even 6% of brothas being locked up hurts A LOT! |

but its really not 6 percent of "black men", because we only look at the black men in america. what about the west indian blacks, the blacks in central america, and in south america? it could be more or less who knows? when we on this board talk about "black men", who are we talking about? only the black men in america? what about the son of jamaican parents born in america? are west indian blacks or south american blacks included or excluded in our conversations? |

Chris (and ABM) "We usually get that 30% number but that is just the number of all black men who have at one time had some contact with the criminal justice system--on parole, probation, in court, imprisoned, etc." I'm almost certain that AT ANY GIVEN TIME 1 out of 4 black men are in prison, jail, on probation or parole. |

I keep hearing that stat, too. Plus, I think the #s usually only refer to adults: The number of Black male youth in youth lock-up, residential "treatment" centers, etc is more difficult to keep track of. But guess who is the fastest growing prison population... |

If there are 25 million or so black people in America and, say, half of them are male, then 6 percent of 12,500,000 is still a high number. The true test is to go to a prison and see how many inmates are black; the majority of them are. Black leaders like Jesse Jackson are the ones who complain about prisons becoming an industry with black men as their best customers. Whatever the percentage of incarcerated black males is, it's too high. |

Who says she isn't. Those boys are tainted for the rest of their lives; they’ll always be known for their love of cotton and the history that brought us such. They'll be branded as creeps and relegated to the likes of our most notorious rapist and Dixiecrat--Strom Thurman....And the trail hasn't even begun yet. I'd call that justice. If not justice, justice by another name: REVENGE! |

...You don't want any special treatment. Nor should your oppressors receive any...handle your business, or your struggle, as anyone else would in your circumstances. It wasn't going to be easy and YOU MAY BE SURPRISED WHAT YOU HAVE TO DO --MALCOM X. My mind isn't bad, Chris...it's not weak.

I wasn't aware of the 6% figure, but of course it makes sense. Tonya, it doesn't necessarily refute your 25% figure, but if all of these stats are true, then of the 30% who are incarcerated only 5% get out of the system. |
