OK, I am now certain that I will be writing for one or all of the Columbia/Sony Pictures soap operas (Days of Our Lives, Young and the Restless and Bold and the Beautiful). It will be several weeks (mid-May), however, before I am given an official title and told exactly what I'll be doing and on which show. I start in Mid-May and my work will first appear on t.v. in July. I will have a Show and Working Position in Mid-Way. I'm being tutored right now how to do Breakdowns, which is what the Associate Head Writer does with the Head Writer's 6 month Story Bible. It's very complicated, all the work that goes into creating these simple looking soap operas. I believe that I will be either an Associate Head Writer (Breakdown Writer), a Story Consultant or a Script Writer. SELLING OUT The amount of money they pay is mind-blowing as the Head Writer usually makes $300,000 a year and the entry level Script Writer makes about $6,000 a month (that's $2,000 a script). So you can understand why I'm ignoring those people who say I'm selling out. My thing...is that I want to make movies about black women. So it's good to be employed as a writer by a Major Studio (Columbia/Sony) as it could make it easier for me to get financing for my independent films and also make other connections. People seem to really be charmed by my vulnerability, intelligence and passion---and I can eventually do more for Black women with Films (Visual Images) than I ever could with books. This is an image-based society. Kola

Clarification: The "script writers" on shows are usually only allowed to write one episode a week with one week off. Entry level gets $2,000 per script. The Associate Head Writer writes the 5 day breakdown and each script writer is assigned a day of the week to write the show. Pray that I get the Associate Head Writer position and not just script writer---although, I'd take either one happily. I'm very ambitious and the head guy at Columbia/Sony daytime really loves me so far, and he understands why it's so important that I make it.

Kola, it sounds like an inroad to what you want to do. Do you know what happened to the woman who filmed Daughters of the Dust? Wonder where she started. Congratulations and I wish you much success in your goals. |

Congratulations! I hope you get to write for the show that you really want to write for, but I also kind of hope it's Days of Our Lives since I like that show and would like to get interested in a story line you've written. |

Thanks ALLLL. Renata---"Days" is actually where I'm trying to be placed, as it's the lowest rated. I've actually been watching it every day and they have me writing a full breakdown of that show every day--as I practice writing breakdowns. My trainer is S.P. Gosling, who used to write "Guiding Light" and "Search for Tomorrow". I've watched "Days of Our Lives" all my life--so I really know the show. Many are saying that I'm a sell-out or that soap writing is beneath me.....but I really want to get work in television/film as I feel that it's important for me to make the kinds of black women films I'm envisioning. I don't feel that my books alone are creating the kind of social awareness that we as black women so desperately need. Visual Images are far more powerful and I believe that I can transfer the passion and anger of my writing to filmed images. My goal is to get the t.v. movie "Volcano Woman" made. The bigger my name becomes--the easier it will be for me to get BANK FINANCING. I only need 2 to 3 million dollars to make a really great indie film. If I walk in with Check Stubs that say Columbia/Sony Pictures along with my credentials as a Novelist/Public Figure---it's easier to be taken seriously. Julie Dash, who made "Daughters of the Dust" is one of my idols and I honor her in my autobiography. I just pray that I'm able to make many more films than she did. I see Raoul Peck as my role model. As well---I love soap operas and the money is outrageously good. This will be the first time in my life that I'm independent of Thomas. And I get to stay home and do it!!!!!!! ANNNNNND...if I ever make it to "Head Writer" on a soap, then I get to hire my own script writers, so I imagine being able to get jobs for friends. I'm praying that I get an Associate Head Writer's Position, but I might have to start as Script Writer. My novel "Sexy Part of the Bible" comes out next year at this time.

There are so many nuances in my "Volcano Woman" t.v. movie and I feel so strongly that little black girls need a black woman superhero. There's an African King and Queen (Volcano Woman's parents) in the movie and a scene where VW is brought back to life by a circle of black goddesses---there's a little black boy sidekick that VW cares for/hides her identity from and her boyfriend is "LION MAN". In the story, VW is a nerdy glass-wearing school marm who no one would ever suspect is this powerfully athletic woman. This t.v. movie would be entertaining, funny and have very positive messages for black children. Best of all...I LOOOOOVE the "rap" theme for Volcano Woman. It's bang'n!! I want to make far more serious films for the art houses---but this t.v. movie, I believe, is very essential for black children, especially girls. Of course, because the project is Culturally Specific--there's a lot of resistance to the idea. |

Kola, HIP! HIP HURRAY!!! Congratulations, girl! I so very happy for and proud of you for scoring a chance to do something you have wanted so very much to do with your talents. If the producers of Days have any sense, they'll allow you to use your great narrative powers to quicken their flagging production. I'll most definitely cue my TiVo to tape the July 2006 airings of Days of Our Lives.

Thanks ABM!! Chris Hayden, I'm running the interview of you in PROOF soon. Thanks for the support. Hi TONYA!!! Hi Renata!! Moonsigns, thank you for being gracious. Libra and Zuri bless you!! Cynique, you're right. I need financing for my revolution---not to mention my therapist feels I need to take a break from my own kind of writing and focus on some other world. This will also stand as a historical marker that I was not a separatist or racist. And that I was a flexible writer, capable of doing mainstream white bread works, not just an angry activist. ALSO--it will help me to de-stress. Please pray for me, though, because I would like to have a SAY in the storylines--not simply write what I'm told. I really could be Head Writer if they'd think about it.

Kola, you aren't a sellout until you disgrace black people for money. If you take the job and then you make black women look like whores and black men look like baffoons, then you can where your sellout label proudly. If you take the opportunity to write Black characters that are flawed yet complex, who are multi-dimensional and emotionally autonomous and mature, and you get paid for it in the process, then you are a master of your own destiny and a facilitator for social change. |
