What do you think? Note: This appears to be a European, not US, ad campaign (so far). More pics at link: http://joystiq.com/2006/07/04/ad-critic-sonys-racially-charged-psp-ad/

I think this advertisement is offensive because they used people to say that the white psp is superior to the black psp, which in turn is saying that whites are superior to blacks. The problem lies when they used Humans instead of something else to advertise the PSP. I looked at the other photos and I just say this advertisement is unnecessary. They need to redo this advertisement. I wouldn't buy it for me or my kids after seeing this commercial. |

Sony is a Japanese corporate giant. This insensitive ad shouldn't come as a shock to anyone. The Japanese make no secret of holding blacks in low esteem. |

Racist because? It depicts a Black person being dominated by a white person? Maybe the images are not politically correct but I don't think they're racist. I also don't think that we should focus our attention on every little thing that we think might be wrong, get wrapped around the axel about it and waste our time and energy. Aren't there other more important concerns besides Sony's ad campaigns??? If you don't like the ads, then don't buy the products - it's really not that complicated. |

If you don't like the ads, then don't buy the products - it's really not that complicated. Interesting point. I think you're right. Too much time is focused and spent on petty PC perceptions. Focus on real problems (e.g. academic failure of so many young blacks, AIDS and awareness, ongoing black on black violence and crime, what can be done to stem the tide of black incarcerations, the impact of degrading and negative images/lyrics on young blacks, etc, etc...). But that is wishful thinking on my part. Obsessing over another black persons skin color is more compelling and important since people can't seem to have a discussion without bringing it up. So, categorizing and ranking people according to their skin complexion and doling out "authenticity points" must be more critical and urgent. |

I don't know what I find more BORING: A) The ubiquitous lamentations about racism. or B) The ubiquitous lamentations of the lamentations about racism. |

”I don't know what I find more BORING: A) The ubiquitous lamentations about racism. or B) The ubiquitous lamentations of the lamentations about racism. To be honest, I actually agree with you. I have become somewhat bored doing so. But my revulsion and disgust at the compulsive obsession by some readers to make counterproductive divisive inane and senseless rants about light skin vs. dark skin, overrides my boredom. I suggest if you find such threads to be so tedious, you can always skip over or not read them. That’s always an opinion, ya know.

I think the White woman looks very sexy in these ads. Though I think it's the Black woman and the Black background that embellishes her look. |

Follow-up here: http://blogher.org/node/7396: SACRAMENTO – A week after Assembly Speaker pro Tem Leland Yee (D-San Francisco/Daly City), the NAACP, and Sojourn to the Past – a youth civil rights education project, condemned Sony Corporation for a racially charged advertisement in the Netherlands, Sony has pulled the billboard campaign and apologized to those offended. Today, Yee and other civil rights leaders commended Sony for their latest action. Sony said in a statement issued by Nick Sharples, Director of Corporate Communications in Europe: “We further recognize that people have a wide variety of perceptions about such imagery and we wish to apologize to those who perceived the advert differently to that intended. In future, we will apply greater sensitivity in our selection of campaign imagery, and will take due account of the increasingly global reach of such local adverts, and their potential impact in other countries.” “I am pleased to see Sony taking responsibility for their racially-charged ad and appropriately pulling it from the marketplace,” said Yee. “Sony did the right thing by recognizing their insensitive mistake and apologizing for offending many of their customers.” The ad, promoting the release of Sony’s new white-cased portable video game system (PSP), depicted a white woman angrily grabbing a black woman in the face with the text “Playstation Portable. White is coming.” “Sony has done the honorable thing by owning up to the fact that communication and ads in today’s global market have a much further reach than in the past,” said Rick Callender, President of San Jose/Silicon Valley NAACP. “Their attempt to contrast colors clearly created controversy and sparked painful feelings in the global community. Hopefully in the future, Sony will employ a better litmus test to their ad campaigns to determine if they will be sour to the taste of worldwide consumers. I commend them for their actions.” “Working with young people, Sojourn to the Past teaches many lessons of the Civil Rights Movement including the capacity to change and forgiveness,” said Jeff Steinberg, Sojourn to the Past’s Executive Director. “By ending this ad campaign, Sony deserves credit for righting their wrong. We urge all corporations to no longer use such derogatory and racially-charged images to sell their products. These tactics only serve to divide us”...
