Beauty Images Do Affect Black Women
Images of 'Ideal' Black Women Can Shatter Body Image

Black women may be more affected by the portrayal of beauty in the media than previously thought. A new study shows that while black women may shrug off beautiful images of white women, seeing "ideal" images of other black women may deal a serious blow to their body image.
The study, which appeared in the March 2004 issue of the Journal of Black Studies, takes an in-depth look at how idealized images in the media affect Black women's body image.
Researchers divided their research into two studies. Since white models dominate health and beauty ads in America, researchers first examined how those images affect black women's self-esteem.
Forty-eight black women, ages 18 to 22, participated in the study. They answered questions relating to body image, and about what their mood was before (and again after) the study. Researchers also asked volunteers to read and evaluate five articles for an upcoming popular women's magazine and critique 18 advertisements typically seen in mainstream media.
The second study showed 110 black, female college students ads with beautiful black women and beautiful white women. Researchers compared the women's body esteem before and after the study.
The Big Myth -- Dismissed
Two big findings surfaced. The first study showed that most of the volunteers didn't identify with the "idealized" beauty of the white models.
And the second showed that while black women do not judge their self-worth on beautiful images of white women in ads, seeing images of black models made those who were dissatisfied with their bodies even more so -- dismissing the idea that black women are not affected by thin images of any beautiful women in media.
"My research shows that in the midst of exposure to images of 'idealized' Caucasian women, black women are not affected by ideals of thin bodies," researcher Cynthia Frisby, assistant professor of journalism at University of Missouri-Columbia, tells WebMD.
"However, perhaps when the image or model hits closer to home and meets us where [black women] are most insecure, that image impacts our self-esteem, or at least affects low self-esteem women. So the major point is, race matters. The ethnicity of the model makes a difference."
Previous research shows that images of stereotypically thin, attractive women can cause white women to practice unhealthy behaviors and become extremely unhappy with the way they look. On the other hand, black women are supposedly less concerned with weight; however, this study shows this may not be completely true.
Frisby says more research should be done on the topic. "Studies such as these should be undertaken in order to help advertisers develop and create effective and accountable advertising messages as well as advance the field of mass communication by providing theoretical insights and explanations for issues related to the media and racial and ethnic concerns." |

Everybody wants to be a star. Every female wants to catch the eye of males. What should be emphasized is that looks are superficial and are the bait. If after you attract a man, you don't have what it takes to hold a his interest, you might as well be fat and ugly. (Do the names Halle Berry and Jennifer Aniston strike a note?) |

I dont see why they refer to "thin" as a caucasian thing.
black women aren't fatter than other races by nature so it's not a caucasian thing. black AMERICAN women may be more liekly to be overweight than white women but there was one study i read that showed africans straight from africa have the lowest rate of obesity and overweightness in this country. The only thing i can see them claiming black women are naturally thicker than white women on is in the butt and thigh area.
Plus, i think this study should take into acocunt the fact that most black models are "thicker" than most white models. Look at tyra banks, and most of the black models that model for essence and ebony. Those women actually have hips, thighs and asses. I truely don't know of ANY boney black models but there are boney, super thin white models. And as skiny as naomi campbell is, she's still not as boney as some of the other models i've seen.
So i dont think this study is accurate enough. Of course black women may want to be thin but it doesnt mean we want to have boney asses and thighs in the same way i see white women obsess over wanting small asses and thighs.
Most black women see beyonce's body as ideal while most white women may see heidi klum's or lindsey lohan's body as ideal. Both women are thin, but beyonce jsut happens to have more curves. |

The truth is that BW are fatter than women of other races. Studies show that 1 and 4 BW are overweight and 1 and 3 of them are morbidly obese.
BW are the least the likely of other races of women to diet and exercise. The studies are grim. The problem is the lack of information the BW have about health and their own bodies.
Another study was shown said that Hispanic children are more likely to be obese than Black and White children. |

i know what the studies say serenasailor but i was ponting out that we're not born to be overweight and that we're not fatter than others by nature. Many believe that it's easier for black women to pick up weight than white women and that being what america labels "overweight" is jsut black womens natural body type but i was pointing out that this is untrue. I know it's untrue because africans straight from africa have a lower rate of obesity and overweightness than whites....so this is jsut a black american thing. |

How Affected are black American men by the fact that they've been sexualized by white men for more than four hundred years, without putting up any real meaningful resistance - one contemplates....
Racism and sexism have been thought to be one in the same.
White men have made black men subservient to them..similar to how criminals handle their prey behind bars.
And after awhile..the passive male prisoner comes to expect it---and then ultimately he begins to enjoy it.

Unfortunately, this is very true. Even without empirical and well researched medical documentation, the causal observer will notice this.

This is also true. I mentioned this before on the board, much to the consternation and innocuous misguided rebuttals by a few readers. The comment;”BW are the least the likely of other races of women to diet and exercise”, is one of fact, not a personal opinion, conjecture or speculation. It is a very unfortunate well documented fact.

It is interesting you said that. I read the exact same thing about a three months ago. In fact, I believe it is Hispanic male children who are more likely than in other group to have the worst instances of being overweight.
• Since the 1980s, there has been a steady increase in the proportion of children who are overweight. In 1976–1980, only 6 percent of children ages 6–18 were overweight. By 1988–1994, this proportion had risen to 11 percent, and it continued to climb to 16 percent by 1999–2002.
• Data from 1999–2002 indicate that substantial racial and ethnic disparities exist such that larger percentages of Black-alone, non-Hispanic, and Mexican American children are overweight, compared with White-alone, non-Hispanic children.
• Black-alone, non-Hispanic female children and Mexican American male children are at particularly high risk of being overweight. In 1999–2002, 23 percent of Black-alone, non-Hispanic female children and 27 percent of Mexican American male children were overweight.
• Among adolescent males ages 12–18, virtually no differences existed between ethnic groups in 1988–1994. By 1999–2002, there were large ethnic differences: 15 percent of White-alone, non-Hispanic, 20 percent of Black-alone, non-Hispanic, and 27 percent of Mexican American males were overweight.

Though I didn't watch the awards, I know it's been reported that she has lost about 20 pounds. Which makes her very thin especially for her particular build. I think many young women look up to her and want to be as attractive as she is. So I think it's a very real possiblity that her appearance could influence young, black teenage girls to seek drastic measures to meet this "thin" (and beautiful) ideal.

I highly doubt it. There are young obese girls out there who will try to mimic Beyonce by getting the weave, dressing skanky and shaking their behinds. They will do all of that before they even think about going on an Atkins' diet. |
