I’ve been watching comments and statements made on this board for some time now. Although I don’t have as many post as some of the more senior members, I have been noting something over the past couple of years that dates back as far as the reign of Kola Boof on this board. And it’s this seemingly obsession to comment, whether it be in passing or as denigrating dig, to focus on skin color. Dark versus light –light complexioned versus dark complexioned. WHY? Why is necessary to make these innocuous and sometimes strident comments about the skin color of someone?
I would love for someone to explain this disturbing and divisive behavior. Please don’t give the light vs. dark slave psychological history synopsis. I’m well aware of it. I’m also aware that everyone who reads or posts on this board is not a slave and is free to think and indulge in any lifestyle or thinking they choose to. Again, why the need to establish an ordinal ranking or authenticity rating based on skin color? Where am I going wrong?

I can't speak for what everyone else thinks, but I think in part (from what I've personally seen) it stems from being chosen (or not chosen) as a mate or girlfriend/boyfriend by others in your same race based only on skin color. |

It unsettles me to see black people focus on petty divisive issues which only serve to establish antagonisms and un-necessary intra group conflicts. It’s bad enough black people suffer a multitude of compelling problems and issues without being pitted against each other because someone’s skin (something no has any control over –it’s not a personal decision…..unless you are Michael Jackson) color is lighter or darker than anothers. Where is the intelligence in that?
Colorism, with all the pathologies that go along with it, is counterproductive to the unity of the group. It amazes me how many people dwell and obsess over it. Why is it important if another black person is lighter or darker than you? Why would someone care? WHY SHOULD SOMEONE CARE? I don’t.
But this self destructive group behavior is something you obviously seem enjoy or are sadly oblivious to. Take your pick. Otherwise you would not have asked such a fatuous question.

What I notice is that people with dark brown skin to blacker care very much about the issue of colorism, because they actually experience it, especially females.
While lighter skinned people (ie. Ntfs) spend a great deal of time either trying to deny that it exists...or like whites...they are annoyed by it and refuse to acknowledge the depth and power of the problem--it's not a major factor in their lives and they BENEFIT from it, so they don't want it challenged. Therefore, it causes an even worse rift.
Ntfs...Black Americans did not come from West Africa already bastardized "dark skinned" and "light skinned" or in 32 shades. West Africans are a UNIFORM coloring, despite variation, almost 98% of them being Dark Brown to Definite Brown to Pure Black.
The genetic breakdown of "African blood" itself to cater to White Supremacy is what's divisive. Not the issue of colorism.
If you all looked like your Black ancestors---then you wouldn't be divided.
Notice that WHITE people are WHITE (they have to be) and they are not divided--because they have a 1 drop rule to keep any chance of division...OUT.
But then they're so much smarter than you are.
And of course people can tell that Mzuri and Ntfs are "high yellow" bastard stock--because everything you post about race and color SCREAMS it.
A HUGE part of the problem is that mixed "yellow" people in the United States don't want to acknowledge that they are an EXTRACTION of Black People...and are not Black themselves.
But the day is soon coming when that distinction will be a new revolution in this country.

The French divided the people up into two groups. People with more white blood (thinner noses, flat behinds?) worked indoors. The rest were banished to field work. Classic divide and conquer. It's probably in a text book somewhere.
A lot of us are carrying our parent's baggage (the just plain wierd advantages of rape and miscigenation). The only kind of revolution we need has already started.
Employment: If your personnel file says you're black, it's your performance and not your shade that determines your fate (as a black person-cuz that hasn't changed).
Dating: I've seen so many beautiful, slender 'black' women everywhere getting the guys! I think if a women is suffering with men because of her color; it is because she's an uneven mottly brown and needs to get some sun, or because she herself is insecure because of mistreatment by silly children who were practicing carrying their parent's baggage.
Yes some brothers like light skinned or white women, so what. Dazzle them with your beauty and confidence, then dump 'em - who needs 'em.
I know the old folks 'ooh' and 'ah' over the mixed race babies. Hopefully that will end with their generation, but what is it doing to the rest of their grandbabies right now?? More baggage? It seems the darker a person is (in their family) the more likely they are to date or marry someone white (or damn near white). |

Oh gosh. Somebody yelled "color" and Kola jumped out. And of course she has proceeded to contemptuously spout what she considers irrefutable arguments about the issue of color, replete with threats and prophecies of doom. yawn. IMO, the question posed in this post could spawn a thousand responses. Which is to say that there is no definitive answer to the question of color. There is nothing cut and dried in this world; it is in a constant state of flux. A person's color is as unique to them as is their fingerprint, and their opinion of their own color in relation to the color of others is a personal thing. Who is to say what is correct and what is false? It's all subjective. When we look around we see that not all dark-skinned people are down and out and not all light-skinned people are getting over. As Oprah, the end-all be-all guru preaches, we can each lead our best life if we aligne ourselves with our best self. Attitude has a great deal to do with how a person maneuvers his or her way through life. Color is what you make of it. |

Unfortunately, this or (other) identifiable groups feel that they are left with no choice but to press the issue of colorism, but the effort appears to be a waste of time. As so-called (black) births continue to diverge and rapidly spread across the color line, these groups may have to step back and re-assess whether or not the effort to be (accepted) is worthwhile. Futility is what many others observe in that engagement of frustration and hostility.
Case in point, darker-skinned women appear to be slighted much (much) more by darker-skinned men than by any other male demographic. As I frequently see, two days ago (at a local weekly music festival with a predominantly white audience (i.e., 95%+ white)), I noticed a (dark-skinned) (brother) carrying a very light(er)-skinned baby in a front facing pouch on his chest. He was followed by two lighter-skinned (black) women, one of whom was the baby's mother. The guy proceeded to (march) around the entire festival as if to say or announce to everyone, "look at my kid!". Would he have done the same if the baby and the women he was with were his complexion (regardless of his overall phenotype)?
In the end, dark(er)-skinned (blacks) put (ONE) over on themselves all the time. Point the finger at yourselves before pointing it at others. An ongoing subject of debate? Maybe. And don't forget, many easily identifiable blacks spend a whole lot of time trying to be non-(black) in virtually every sense of the word. |

it's not about what "white people" see, it's what I see when i look at my kinfolk. as long as my blood relatives range from jet black to brown to yellow to high yella, NO ONE is going to define for me (and most of the black folks i know) what "black" is or suggest that one of my cousins is "less black" than the other, because one has light brown skin and the other chocolate or one relative has grey eyes and the other dark brown. |

WHAT I MEAN:
As we have more Bi-racial and mixed people, they will not want to be called "Black"---which they shouldn't. A great many of them already want to have an ACCURATE identity that is not burdened by identifying with only ONE of their blood ties--which is natural for them to want to be WHOLE.
As this happens, the "true blacks" will be forced to stand up and represent themselves----and now removed from SLAVERY and the 1 drop rule and exposed to more Africans---will begin to REDEFINE who they are based on the accuracy of their phenotype and will take a new pride in their blackness...a pride that will be "LEGITIMATE" and not all "talk" with Mulatto leaders presiding over them.
There will come a day in America when true blacks will have their own communities and will see a "true black woman"--not a mulatto--as their representative face, because hers is their true PRE-Slavery, PRE-Colonial reflection.
Only through the true black woman can the black man or the black race ever rise.

What a weak scenario.
..whenever you see a black male with a darkskin baby he usually has the child hid and tucked away? are you used to Black males doing this?
And since this baby just so happen to be light it somehow proves that he was proud of that? he couldn't just be a proud papa huh?
You seem to only observe negative situations regarding dark complected people...i.e. the "Black America is getting heavier" thread..

BB - I got your point but I hope you're aware that Black babies aren't usually born dark-dark. They are born lighter and they turn darker as they age. So that little baby might stay light, and it might get darker. |

I do realize that. Although, I've seen plenty of Black babies born brown or chocolate (I was chocolate, while my older sister was very light at birth) who get the same special treatment from their proud fathers.
Every mother or father wants to show their children off--biracial/light/tanned/black or whatever.

I completely agree with NELS.
There is a cab driver in Nigeria (Lagos) who put up a billboard of his biracial son with a White prostitute on top of his cab--both sides and drives all over Lagos each day telling people, "That's my son!"
I wrote about him in my autobiography and I've seen this behavior ALL MY LIFE in the United States---dark children may be loved by their parents, but they aren't Paraded and used as Human Trophies the way light skinned children (especially with "non-African" hair) are.
Just look at any TV COMMERCIAL and most of the black children in them nowadays are "biracial"---you will almost NEVER see a pure black female child---the children are NEUTRAL looking, despite the fact that MOST black children...are noticably toast to dark brown colored.
Here in California...all you see are young dark brown Black Men who can't wait to show off their White or Latino baby. And these children actually don't look mixed AT ALL.
It's a status symbol for niggers.
Anybody remember all the little "yellow girls" with "good hair" being moved up to sit at the front of the church????

OH...and for the first time in like 8 years, my "waist" actually looks like this photo again, too!!!!!
It's these tits that need a lift---but I don't want the scars--and there's no way to lift them without very deep scarring.
