MIAMI, Florida (CNN) -- Seven people are in custody after a sweep by law enforcement authorities in connection with an alleged plot against targets that may have included the Sears Tower, officials told CNN. Officials said no weapons or bomb-making materials had been found in the searches in the Miami area by FBI and state and local law enforcement officials. The city is under no imminent threat, according to the FBI. Law enforcement sources told CNN that the arrests disrupted what may have been the early stages of a domestic terrorist plot to attack the Sears Tower in Chicago, Illinois, the FBI building in Miami, and possibly other targets. (Watch details of the raids -- 2:53) The 110-story Sears Tower is the world's third-tallest building and the tallest in North America. Barbara Carley, managing director of the Sears Tower, said in a statement that "it would be inappropriate for us to confirm or deny details of news reports about federal law enforcement action before an official statement from the Justice Department. "However, Sears Tower security officials regularly speak with the FBI and local law enforcement authorities who track and investigate terrorism threats. Today was no exception," she said. "Despite new information, law enforcement continues to tell us that they have never found evidence of a credible terrorism threat against Sears Tower that has gone beyond criminal discussions." Law enforcement sources told CNN that some of the suspects are members of a radical Muslim group and that at least one had taken "an al Qaeda oath." They had carried out surveillance on the Sears Tower and FBI building in Miami, the sources said. Federal law enforcement sources said five of the seven men were Americans, one was an illegal immigrant from Haiti whose visa had expired and the seventh was a resident alien. Sources told CNN that the arrests culminated a monthslong undercover operation. The suspects believed they were dealing with an al Qaeda operative but the person was actually a government informant, the sources said. Documents related to the investigation have been sealed. One of the arrests was made before Thursday, officials said, and one of Thursday's arrests took place in Atlanta, Georgia. A spokeswoman for Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Alvarez said the mayor was notified of the raid earlier in the day, and a spokesman for Florida Gov. Jeb Bush said the governor had been notified Thursday morning. Both Alvarez and Bush said they had no plans to tighten security. "If anything, this is a plot foiled," Alvarez spokeswoman Vicki Mallette said. Plans for a massive rally Friday in the city for the Miami Heat, the new National Basketball Association champions, are unchanged, she said, adding that 200,000 people were expected to attend. The FBI said one search warrant was executed in a warehouse near a housing project in Liberty City, a predominantly black and low-income area of Miami. Cedric Thomas, a co-owner of Thomas Produce Market, told the Miami Herald that the area around his store was teeming with federal agents. ''There is a ton of guys in uniforms moving around, blocking the streets. I'm not sure what they are doing,'' Thomas told the newspaper. Neighbors told CNN the men, who wore turbans, caused no problems but acted oddly. "All you could do was just see their eyes. They had their whole head wrapped up. Just the eyes showing. And they were standing guard -- one here, one there -- like soldiers. Very quiet," one woman said. A man said the men never spoke to neighbors and would just nod their heads if spoken to. "They was acting like they was in military training," he said. Residents living near the warehouse told The Associated Press that the men taken into custody called themselves Muslims and had tried to recruit young people. The men slept in the warehouse, Tashawn Rose, 29, told the AP. "They would come out late at night and exercise," she said. "It seemed like a military boot camp that they were working on there. They would come out and stand guard." The residents told the AP that FBI agents spent several hours seeking information from people in the neighborhood. They said the suspects, who appeared to be in their teens or 20s, had lived in the area for about a year, the AP reported. "We are conducting a number of arrests and searches, and we'll have more about that when the operation is completed, probably tomorrow morning," FBI Director Robert Mueller told CNN's Larry King in an interview broadcast Thursday night. "Because it's an ongoing operation, we really can't get into details," Mueller said. "But whenever we undertake an operation like this, we would not do it without the approval of a judge. We've got search warrants and arrest warrants and the like." In a statement, the U.S. attorney's office in Miami said federal, state and local agencies made the arrests in connection with a domestic "terrorist-related matter." Attorney General Alberto Gonzales will hold a news conference Friday regarding the raids.

Actually, I think it was seven of them. However, this is my opinion of the situation. It is about time that Black America start using the same tactics that White America uses to keep there supremacy. Only we are not fighting for supremacy we are fighting for our freedom. The right to live as human beings which the US(White America) has denied us. Granted, I don't believe in blowing up buildings and killing innocent black ppl. But when violence is used against you in everyday situations for no other reason than the color of your skin, then you must use violence to protect yourself. It is almost like the saying that Malcolm X used " By any means neccessary" must we gain our freedom. The only language that White America knows is violence. That is the only tactic they used in dealing with us. So "When in Rome Do as the Romans". If all your enemy knows is violence then you must speak his language. I feel that it is about time that the Black Man starts fighting back. Now if you murder, rape, beat, and enslave my wife and child what am I suppose to do? Should I just "turn the other cheek", peacefully demonstrate, sign some petition and hope that the corrupt(White Supremacist) government is supposed to take action? Or do I speak your language and use the same violence against you? I don't think that there is a man in this room who will sit back and let his wife and child be raped and murdered and will sit on his hands. Obviously, it seems that the only language that the White Man knows is violence. What do you think? |

Them brothers were set up. They used to do it all the time in the 60's. Bunch of brothers would be around, talking bad about the man. GEtting mad. Some cop or criminal who needs a break--I think they would call them agent provacateurs--would slide up next to them, get them to do something beyond talking (all you got to do is conspire) and then bust the lot of them. Be very careful who you are talking to. There are spies everywhere. Welcome to the American Dream. It came true. |

Oh. And let's not forget that we have Congressional elections coming up in November. We KNOW the GOP has no problem with using terrorist scare tactics to score votes. |

There's nothing more romantic and exciting than the idea of becoming a terrorist who will bring down tall buildings and shake the pillars of the most powerful country in the world. Somebody should have reminded these do-dos that having good sense is involved in carrying out this coup. Good sense as in not making yourself visible, and not being wary of "Greeks bearing gifts". "Greeks" as in FBI counterspies offering the gifts of assistance. |

Cynique, Good thing these guys DIDN'T to closely study their more clandestine 911 brethren. Because if they had, there goes the Sears Tower. |

Yes, please lord; Civil war is not the answer. I'm not trying to be in a police state. We have enough problems already. |

Femrenoir: It is already a police state. It is just a kinder, gentler police state where the police say "Have a nice day" and wear smiley buttons. We got everything the Nazis had but the military parades and the guy with the mustache. Abm: It will all come to light most likely after the brothers get done doing about 20 years like Geronimo Pratt. Get a fair trial? In Florida? Jeb Bush's state? |

Chris, I hope some hifalutin' defense attorney make them his(her) pet project. Maybe they'd then have a slightly above an icicle's chance in hell to get a fair trial. Maybe... |

I think the whole so-called arrest was a sham. Those guys were low level neighborhood thugs that were about as much a treat to national security as psyche patient who claims to be God. When I first heard this report on FOX channel news (the unabashed propaganda and cheer leading channel for conservatives and the White House Administration) they lead viewers to believe the FBI had captured a dangerous terrorist cell that was hours away from attacking major buildings and killing untold numbers of Americans. They went on and on and on about what a significant bust this was and how Bush’s counter terrorism efforts were working and the liberal media needs to back off questioning his effective methods for keeping us safe. But as this hyperbolized story unfolded and details began to emerge, it became very clear that this was not quite true. In reality, the suspects were “talking” about blowing things up. There was no C4 explosives, chemicals, detonators, timers, bomb making materials and manuals, guns, weapons of any sort, laptops or computers with links and e-mails to Al Qaeda, names of other terrorists, surveillance planning videos or any other documentation that would incriminate them. What was their offense: They were “talking” about doing something. That same evening, the grand Pooh-Baa of spin and the rabid defender of Bush’s war on terror, Bill O’Reilly, conceded these guys were no more than insignificant punks who were talking trash. He stated he did not feel sorry for them, but this particular case was definitely an overkill and the young black men arrested probably posed no real threat to anyone or anything. Again, their crime was “talking”. No physical evidence or ties to any tangible terrorist groups or sympathizers was discovered. As someone stated, I hope they get good legal representation also. They will need it. I think the governments case against them is weak and the threat of these Negroes is exaggerated. But is doesn’t matter. The arrest of these young men will venerate Bush’s image as a Bat Man caricature who fights against domestic terrorism. Bush has been extremely successful at keeping this country in a constant paralysis of fear and paranoia with psychological warfare (which lead him to two –although questionable, reelections). The most damning evidence they have is the leader of Knuckle Head Inc. agreeing to blow up some buildings (e.g. the John Hancock building in Chicago) to an undercover FBI agent on tape. Out side of that, nothing. I don’t exactly feel sorry for them, but I feel their punishment and incarceration sentencing will be unfair and unnecessarily excessive.
