Happy Juneteenth, everyone! I have noticed this year that there are many good on-line resources, and celebrations are getting a lot of publicity in mainstream presses.
However, I must admit that I have always been somewhat lukewarm about this "holiday." As some of you know, I am a staunch supporter of Black History Month--as well as celebrating African and African American history and culture 365 days a year. But there has always seemed to me something a little off about celebrating the history behind this observance.
I am not sure exactly what my problems are...What do you think?
At any rate, if there are any celebrations in your hometown, I'd love to hear about them. And a happy early Fathers' Day to all you Dads and Dads-to-be out there! |

Observation of this holiday seems to be much more widespread in the south than in the north. I know a people who have no idea what Juneteenth is all about. |

Juneteenth is a pretty big deal around here.But, I live about 45 miles from Galveston, so that should come as no surprise.We were going to barbeque today, but it's raining like crazy here, so we'll be migrating inside.Everybody understands up front that the first one of these negroes that drinks too much and breaks something of mine has got a problem. |

It's celebrated around here too. I think it's mainly a Texas thing. |
