even though this isn't really funny considering the bush administration's stance on affirmative action, i couldn't help but laugh at the hypocritical nature of this story. harvard business school should be ashamed of themselves for this nonsense. -------------------------------- http://www.thecrimson.com/article.aspx?ref=513563 Bush’s Personal Aide To Enroll at Business School Gottesman, college dropout and former beau to Bush daughter, to begin in the fall Published On 5/22/2006 2:12:14 AM By PARAS D. BHAYANI Crimson Staff Writer A 26-year-old college dropout who carries President Bush’s breath mints and makes him peanut butter-and-jelly sandwiches will follow in his boss’s footsteps this fall when he enrolls at Harvard Business School (HBS). Though it is rare for HBS—or any other professional or graduate school—to admit a student who does not have an undergraduate degree, admissions officers made an exception for Blake Gottesman, who for four years has served as special assistant and personal aide to Bush. Gottesman, a Texas native who attended Claremont-McKenna College in California for one year, has long had ties to the Bush family. He dated the president’s daughter, Jenna Bush, nearly ten years ago when he attended St. Andrew’s Episcopal School of Austin. After completing his freshman year at Claremont in 1999, he left to join the Bush presidential campaign and later served as a junior aide to former White House Chief of Staff Andrew Card. In February 2002, he became the president’s personal assistant. In his current role, Gottesman performs a wide range of duties, from dog-sitting the president’s Scottish terriers, Barney and Miss Beazley, to carrying the president’s speeches and giving him the “two-minute warning” before a speech begins. Gottesman has declined all requests for comment on his business school admission, but White House staffers have described him as loyal, warm, and fun-loving. “He is a friend and adviser to every employee of the White House, from career maintenance workers to cabinet secretaries,” Deputy Chief of Staff Joe Hagin told The Myrtle Beach Sun News. “He is consistently kind and warm and generous with his time and provides extraordinarily good advice.” Gottesman has likened his role at the White House to that of Charlie Young on the NBC television program “The West Wing.” When asked about his similarity to Young in an interactive question-and-answer session on the White House’s Web site, Gottesman wrote, “Charlie seems to be smarter, funnier, and better-looking. But, from what I remember—our jobs are probably pretty similar.” HBS spokesman James E. Aisner ’68 explained the decision to accept Gottesman, even though he is not a college graduate, by telling The Economist that “extraordinary circumstances will sometimes compel it to drop [its] rule” of only admitting students who hold bachelor's degrees. He refused to comment specifically on Gottesman, citing Harvard’s policy of not commenting on the admission of any individual student. Aisner also pointed out to The Economist that Harvard would surely admit applicants like Bill Gates and Michael Dell, both of whom are college dropouts. But the often-snarky British weekly noted: “Needless to say, holding the president’s hand-sanitizer is a far cry from heading a Fortune 500 company.” —Staff writer Paras D. Bhayani can be reached at pbhayani@fas.harvard.edu.

It is not. Affirmative Action is a measure taken to rectify past wrongs--when all those Conservatives rail against it they forget about all the qualified people who were refused positions only based on race-- But they are scum anyway. This is nothing more than just cheating and throwing the rules out-- It's the American way. |

This is just a fairly exaggerated example of the kinds of shyt White guys pull at nearly EVERY business, government, school, charity, club, etc. in this country. For example, the City of Chicago is currently being investigated by the Feds for hiring practices that included amongst MANY other offenses White politicians giving +$50,000 a year gigs to their unqualified TEENAGE sons. It's shyt like this this that makes me wanna tell White foks who whine, b*tch and moan about Affirmative Action to go somewhere and dryfuhk themselves in the a$$ with a rancid porcupine. |

So POTUS pulled some power strings and got his aide a spot at Harvard, what's the big deal? If you were the president's go-fer, wouldn't you expect some sort of special treatment. That assisting job might seem trivial, but it's probably very demanding and if he's done a good job, then he deserves some assistance. Bush is Harvard's most distinguished graduate (because of the office which he holds) and I don't see anything wrong with him helping someone out. The young man still has to pay his own tuition and expenses. And he probably won't get any other special treatment once he's there. Matter of fact, he's probably going to catch a lot of grief. ABM - Unfortunately, rancid porcupine would not work for that particular application |

No. I'm a firm believe of favors and favoritism. If you're in the position to help a friend, why wouldn't you. Is there some law that says POTUS can't help somebody, he's not entitled to use his special powers, authority and connections? You've never received help or called in a favor? Because I have. There's nothing illegal or immoral here. It's a simple act of human kindness. Nothing more. |

I do not condone the scenario you described above where people in power hired their unqualified kin to well-paying jobs. Most agencies have policies against nepotism and it's probably illegal. |

Mzuri, I don't have a problem with foks looking out for each other. But Bush & Co. are the very SAME people who will attempt to deny some young Black people - who DO have bachelors degrees - admittance into, say, the University of Michigan law school because they got lower LSAT scores than some White and Asian kids. Where the hell are the Affirmative Action polemics NOW? |

Mzuri, Well dayam. Condi's a friggin' GENIUS (I think she graduated college at, like, 19 or something.). I mean, I think she did a shyty job as the head our National Security Council (see 911). But comparing Condi to Bush's ignant White houseboy is so NOT cool. |

The reason I mentioned Condi is because BUSH is NOT a racist as you implied. Yes, she's brilliant, but he could have found a white person as equally intelligent as she. Anyway, back to the original topic - there is nothing wrong with POTUS pulling some strings for a friend. Because we Black people have suffered injustice doesn't mean he can't help ONE person. You are making a mountain out of a molehill. For no reason!!! |

Mzuri, I didn't say or imply that Bush was a racist. That is just your feeble attempt to disqualify my opinions. However, just because Bush has some Black employees does NOT disqualify him from being a racist. PLENTY of racists like a few Blacks they know (especially those who kiss White a$$e$) and despise the millions more they do not. And I as I said before, I have no problem with someone pulling strings. But come on now. Dude did ONE year of undergrad...ONE friggin year...and gets admitted to the world's best graduate business school? There's just no justification for that on ANY level...especially coming from foks who script and enforce laws that attempt to disqualify Affirmative Action via sophistic cries of reverse racism, quotas, etc. This is just an example of the GROSS hypocrisy of those foks who currently occupy the White House. And it's the very same kind of hypocrisy that had contributed to the calamitous Iraq War, FEMA Katrina fiasco, criminal outing of CIA operatives, fallacious Harriet Miers Supreme Court nomination, etc. |

One year of undergrad PLUS four years working for POTUS. Bear in mind that any type of WhiteHouse internship or fellowship is PRICELESS. Working at the highest levels of federal govt, being a personal aide to POTUS, being privy to conversations and meetings, working with WH staff, real world OJT experience - four years worth - has immense value that money can't buy. And it impresses college admissions ppl. That coupled with POTUS requesting a special favor from his alma mater. I don't see the gross hypocrisy that you claim. As to the war and all the rest, I don't agree with our soldiers being in Iraq. I don't like war and discord between nations. But our system of govt was f'd up before Mr. Bush came into office and it will be that way until we fix it. And I don't care much for the President, but I'd rather find fault elsewhere - and not question him for helping his former aide. |

Mzuri, You can dress this shyt anyway you wanna. Being a fuhking uneducated GOFER does NOT meet the standards for matriculation into Harvard Business School. Hell. By YOUR standards, the mofo who does the the White House lawn should be conferred a civil engineering degree from MIT or something. This HBS croynism is symbolic of the overall bvllshyt Bush & Co. has dealt this country the last +5 years. |

Okay. Well obviously the standard was met and obviously you're not in receive mode. You know good and well I wasn't referring to the landscaper, although it's highly likely that he already has a degree. If I have time later on today, I'm going to research the prerequisites of the WH gardener and post them here. Okay. But for right now, I have my morning routine to attend to - like having my breakfast. And so I'm not going to sit up here and continue to butt heads with you - go ahead on and stay your Black a$$ mad. |

Okay. Well obviously the standard was met and obviously you're not in receive mode. There was no standard that was met. This dude got in because of who he knew. For instance, Anderson Cooper was on Larry King talking about how hard his life was and how he had to overcome so many obstacles. Meanwhile, this guys mother is freakin Gloria Vanderbuilt. I'm sure he was told many of Christmas's that his parents could not afford to get him something. That is what makes me so mad about this country. Only the rich powerful and elite run it. The Kennedy's, Vanderbuilts, Rockefeller's, and let's not forget the Bush's. This country is ruled by Dynasty's. All the while prideing itself on being the "pinnacle of freedom". Where even the common man has a says in how this country is operated. Bullshyt!!! |

If we accept popular culture's understanding of Affirmative Action, Chris Hayden, this is indeed a case of affirmative action! Affirmative action was never about righting past wrongs. I am, by the way, differentiating the actual policy from how black folk perceived federal initiatives. At the federal level, at least, it was initially just informing blacks of opportunities at workplaces by posting employment opportunities in black neighborhoods, churches, local chpt of the urban league. And employers were suppose to hire folk based on competence . . . this didn't work and then timetables and quotas came up; the latter was implemented by Tricky Dicky Nixon . . . In today's vernacular affirmative action is getting folk jobs and access to higher learning based on some kind of handout or a hook up. . . was this not a hook up?
