Saturday I was at the Divoll Branch library and two white sisters came in. They was cheesy, teeth missing, hair screwed up, clothes looked like they had slept in 'em. In their twenties. They cussed a blue streak, laughed loud, talked about seeing their men in prison, kicking this one's all, ripping off that one, how high they was gonna get that afternoon--all that behavior that you usually associate with black female hoodrats and hoochie mamas. In this part of the country most of those live out in the suburbs or in other counties altogether like Franklin and Jefferson county. They must have been around to score some crack or something-- Got me to thinking. Black folks are always talking about equality. Are these the kind of white folks they want to be equal to? If Black people are truly equal are we not going to have to have a proportion of people who are like them? Do black people want to be equal or SUPERIOR? |

Black people have a serious complex. It's not about being superior to them--that NEVER enter their minds. What fears those most than anything else is to be seen inferior. They have an extraordinarily deep inferiority complex. Despite that fact that you're right, there's some in every race, which makes it normal, black people seem to be more embarrassed by it. They'd give their right eye than to be seen inferior. They are paralyzed by this fear. Unfortunately.

But if I am trying to be educated, urban, rich, aren't I trying to be SUPERIOR to most white folks, who are not? Is there anything wrong with that? |

We are superior regardless. Obtaining knowledge and wealth Is our God-given right. We are destined for greatness. |

Chris: But if I am trying to be educated, urban, rich, aren't I trying to be SUPERIOR to most white folks, who are not? Is there anything wrong with that? Tonya: Well. I guess it depends on how you look at it--education, urban and rich are human things; not white: I educate myself because I enjoy learning and contributing new things to my overall self. Whether I choose to live in an urban setting depends on how safe the neighborhood is and accessibility to jobs (which we had before desegregation and black flight). As for rich, I think everybody want to be comfortable. Comfortable and superior are two very different things though. Comfortable isn't even white. It's more so a mind-set. |

White people are the bar for what's human. Black people have been searching for their humanity since slavery. Trying to be white... actually makes a whole lot of sense. Problem is: it's literally destroying us. Racism/colorism is sick. |

Before a person can try to be equal to someone else they must first be inferior to the one they are trying to equal, therefore, to choose such a path is to condemn oneself to being a loser for their entire life.My potential is the standard by which I have always judged myself.Good enough has never been acceptable when I knew that I could do better, and that is why, in a nutshell, that I have never failed at anything I put my hands on.Comparisons are for the weak, the stupid and the lazy.Constantly hone your abilities, apply yourself diligently and flatly refuse to lose. Then you won't need a scorecard and others will start trying to equal you. |

Strange question . . . as I understand, the issue of equality never pertained really to individuals or to white people, but equal access to public accomodations and equal as citizens of this country. There is a very long history, in both fiction and nonfiction, that clearly makes the point that black folk do not want to be like white people. This, of course, doesn't mean that there weren't people who did want to be like white folk; there is a long history demonstrating this too, but the former, I think, has been the most significant. Many blacks have always known that whites comprised a variety of social classes, including ethnic groups and economic/ cultural class. Part of the problem is that many blacks have equated humanity with whiteness, as I have stated and Tonya more recently. But blacks others have differentiated bourgeois or elite class values, both components of all cultures, from the socalled lumpen and socalled backward social practices. In this sense, equality, as many of the conservative civil righters was concerned, pertain to equal access, etc . . . that to be equal with whites, many who were poor, illiterate, irasible . . . |

That's it exactly,Yukio. At least, in my opinion.Equality is all about equal access and equal opportunity, not a cookie cutter society in which it is mandated by law that everyone is identical. To emulate the admirable qualities of someone you respect is a good thing, but to strive to be 'just like white people' is ridiculous, since an astounding degree of inequality can exist between any two examples of a given demographic.Should I be trying to equal Stephen Hawking, Larry Bird or George Bush? Take Hawking's mind, Bird's body and leave Bush out of the equation entirely and you would have something worth striving for. |

Equality is, of course, relative. 8 ounces of oil is equal to 8 ounces of milk, but it takes circumstances to determine which is more valuable. |

You guys are Funny! I'm hoppin on the access wagon too. Equality is a mindset for most people. I mean we treat white folks like the Jones'. We take everything they have (Moet, Gucci, purple hair) and we exploit it ten times greater on some video to say "we got what you got!" I never did understand that. Damn equality I want more than they have, and access is the only way to get it. |

Equality is being able to walk into any store and not be followed around. That's provided we're buzzed-in in the first place. So, perhaps equality is just getting through the door. In our society, it's a given that Blacks are thieves whereas Whites earn everything they have. History teaches otherwise. Was it not the European (White) explorers who ravaged the world's resources with their greed and ruthlessness? Was it not the European who committed genocide against a multitude of non-whites, the world over, who were not yielding to their savagery? I can go on. Yet, when Whites enter any store, from their neighborhood market, to the mall, to high-end boutiques, benevolence is presumed. However, when Blacks enter these shops, including their neighborhood market, wrongdoing is presumed. I believe culturally what Blacks with half a brain truly strive for is not to emulate Whites, per se. But to share in the presumed benevolence which goes along with being White. Also, I'd like to point out that Whites by and large emulate us far more than we do them. Jazz, blues, R&B, reggae, hip hop, nose rings, tanned skin, cornrows, full lips and more recently, Black girl asses. White women are flowing to plastic surgeons left and right having ass implants. Ass implants! |
