I'm walking down Grand avenue and I'm getting to one it it's hot spots--a corner inhabited by gangbangers, prostitutes, pimps, dope addicts, winoes. At all times of the day you have to be on your toes while walking through there because of what can happen.

I see a crowd. There's a bunch of them. Bad news.
I man up immediately. I might have to get violent. Kick somebodys ass like I kick Rustang/Cynique's on this site..

I pass by two brothers sitting on a stoop.

"Hey big man! How ya doing," they say.

I pass by a woman. Obviously inebriated.

"Happy Holiday to you sir and may you enjoy it," she says.

I was feeling about six inches high. Maybe it IS middle class educated negroes that are the problem

Flushed with your assumption that your every movement is of interest to the world, and your every word carries weight, you reveal yourself to be the deluded ass-hole that you are, chrishayden. Your trite little anecdote does serve one purpose, however; it reveals what a hypocrite you are. Your negative expectations from encounters with people of your own race are a sign of the self-hate you rountinely accuse others of harboring. What next? Will you treat us to the intimate details of what happpened on your way to the bathroom when your chronic diarrhea kicked in and you crapped on yourself and how, not to be deterred, you bid the world to inhale the foul smell and honor you with praise.

No. Because you still have to ask yourself what might have happened if you were a woman. I mean, would it have been safe for a woman to walk in that area. Or a child. What about at night time or in an alley. What if the ppl you encountered weren't in a pleasant mood and what might have happened if they were desperate for money. The streets aren't safe anymore and it has nothing to do with us being educated snobs. Violence can happen to anyone.

And don't pay any attention to what Cynique just said, she knows good and well she wouldn't be caught dead walking thru the mean streets of St Louis, East St Louis or Chicago. LOL!

Well, chrishayden/muzuri, the fact that chrishayden's trepidation turned out to be unwarranted says something about giving his own people the benefit of the doubt sometimes. And pay no attention to chrishayden's lies. I do live near Chicago, and the town that I live in is a microcosm of Chicago with "good" areas and "bad" areas. And one thing that always renews my faith is that wherever I go, whether to pick up an order of ribs or to buy lottery tickets, to purchase hair-care products, or drop of things at the cleaners, I have not been accousted. I act unafraid in the run-down areas where these places are located, and the street people accept me and don't give me any flack. I have even walked home from someplace at night and had the crack heads tell me to to be careful.

Hi, Moonie: The DuSable Museum is the pride of the chicagoland African American Community. It is located on the south side of Chicago in the same upscale Hyde Park area as the campus of the University of Chicago. But the neighborhoods surrounding Hyde Park have fallen victim to urban blight.

I would venture to say that this situation is more a reflection of your insecurity when it comes to Black Folks. If you get the "fight or flights" whenever you see a group of Black Folks in the hood you would be a nervous wreck in Atlanta... And San Diego to for that matter. Only there you would see a bunch of thug lookalikes actually discussing Dinosaurs and the cosmos... (He he)

You know what CH? You have a really good point there too. Educated back Folks love to judge not only the less inclined, but the less learned as well. We are some self-righteous em-effers. There is always that notion that self preserved "I" are not like "those" People. Myself? I was once one of them. I was never a gang banger, but I’ve spent many a night out in the street loud talkin and drinkin till I saw it all again. (you know.. those Brass Monkey days) I do think that we are too quick to judge in some situations, and to proud to help in others...
Sorry for the dual post..

well . . . I didn't know you all were so romantic! About black folks--bourgie blacks, the black lumpen, and the black working class--that is!

I have been on both sides. I have been the bourgie negroe who takes off his watch at 4 am as I walk to a tenement building at the end of a cul de sac, and I have also been the object of the gaze of bourgie and elderly black folk who equate my urban suit--timbs, jeans, and wife beater--as a sign of criminality.

But there is a third; I have also been the victim of self-conscious high school and college graduates who have attempted to use me as the object of their jokes for their own self-aggrandizement . . .

The fact is: Chris Hayden could have been robbed; it happens, perhaps, everyday!

Chris Hayden is probably both bourgie and judgemental. But who isn't?

Working class folk are also judgemental.

And, yes . . . there are two other points to be made:

There are too many middle class people who have no class . . . because their status is based on their salary or wealth not their deportment and/or social and leisure practices.

And, of course, there are many poor and working poor folk who are quite bourgeois, precisely because of their social and leisure practices.

The black middle class could not be THE problem, because the poverty and lack of freedoms of black folk is not a black people problem it is a human problem . . . a cultural group, a national problem, and problem of injustice, and a problem of white supremacy . . .

Me and Rustang were walking down the street one day when we came to a bar.

"Hey, let's go in," I said.

"I won't," he squealed. "They're going to laugh at me when they see I'm pregnant."

"Who is the father?" I asked.

"I don't know. I don't have eyes in the back of my head," he whimpered.

All:

It has taken me some time to realize that Middle Class Black people hate and fear lower class blacks--those who just moved into the Middle Class hate them the worst.

Now these people always suggest what blacks who are less well off should do but their fear and hatred of them clouds the advice.

Mostly they want them to die and dry up and blow away so they won't be embarassed by them when they are with their white friends--never wondering why any white person would try to lump them with some black people who were less well off in the first place could be a "friend"--do we lump them with Jeffery Dahmer or trailer trash?

Unless they can give them a job or some money--which they can't or won't--they should just leave them alone.

Of course they won't. Makes them feel good to have somebody they feel like they can talk about in mixed company--

As is his usual modus operandi, a desperate chrishayden resorts to creating distorted scenarios casting himself as infallible and intelligent, and everyone else as flawed and deplorable. But this over-the-hill slob is nothing more than a self-important wanna-be who has missed the mark all of his sorry life. Stupidity has nailed one foot down, and this lame-assed loser just runs around in circles, too dizzy to realize that he hasn't been anywhere and ain't going no place. St. Louis is crissy's oyster and he is a grain of sand that never evolved into a pearl. Pathetic.

You waste your time providing links for me to click on to, chris A/K/A/ the Pillsbury Dough Boy hayden, and I might add in response to your insipid observations about the black middle-class that what you say just proves what a hard time you have wrapping your pea brain around anything that doesn't fit into your stale little outlook. You have finally come to a conclusion that many before you have reached in regard to the black bourgeoise, and you think you have had an epiphany! Too bad you and everybody else who esposes this blanket view of the black midddle class can't put things in perspective as this applies to a capitalistic society. But it makes you and your ilk feel good about yourselves when you nobly take up the cause of the underclasses, resorting to a lot of rhetoric to mask the blatant generalities involved in the reprimands you direct at people who have have escape poverty. Indeed, the real fallacy of you self-righteous prigs has to do with the mass indictment of a whole class of people. There are millions and millions of people who comprise the black middle-class and not all of them conform to the mind-set you has boxed them into; not all of them look down on poor people. It's all about individual circumstances, but you think it makes you look astute when you indulge your skewed views by portraying all middle class blacks as detached, uncaring and unaware of racism, and all under-class blacks as blameless victims who can't rise above their means. Ol chrishayden could never be accused of being an original thinker, he parrots what all of the rich, black, finger-pointing intellectuals who make money off of writing books say about their peers. What a fraud you are, crissy-boy. Go stroll back along the mean streets of St. Louis, and tremble in your boots as all of your middle-class fears kick in.

Batmocop:

I don't know what you mean by home training, but if you mean how individuals are socialized within their home and community, then I can only partially agree.

My point was that the "problem," as I understood it--intraracial conflict and general black impoverishment--has to be addressed at various levels, for the origins and the continuation of these and the making anew of the same is still effectuated at various levels, ie structural and individual levels.

Several of you are missing the point.

I was NOT going to be robbed, assaulted, cussed at or even pan handled which is what mostly happens to me when I walk the streets--you have to realize that often when I'm in street mode I look like I'M going to rob somebody else!!

The point is that the folks was just out there chillin' and if I had initiated some unpleasantry in anticipation of some static--a sneer, a curse word, ignoring them, etc. maybe the next person to come along might have gotten hassled.

You see, what I have discovered is that unpleasantry is much like a chain reaction--I yell at you, you yell at somebody else, they yell at a third person, the third person kicks a fourth, the fourth shoots a fifth--and on and on until it may come back to you.

It is my realization that I was unnecessarily tensing myself for confrontation that made me feel ashamed--especially since I am an Apostle of the Dr. Martin Luther King and I have made it my mission in life to spread some LOVE in the ghetto.

I got your point Chris, you expressed yourself clearly. I think it's commendable that you want to spread the love around the ghetto and to the less fortunate, but things really are much different than they were before.

We have mass poverty, homelessness, hunger, most folks can't afford health care, one of our oldest major cities has been washed away with most everyone still displaced, inflation is inflating, the economy sucks, the president is mismanaging, we're under constant threat of terror attacks, and people are on edge. It's impossible to know ppl's intentions and it's not safe out here.

Because you are a macho man, you want to be brave and strong and fearless. But your feelings of apprehension are natural. There's nothing wrong with you - it's the rest of the world that's all f'd up.

Yukio I do indeed mean how individuals are given their social values in the home. And I agree that the problems of racial inequality need to be addressed systematically at all levels. But at the risk of being accused of being narrow minded and over generalizing (ooh you got a sharp tongue Cynique) I believe that it is the responsibility of those who made it out as well as those who are trying, to come together to help ourselves prosper in the long run. Instead of those of us (and those of us only) who sit back and judge those less fortunate or educated or inclined as the aforementioned black middle class.

batmocop:

I don't understand your last sentence.

With that said, black people can not depend on other black people. As many have said in the past, white people do not feel responsible for other whites (this is really not true . . . but, I will use this position to make a point). As citizens of this country, and really in person in this country be they citizen or alien, have certain rights. African Americans, as citizens, as voters, are suppose to have some part in community life and local, municipal, and general government, with representative responsible to their constituency, as well as citizens in general. And, yes, one's family, fraternity and sorority, church, and other organizations that she to are responsible for her . . . But to use terms like "ourselves" and mean black community is difficult now in a moment, the post-civil rights era (though this has alway been a problem in african american history), when folk call themselves citizens and Americans first, who happen to be black . . .

chrishayden has no problem portraying himself as a heroic do-gooder, and is quick to tell everybody about it, but he is also quick to question and distort the motives of others and to utilize ridicule to disparage their intentions, dishing out all of the unpleasantries that he is so "dismayed" by because they spawn more of the same. tsk-tsk. chrishayden, himself, is middle-class and yet to listen to him, you'd think he is the only one in this category who reaches out to the indigenious. Then he cops a plea and reveals that he is a disciple of Martin Luther King, - Martin Luther King who was actually more about racial integration than anything, the very integration that chrishayden is so contemptuous of because he thinks it reflects self-loathing by blacks. A little consistency on chrishayden's part would make this "macho man" more plausible. Snort.

Thank You, Cynique.

ChrisHayden:

You must know, due to your legendary obtuseness that at least when it comes to my posts you have a permanent "Get Out of Jail Because I Don't Get It Free" card.

You must work on differentiating fictional narrative from dissertating . . . perhaps that will help you better explain your experiences.

On my "obtuseness": This word could be accurate, but I am, unlike yourself, the first to claim responsibility for any incoherence, on my part. This is, actually, one of the first rules of writing . . . the writer is always responsible for illegibility.

Of course, confusion often comes about when the reader lacks basic knowledge of the content.

This is not the case in your post, as I recently described . . . it is just open to many interepretations.

I am surprised that Mzuri got your point . . . it must have been via intuition or commonality of experience.

That you said, "you have to realize that often when I'm in street mode I look like I'M going to rob somebody else!!," demonstrates your own "abtuseness."

That information was perhaps the most important in your last rendering of your post.

In fact, you shift from class and racial tensions embedded in sociological relations to basic interpersonal irritances created throughout the day by happenstance. While these are interdependent, the latter, as you lay it out, seems so divorced from your earlier comments that one could question your memory or investigate the possibility if you have split or multiple personalities . . . who knows?
