i just watched oprah's big celebration of black women. it was a nice affair. i noticed whitney houston (along with beyonce) was not there. do you think oprah invited whitney, and whitney just didn't show up? or do you think whitney (and her husband bobby brown) are just too "hood" for oprah and her type of crowd? brandy was there, but no whitney or beyonce! wtf? any thoughts? |

My guess is that they didn't show up--scheduling conflicts, "illness", etc., etc. |

Hi Lil Ze!!! I missed it. Did she give away some diamond jewelry again? If so, then obviously she wouldn't want to include Whitney. Who gives expensive jewelry to a crack head? Beyonce was there last year, maybe she's busy or something. Did you make the lemontini's Oprah has been talking about? |

I heard that Beyonce was out of the country and couldn't make it. Ditto Toni Morrison. Lena Horne who is way up in her 80s possibly wasn't up to the trip. Was Aretha there?? I didn't see her. Surely Whitney was invited, but probably couldn't put the pipe down long enough to pick up a plane ticket. tsk-tsk. I thought the production was a self-conscious, mish-mash contrived to evoke the maudlin emotions that Oprah is so good at personifying. It was like all the attendees were on cue to quiver what an awwwwesome experience the gathering was, grateful that they had been anointed by Mother Oprah and had made the cut, glad to be there to see and be seen. zzzzzzzzzzz |

It think that this was a wonderful thing Oprah did. It would have been nicer, though, if the show had been a bit more about the women who were being honored and less about OPRAH honoring them. |

Cynnique: I thought the production was a self-conscious, mish-mash contrived to evoke the maudlin emotions that Oprah is so good at personifying. Tonya: It was sooo painfully obvious, Cynnique. I had to keep looking away out of embarrassment. The only part that wasn't excruciating was towards the end, when they picked up the mike and went to church; which, as Oprah testified, wasn’t rehearsed. Apparently, that was the only part that was not. Overall, I was extremely disappointed with what looked like synthetic appreciation and an overworked spectacle. The meaning behind it all merited a lot more sincerity.

Holy shit,Tonya. It took Oprah to open up the lines of communications between us. Maybe she's got extraordinary powers, after all. Heh-heh. |

You were looking away from the television? It must have been really embarrassing. Is it coming on again - I missed it. Maybe they'll re-air it on Oh! |

I missed you, Yvette. Were you there? It was hard to distinguish one diva from another because they all looked like a bunch of drag queens. meoooooow. Mzuri, Oprah's "Legends" gala was a one-time event. The TV special was a presentation at an event which actually took place last year. |

Cynique says: "It was hard to distinguish one diva from another because they all looked like a bunch of drag queens." HAHAHAHAHA!!! It's is interesting how these days if a woman get's very dolled up, often one of the first things that come to mind is "drag queen". Those dayam RuPaul, Divine and the rest of their kind have sorta perverted our perception of what was considered classically female. |

>The TV special was a presentation at an event which actually took place last year ...Hmmm, Coretta, Rosa, and Katherine all passed away after being honored by Oprah at this event? One spin: She honored them just in time. Another spin... (LOL) |

What's up with showing re-hashed events from last year? I saw part of that on Oprah's daytime show already. The luncheon part where the waiters gave all the ladies their bling and everyone was jumping up and down. You'd think that was played out by now. ABM - Some of the ladies were totally overdone. With the hair and the make-up and some were styling horrid gawdy looking head gear. There was a definite need for a stylist or some wardrobe consultations or some something! They are all beautiful women, but a few didn't grasp the less-is-more concept. And yes, Oprah really needs to stop with the constant blowing of the horn. |

Mzuri, Well. I don't know. To me, those sistahs look A LOT like many sistahs you'll see at most Sunday services at Black churches. *shrugs* But the part that made me chuckle were chicks like Alicia Keys and Ashanti being in attendance. I couldn't help thinking "Isn't there a kiddy section at this shindig for those little chickadees to occupy so they wouldn't be in the way of grown foks?" |

I thought it was a beautiful show. I watched it twice. Those woman had a great time. No one else would have taken the time to do something like that for them. They all seemed to have appreciated the gesture. Now that picture Oprah had taken with all of them there was beautiful. Of course, Ms. Oprah was the center attraction. The funny thing about Alicia and Ashanti was when they were showing interview clips of them. Alicia was being all insightful and Ashanti was like, "Yo!" and "This is crazy." It was funny to see the difference. Didn't Ms. Ashanti put out a book too? Was it filled with Yos and Crazy? |

Always_lurking: "Didn't Ms. Ashanti put out a book too? Was it filled with Yos and Crazy?" It's probably similar in depth and complexity to that book ILLITERATE singer (and esteemed babymomma) Fantasia wrote and released less than a year ago. |

You know, I didn't even give a thought to Whitney. But I did ask why India Arie and Fantasia weren’t there since Ashanti and Alicia Keys were, and since Beyounce was invited. I also wondered why Brandy was never shown or interviewed while Ashanti and Alicia were constantly. Is Oprah like all the other racists/colorists: It's acceptable to show dark women only when they've reached a certain age -- Mammy/Aunt Jemima/Aunt Sarah's age? ...That's what it looked like to me.

Does anyone know who ALL were actually invited, and of those who were invited, who declined the invitation or didn't show? I thought the invitees (and of those who did attended) didn't even know who else was invited, when they received their invitation, but it reads like, some are making assumptions, because so and so wasn't there, then they were not invited. |

Mzuri, in case you haven't seen the picture, the link is below. It's possibility that Oprah is feeling the heat of the black community and threw this gala to show her support. But every woman at the event deserved recognition, they have paid their dues. I say Kudos to all of them. I think Whitney was in rehab at the time. http://www2.oprah.com/presents/2006/legends/legend/legend_main.jhtml Minnie E Miller Author/Publisher www.millerscribs.com
