04/20/06 09:36:13, Categories: Celebrity News Halle Berry Wished She Was White Halle Berry used to pray she would be "cured" of being black. The stunning actress dreamed of finding a pill to turn her skin white when she was a child, according to The Sun newspaper. The 39-year-old - who was the first black woman to win an Oscar, for her performance in Monster's Ball - is quoted as saying: "Being a black woman I've struggled with that my whole life - feeling that if I changed, my life would be better." Meanwhile, the X-Men star has also confessed she is insecure about her stunning looks - despite being one of the most beautiful women in the world. The actress claims the fact she is frequently included on lists of the sexiest actresses doesn't changed her mind about her appearance. She said: "Although such things do wonders for my confidence, I'm never able to take them seriously. If they really knew me, they'd realize that I'm far from secure about my looks."

This kind of sad talk would only come from a bunch of hapless niggas who aren't satisfied with being who they are. Get your black asses over it, because you will be "black" for the rest of your ignorant black lives. |

I think her words are taken compleatly out of context. I actually read the original interview that quote came from and here it is. And yes I like X-Men so what! http://www.darkhorizons.com/news06/xmen3.php |

It's a little long and tedious even I didn't read the whole thing but here the part that is apparently so controversal. Question: Brett, you are faced with political issues and I'm particularly intrigued. Chief among them in this story is something that triggers something that's massive in this X-Men universe and that's the notion of a cure. If you don't want to be a mutant anymore, you don't have to be. This triggers all sorts of upheavals with the X-Men and the Brotherhood. It seems to me when I read it that each X-Men character has a different reaction and I think that's really important. Maybe you can talk about the character's reactions? In starting with you Ian, obviously Magneto has very strong opinions about this. Ian McKellen: Marvel will tell you that they like X-Men more than any of their other titles, because it appeals specifically to three groups-the demographic is young blacks, young Jews, and young gays-and that they identify themselves more than most. Although, all teenagers perhaps think of themselves as mutants and that they are mistreated by the rest of society for a time, for no good reason. As a gay man, the idea that someone might come along with a cure... Brett Ratner: (jokingly) You're gay?? Ian McKellen: Well, there aren't many of us in Hollywood [laughs]. But there are people who think gay people can be cured, so my reaction to that, that I can be cured as a mutant, is contemptuous, that people think I need curing for my sexuality. The idea that black people can take a pill that would cure them of being black is absolutely appalling to me. I'd like to hear of any character in this film who thinks this cure is a good idea, but there are some and they argue the case. It'll get you worked up, this movie, and so it should. I don't think people should be cured of their god-given nature. Brett Ratner: In that idea alone, when I first met with you I said, "The core of this idea is what I'm excited about, which is why I think this script takes it to a whole other level.' I don't know who came up with it but the idea of the cure-I guess it goes back to the comics obviously-but the idea of the cure in this film really helps make this third film just miles ahead of the last two. Because every single character in this movie will have an opinion and have a reason for it or against it, and it motivates a lot of the plot. It's a fantastic device and it's a fantastic concept that is excellent. Ian McKellen: And some people get cured and get changed. But of course we don't know, this cure being a new thing, how long it's going to last, probably will not go as far as X-Men 4 [laughs] Question: What's Storm's view on this? Halle Berry: I echo everything Ian said. Being a black woman, a woman of color, I think that's been an issue I've struggled with my whole life. Feeling like somehow when I was a child that if I could change myself, somehow my life would be invariably better. And as I've gotten older, I think I've come to terms with what nonsense that is and this movie certainly adds light to that dark subject. Brett Ratner: Storm, in my opinion and I think Halle's, is one of the X-Men who are most opposed to the use of the cure. And when you see the passion that these characters have for the subject matter, it totally motivates each individual's plight and their angst. Every scene that happens in this movie is motivated by their opinion on the subject, so the plot is fantastic in my opinion. |

Abdi85, you see - that's the problem with ppl posting stuff from blogs. No one knows who wrote it, where it came from, who to attribute it to or anything else. Statements are taken out of context, things are fabricated and anybody can say anything about anyone. Maybe Halle said it and maybe she didn't. http://halle-berry-news.newslib.com/story/2853-3216396/ BB - If there's no source, it's probably not credible. Just because it's online doesn't mean it's true. If Halle really said that she wished she was white, get it from a reliable source. Not a blog. Stick to facts. Truths. Instead of posting gossip and hearsay. I, for one, would greatly appreciate it. You got me pissed at Halle for something she probably didn't even say. |

I applaud her for admitting what she did. Many people felt that way as a child, I did. Who wouldn't? You're constantly fed images of white kids getting the better toys and cereal. They have all the fun in the cartoons (Scooby Dooby Doo). They have the perfect families (The Brady bunch). They live leisurely lives (Fantasy Island). They're beautiful (Ginger - Gilligan's Island). They don't get "Whuppins," no matter how bad they are (Dennis the Menace - Bridget). And even their women are super heroes (Wonder woman - The Bionic Women). I thought they had easer lives too. And I thought my life would be perfect if I was like them. But I grew up. Sadly many have not, so on behalf of the young and old, I applaud Halle, Angela Basset, Lauren Hill, Mary J. Blige and all the other black/colored women who are speaking publicly about this. I even heard Vanessa Williams Mention something similar on Oprah last week. Good for her.

Hey I grew up in the 50's. Went to an All black school from lst through 4th grade (before I was thrown in the integrationist meat grinder). We all colored our people orange when we drew people. I remember one kid drew a girl colored black and caught hell. All our school books showed white children. It is an awkward thing to talk about. She was trying to be open and honest and wound up looking like a shmoe. She grew up and got over it. She is just being honest--at least she got over it. Lots of folks do not-- I think she's cute sometimes. Other times I wonder how she got to be a sex symbol--but it is all powder smoke mirrors and air brushing, isn't it? |

Chrishayden, You are the first male I've ever heard to refer to Halle as just 'cute'. Most men worship the ground she walks on. Halle looks better in motion than she does in pictures. IMO I don't think she's very photogenic. All the Revlon ads make her look wooden, and like a mannequin. |

Oh, for cryin out loud, give Halle a break! She seems to be the star around which all of you malcontents orbit. Everybody is misguided and wistful when they're young, pining to be something that will provide them with an escape into happyland. All through grade school, for some reason, I became fixated on Chinese people, and I wanted to be one of them. Later, of course, I just wanted to look whatever way it took to be popular with the guys and I longed for big legs and large boobs. These were prime assets back in the 50s. zzzzzzzzzzzzz |

Hello, this is my first time here & I hope this works. Did Halle really dream of being white or is that gossip? If she said it she is a bad influence. She is a major star & little girls look up to her. What if all little black girls dreamed of being white. That would be worse than a plague. On our community's spirit. |

Oh, please. I didn't wish I was white when I grew up because I wanted so badly to look more like my family members who are more brown/dark skinned than light skinned, but MANY little girls did ..... what else was up with all the little girls who only wanted white dolls, who only thought long blond hair was pretty, who only wanted "good-haired" hispanic and asian girls as friends, who only had crushes on light haired blue-eyed boys in school and wished to have children that looked like them (and were CONGRATULATED if they did have kids like that)? If you didn't know at least 5 or more girls like this in school, I wish I lived in your America. Many girls thought and STILL think like this. The only difference is that they don't have newspapers/magazines interviewing them and asking them if they think/thought like that...but they SHOW IT every time they buy a blond wig, blue contacts, bleaching cream, and every time they ADMIT they only want to date light skinned guys because they want light skinned babies. I just find it strange that you guys had to wait for someone famous to say it, before you believed it. Please...she wished she was white growing up... and so did half your own classmates, and so do many of your neighbors and co-workers, so don't act like it's something brand new. |

Aurora I know you mean well but come one, Halle the child could have felt anyway she wanted it has no bearing on what she chooses to repersent as an adult. And I think the way she chose to answer the question about a fictional pill that "cures" but homogenizes and conforms people, essentially transforming them into the majority was tastefull. And espically the time we grew up in I am not surprised she wished she was white. I wouldn't even be surprised if little black girls today wished they were white when all they are fed are images of beautiful, healthy and desired images of white woman and white children. Sure there are the very few black faces around, but gilrs are essentially told that Beyonce and her blond wig is the epitomy of black beauty. I ehco Tonya's statement its about time people start dealing with this issue in black children's psychology. |

So, no; I did not know five girls like that. Looking back now, I'm sure there were many; but how was I to know I wasn't the only one. And though I didn't have blue-eyed crushes, white dolls, or wished for babies - let alone one of a certain color - I did want the goddamned cereal! It would have nice to know that so did everybody else. And that's why I think this is a healthy discussion. Also: "I just find it strange that you guys had to wait for someone famous to say it, before you believed it." Tonya: Toni Morrison said it a long time ago--and we believed it.... You really were in a different America. |

Perhaps, someone else saying it will make it less taboo to say--especially when that someone are folks like Helle Berry and Vanessa Williams. If they felt that way, how could anyone else not. It's not like they're the blackest among us-- Of course that's the way it'll be perceived. But no one said it best than Toni. That'll never change.

Tonya, girl, that's all girls talked about in school: having light skinned babies and which guys could give them one. And the boys weren't much better with the way they talked about only dating girls with "good hair" (and constantly making fun of those who didn't have it). I used to beg my mother to homeschool me. |

I don't know how chrishayden could wonder why anyone would consider him "all wet" when that's exactly what he is. In a post addressed to me, he has the nerve to "welcome" me back when I haven't been anywhere, and the presumtuousness to inform me that "all is forgiven" like I give a hoot whether or not he "forgives" me. I thought Halle was white. Anyway Halle needs to be thankful that she does not look like Gabrielle Union or Sanaa Lathan. Even though those are beautiful women they will still never get the roles that she does, because they look "too black". I think she needs to "suck it up" and stop complaining. |

LOL....I was on a board once with a "mulatto" woman who insisted that a white woman raising a black child should be considered a form of child abuse. No lie. This discussion reminds me of her. Of course, I've told you all about my first boyfriend, white skinned (but Jewish). His mother's family refused to acknowledge him or his siblings and didn't speak to them. He actually felt more in place at the "black" school than he did around white people because they made a point of making him feel different. I can only IMAGINE what a black skinned child surrounded by white relatives would feel like. |

Does Halle Berry look half-white to anyone? So many people think that she looks 100% Black which is a far stretch IMO. By looking at her, she looks like a product of a mulatto parent & and a Black/Colored parent with Indian. Not a White Mother/Black Father combo. She still looks very mixed though. |
