When I saw this post on CNN, I couldn't believe my eyes. Then, Lou Dobbs had a report about this on his news show on Friday! The headline is: Omaha School District to Split Along Racial Lines Link: http://www.cnn.com/2006/EDUCATION/04/14/omaha.schools.ap/index.html Story: LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) -- In a move decried by some as state-sponsored segregation, the Legislature voted Thursday to divide the Omaha school system into three districts -- one mostly black, one predominantly white and one largely Hispanic. Supporters said the plan would give minorities control over their own school board and ensure that their children are not shortchanged in favor of white youngsters. Republican Gov. Dave Heineman signed the measure into law. Omaha Sen. Pat Bourne decried the bill, saying, "We will go down in history as one of the first states in 20 years to set race relations back." "History will not, and should not, judge us kindly," said Sen. Gwen Howard of Omaha. Attorney General Jon Bruning sent a letter to one of the measure's opponents saying that the bill could be in violation of the Constitution's equal-protection clause and that lawsuits almost certainly will be filed. But its backers said that at the very least, its passage will force policymakers to negotiate seriously about the future of schools in the Omaha area. The breakup would not occur until July 2008, leaving time for lawmakers to come up with another idea. "There is no intent to create segregation," said Omaha Sen. Ernie Chambers, the Legislature's only black senator and a longtime critic of the school system. He argued that the district is already segregated, because it no longer buses students for integration and instead requires them to attend their neighborhood school. Chambers said the schools attended largely by minorities lack the resources and quality teachers provided others in the district. He said the black students he represents in north Omaha would receive a better education if they had more control over their district. Coming from Chambers, the argument was especially persuasive to the rest of the Legislature, which voted three times this week in favor of the bill before it won final passage on the last day of the session. Omaha Public Schools Superintendent John Mackiel said the law is unconstitutional and will not stand. "There simply has never been an anti-city school victory anywhere in this nation," Mackiel said. "This law will be no exception." The 45,000-student Omaha school system is 46 percent white, 31 percent black, 20 percent Hispanic, and 3 percent Asian or American Indian. Boundaries for the newly created districts would be drawn using current high school attendance areas. That would result in four possible scenarios; in every scenario, two districts would end up with a majority of students who are racial minorities. Copyright 2006 The Associated Press. Screw it. Integration mad negroes push integration as the cure all for everything when what you want is quality education. Lots of negroes think if you can rub up against a white person you will be rich as Bill Gates and smart as Einstein. Well, let me tell you. All the neighborhoods are segregated. White folks, in general start moving out of a neighborhood when they SEE too many black people going through, not when too many moved in. Are yeshivas integrated? No. They are Jewish schools. Are Catholic schools integrated? No you gotta be a Catholic. Here in St. Louis all the white folks moved out and most of those that didn't send their kids to private schools. I took part in some of the early integration experiments as a 12 year old. Go to school and they got signs that said "This is Ku Klux Klan Whiteland, Stay out". Parents having meeting cuz they don't want their kids squaredancing with no junglebunnies. All this and you still gotta learn. But you gotta do this, right? I found that people I knew who went to totally black grade and high schools did just as well as those who went to integrated schools out in the world and that they do not hate white people as much. But you gotta go through something, right? Why did I have to go through it and lots of these same negroes were too damn scared to fight for good jobs and equal treatment on them. Negroes love to throw their kids to the dogs in search of some chimera they are too cowardly to get for themselves. Give it up, Negroes. You need to fight for the control and the money in those schools. |

--"Are Catholic schools integrated? No you gotta be a Catholic."-- Uh, Wrong. *I* went to catholic school and I was a baptist. As a matter of fact, a large percentage of the baltimore children who attend catholic schools are NOT catholic. As I said in the other post... It's pretty clear to me now that you would rather just put all your energy into criticizing the world and discouraging everyone else who'd rather get off their ass and make a change. If someone needs to "give it up" Chris, it's you. :P |

Seperate but equal is not a bad concept as long as things are truly equal. Under the currenct system we have now, things are still sepearate and unequal. Yes, white kids and black kids can go to shcool together but for the most part they don't. Black schools are innner city schools and white schools are in the burbs. Funding for money follows the white kids. Why not have a system where Black students get nurtured by black teachers and get the same funding as white schools? Don't just have a knee jerk reaction because you think someone is going to make you sit on the back of the bus. |
