"That makes it kind of nice for the family that they weren't held against their own will." Huh? It was nice that they drowned? Some ppl just shouldn't talk to the media. In fact, they shouldn't talk at all. And ppl need to supervise their young children better than this. The only foul play here is neglectful parenting. |

Hi Mzuri: While I agree about supervision, I dont think when you tell your children, particulary with the history those two had, that its ok for them to go out and play, your thinking anything this horrible will happed to them. I know many children who go out to play unsupervised at that age and they are not kidnapped, they dont drown etc. I am sad for this family as we have no idea how great these two bright young men could haven become. I respectfully disagree about your comment about the parents as the young men asked permission to do something they have done before with no such outcome. You have to be able to let children play. They were checked on at an appropriate time frame in my view for the age. I would have done the same thing, which does not make me a neglectful parent. LiLi |

That's why we have BACK YARDS!!! Look, you can supervise your children in any way that you see fit. And you can disagree with my point of view that these ppl were neglectful - that's fine. But if you watch the news, then you should know that it's not okay to let your young children (or even your older ones) go wherever they want and do whatever they choose. It's not even safe to let them out of your eyesight anymore. Here in my town, a couple of years ago someone snatched a little girl out of the Wal-Mart store. He didn't actually snatch her - the videos showed that he said something to her and he led her out of the store. And the mom thought the dad was watching her, and the dad thought the mom was watching her and NOBODY was watching her. A couple of days later her remains were found in an alley where the man had tried to set her on fire to destroy the evidence. It was all over the news, there were candlelight vigils, and Wal-Mart blasted audio alerts that you need to keep your children close. That was then. But now everytime I go to Wal-Mart - guess what? All the little children are walking around unsupervised and nobody gives a care. And everytime something unfortunate like this happens it's always the same response - BOO HOO - I didn't think it would happen to my children. We're not living in 1955 Mayberry. It's not business as usual!!! Ppl need to get real, comprehend that there are natural and man-made dangers out here, and protect OUR children better than this. |

The time when you could allow your kids to go around by themselves is over.

I agree with you its not safe. Im sure we can all come up with extreme cases of children being snatched etc. but I am willing to bet my unemployment check that everyday in this country children go about day to day activities ALONE and nothing happens to them. Clearly the grandfather of these two young men had no qualms about them going out to play like they surely have been doing all thier young lives. I am sad for them as I advocate for children everyday of my life but you also cant live in fear. Children have to learn boundaries. We can keep an eye on them but at some point you have to trust them and society that they will be safe. There has to be balance. Many children dont have a backyard. This looks like a case of one of the boys falling in the water and the other trying to save him and they both drowned. Very sad.. LiLi |

They will not be safe. I am betting they were killed and thrown in there. They searched that lake before and found nothing. |

someone once told me,"you have to watch children, because they can't watch themselves". i can't arugue that point. but then again, i don't know who is capable of watching a child every single waking moment. very sad story. |
