Three point solution to illegal immigration. 1) Build a patrolled Chinese Wall-style barrier along the entire U.S.-Mexico border. 2) Deport and repatriate all illegal aliens currently living in the United States. 3) Revoke the citizenship of any descendent of an illegal immigrant, and dispense them as in step 2. (This would obviously be subject to a variety of interpretations.) Think it’s a joke. This approach is being widely floated in many prominent political circles, and one or more of its components may well be incorporated into any final compulsory legislation.

I'm fine with 1) and 2), though I might be concerned with the manner is which they are done. I mean, I wouldn't want the "Wall" to be electrified or something. And I wouldn't want US-styled storm troopers kicking-in doors Hispanic neighborhood and dragging some hapless undocumented daylaborer by her hair off to some bullet train to the Border. But there's nowayinhell 3) gonna happen. Because, first/foremost, the 14th Amendment to the US Constitution grants EVERYONE born in the US citizen. You'll NEVER get an Amendment overturning that through the Congress, signed byt the President and then ratified by the States. But, if we wanted to be hardcore, what we could do is declare that even though one has given birth to a child in the US one can STILL be expatriated from the US WITHOUT the child. Perhaps facing the daunting prospect of having to leave the US sans one children might compel many to do what's necessary to become legal US residents and citizens. |

A wall won't keep them out - they'll just dig more tunnels. Deportation doesn't work, they turn right around and come back. As a resident in a border town swamped by illegals/legals (I can't tell the difference) let me tell you about some real problems that I observe that I feel need to change. 1. They don't speak American. Mexicans here don't feel the need to speak English and they get upset when you don't speak Spanish back to them. I'm talking about when you go into a store to conduct business - the cashiers speak Spanish - not English. I mean Wal-Mart ppl! Wal-Mart hires Mexicans who speak NO ENGLISH!!! As cashiers!!! In the U.S.!!! Make them speak American or hire an American. 2. Make Mexicans take driver's training and get a driver's license. In Mexico, citizens aren't required to take driver's training or testing. A Mexican simply shows proof of age (16) and they are issued a driver's license. But they can't drive. Then they come to the U.S. with their licenses, in their raggedy cars, cause accidents, but they don't have insurance. It's a mess!!! 3. Stop hiring illegal aliens. All these jobs that Americans supposedly don't want to do, what are they? Give those jobs to U.S. welfare, food stamp, public assistance recipients (if they are able bodied), and unemployed ppl. Why do we need ppl from other countries doing work that we don't want to do? This is nonsense. 4. Teach these ppl about birth control. Mexicans don't practice birth control and they proliferate like there's no tomorrow. Mexican women think nothing of having 6, 8, 10 children - that they can't even afford. 5. Reduce gang activity. Along with the illegal immigrants come gang related problems and crimes such as burglary, car theft, meth labs, drive bys, random violence, etc. This is a major problem. 6. Collect income tax. When these illegal aliens are hired, they are paid in cash which is not reported income and they never pay tax. Why should we be required to pay income taxes when illegal aliens aren't doing so. Make them pay income taxes like everybody else. 7. They drain our criminal justice system. Our jails and prisons are already overpopulated and court cases are backlogged. When an illegal alien is arrested he is placed in our jails where he receives meals, health care, etc. until his trial and then he is released or sentenced to prison where our tax dollars further support him. When they are arrested they should be turned over to Mexican law enforcement to deal with. Our judicial systems are already overloaded. 8. Stop requiring Americans to speak Spanish in order to qualify for a job. Many of the jobs now require applicants to be bi-lingual - English/Mexican. Even some federal government jobs ppl!!! The federal govt requires you to speak Mexican in order for you to be qualified for a job in the United States of America!!! 9. Stop giving illegal aliens free health care. These Mexicans will come over here and use our medical facilities because, by law, the hospitals can't turn them away. They come over here from over there just to have their babies. But if a U.S. citizen has no insurance - guess what? he gets no treatment unless it's a matter of life or death. It's crazy! 10. Stop giving them free educations. There are areas along the U.S./Mexican border where the children cross the border to attend U.S. schools!!! Hello ppl - our tax dollars are providing educations to illegal Mexican aliens. Those are just a few problems that come to mind but there are more. Anyone who believes that illegal aliens are benefitting the rest of us is uninformed. This is a major problem and if it isn't addressed within the next couple of years, it's going to be too late.

Fact of the matter is these people are not going anywhere. As an immigrant myself (to Canada not the U.S) it's hard to say oh send them all back to where they came from, but at the same time the sheer number of these people coming across into the U.S is going to have disastrous effects on the U.S economically. I think the best option is to deport the ones you can, and create stricter border control measures. However, I doubt any of that will happen, following this story you get the sense that mexican illegal immigrants are being exploited by both political parties, by the Republican party(free labour for big bussiness) and the Democrats for votes if they push the issue of keeping the illegals. So its seems that this whole issue is going is through the regular political games despite what we see in the media. I probably sound very mean and hypocritical since I am myself an immigrant to North America, but my parents went through the proper channels. Still its hard to look away from the reality, not to mention the economic impact for poorer americans, majority of them who happen to be black. |

And after we do that, we can help solve our own problems: Make them niggaz speak some real English... black English don't count. Teach these niggers about birth control. Reduce gang activity. Stop all these black men from draining our criminal justice system. LOL. Are you fucking serious...?

They'll do nothing. The rich white folks want cheap labor to work in labor intensive fields--to make their beds and take care of their kids and put roofs on their houses etc. You negroes talk back and want too much money. What better slave laboreres than those who you can deport the minute they don't want what is going on. As a white man says, "The Latinos know the white man is El Jefe. Better start learning Spanish. |

Nyet what? Are you Russian? The dictionary is wrong? Unless you speaketh the Queen's English, British English, English English or any variation thereof - and you reside in the United States of America and you speak English - then you speaketh American English. American is a language. http://www.webster.com/dictionary/american Why can't you stay on topic? Aren't we discussing illegal immigration? And please don't bother telling me that "speaketh" isn't really a word. I know that already.

I'm with you, Nels. American is not a language per se. It's an idiom - English spoken with a different accent. And you really did put things in perspective, Dobes. LOL. I read where it is silently understood among lawmakers that as far as immigration is concerned the status quo will not change. In the labor market, it's really about supply and demand. All of the reform talk is just obfuscation. |

If these phrases and words weren't spoken in English then Americans wouldn't know that they weren't used by them. All English-speaking people can communicate, inspite of the different idioms they speak in. |

By the way, what DID you think of "Napoleon Dynamite"? When I saw it I said to myself, "This explains Cynique." For those of you who don't know about the movie it takes place in this real podunk town in Idaho where the people's idea of a good time is tasting milk and trying to figure out where it came from ("This tastes like this cow got into an onion patch"). The main characters are this incredibly vacuous kid, Napoleon and his pal, Pedro. They spend most of their time standing around looking slack jawed and it ain't no biggie because there ain't nothing happening. It takes some time, but after a while you are howling with laughter at these and the other weirdo inhabitants of the town--it is like a John Waters film without all the puke and dookie eating! |

I get the impression that most folks don't really understand how expensive it is to deport someone. You can't just herd all undocumented hispanics onto a train, call them mexicans and dump them out in Nuevo Laredo.First you have to determine who each one of this.He might not even be a mexican. He might be from Costa Rica.Once you sort out the ones that actually are mexicans you still can't just unilaterally take them back to Mexico. You have to make the appropriate arrangements with the Mexican government. For each and every one of them, individually. That's a lot of pretty expensive paperwork. I don't know where Mzuri is from, but here in texas, if you get pulled over and don't have a driver's license, you go to jail. I don't think that trying to squeeze a couple of bucks out of a guy that pushes a lawn mower for income taxes would be nearly as productive as repealing the royalty waivers the major oil companies have for drilling on goverment property. That would generate about 28 billion in revenue over the next five years right there. If one is concerned about collecting tax money go after the people that have some money to tax. Don't stop giving the illegals free health care.Start giving all of the legals free health care.Every civilized nation, and some distinctly uncivilized ones, have socialized medical care for their citizens. I've had a job for nearly half a century and my entire command of spanish rests in the single phrase ' su trabajo es su credito'I've never been pressed to learn any spanish, nor have I ever pressed anyone working for me to learn any. The jails being overcrowded by illegal aliens is the least of our worries. There are more young brothers in jail at this moment than there are that have a job.If this is effectively addressed we will have plenty of jail space for the illegals. The simple truth of the matter is that this is a very complicated issue with a lot of right and wrong on both sides. There is no silver bullet. And the people passing the laws sit squarely in the pockets of the people benefiting from having a huge class of cheap and totally disenfranchised labor.Mexicans are the niggers of tommorrow. |

My parents waited in line to immigrate legally....a very long line. It angers me that latinos, who give me dirty looks on a regular basis and are outright rude a lot of the time, can simply jump a border, plop right down and not be treated like criminals. It's called illegal immmigration for a reason. They need to be rounded up and sent packing. |

Hola! I love me some authentic Mexican food, the kind you get on your way home from a night out when you stop by a shabby little greasy spoon restaurant with guys wearing earrings and hair nets working behind the counter, and cashiers who are carrying on a conversation in both English and Mexican at the same time, as niggas are lined up waiting their orders, salivating at the thought of relieving their attacks of the muncies, hopin those aren't roaches in the re-fried beans, requesting "hot" not "mild" sauce. gusto means "pleasure", but not necessarily that word in particular, but more the meaning. So, they're actually saying something more like "much pleasure". It's odd to translate some words from Spanish to English with exact accuracy. Taco Bell tastes nothing like Mexican food, but more like some American health food version of it. Don't eat the beans in Mexican restaurants, because they usually cook it with lard. (Also, be careful eating in Vietnamese restaurants unless they're vegetarian because they "pork up" nearly everything on the menu.) |

to like, or be pleasing to is gustar. gusto doesn't mean pleasure el gusto does, however gusto with an accent over the "o" is the preterite form. Mucho gusto means Pleased to meet you or nice to meet you. It's an idiom. Has nothing to do with the verb itself. |

My opinion on the topic: I don't give a flying f**k. When only european immigrants were coming in BY THE MILLIONS to Ellis Island, they had people to WELCOME THEM and even help them find more "american/anglo" sounding names so that they would fit in better. They didn't care at the time that they may be taking jobs/housing/opportunities from blacks and natives. They should continue to not care now that it's hispanics/africans/asians taking jobs/housing/opportunities from them. I only care about EQUAL TREATMENT. I wouldn't tell ANY hispanic/african/asian immigrant anything I wouldn't tell a european immigrant. And I know people may wonder what I would feel if an immigrant "took" my job....probably the same thing I would feel if an american took my job. |

And most of those bitching about illegal immigrants, are from people who didn't come in illegally....only because no one gave a damn to categorize it as such. They packed a bag, took a boat over, jumped off, and no questions were asked. So SCREW THEM. Hell, they even got to use bathrooms/restaurants/grocery stores that not even blacks BORN HERE were able to use. And now they have the nerve to say they don't want "foreigners" here? I'm sure the native americans didn't want foreigners here either, but who cared what they thought? So, I'm not about to assist them in their hypocrisy. And I'm waiting for the day they say, "only those NATIVE to this land should stay here". I'll find a reservation somewhere and HELP THEM write up protest signs saying, "we're glad you finally agree." |
