Alleged Rape in N.C. Plays to Stereotypes By ALLEN G. BREED, AP National Writer

DURHAM, N.C. - The case seems to fit the stereotypes so perfectly. The accused rapists are white, the woman is black. The men go to Duke University, the expensive private college with the championship sports teams and big TV deals. The woman studies across town at chronically underfunded and oft-overshadowed North Carolina Central University.

The men are lacrosse jocks, many of them recruited from tony Northern prep schools. She's a 27-year-old divorced mother of two who went to the Duke students' house to do some exotic dancing and make a little extra money.
It's so easy to see the incident at the shabby university-owned house — just a mile from the iconic Gothic Duke Chapel — in terms of powerlessness and privilege, town and gown, black and white. Many on campus and in the streets of this gritty working-class vertex of the famed Research Triangle are framing it just that way.
But not everybody is comfortable with that.
"I think along with the awfulness of the incident has come a real desire to condemn a lot of the Duke students because they are people of privilege, maybe," Durham resident Paul Montgomery said as he stood outside the Trinity Park house where the party occurred. "I just hope people kind of take into account that there is ... more than meets the eye."
The white, three-bedroom house with the crumbling black shutters sits on the edge of Walltown, a predominantly black and poor neighborhood outside the school's low stone wall where many residents still refer to Duke as "the plantation."
On the night of March 13, a black woman made a tearful call to 911 to complain that a white man from the house at 610 N. Buchanan Boulevard — which was being leased by three lacrosse team members — had shouted a racial slur at her and a friend. She told police that someone had recently defaced a neighborhood car with the letters "KKK."
"I'm just so angry I didn't know who to call," the woman sobbed in impotent rage. "They didn't harm me in any way, but I just feel so completely offended, I can't even believe it."
That same night, a woman says she and a partner went there expecting to entertain a bachelor party of five, but that they soon found themselves surrounded by more than 40 drunken men barking racial slurs.
"We started to cry," she told The News & Observer of Raleigh. "We were so scared."
She told police she and her friend left the house. Jason Bissey was smoking a cigarette on the front porch next door and said he heard some of the party demand a refund.
He heard one shout, "Hey bitch! Thank your grandpa for my nice cotton shirt."
Someone from the house apologized and coaxed the women back inside. It was then, the woman says, that she was dragged into a bathroom and raped, beaten and choked for a half hour.
Police say medical evidence is consistent with a sexual assault. Officers recovered the woman's makeup bag, cell phone and identification from the house — as well as four red-polished fingernails she says were broken off during the struggle.
A judge ordered 46 members of the team to submit DNA samples. Because the woman says her attackers were white, the squad's lone black member was not tested.
People on and off campus were outraged that it took police nearly three days to search the house. They were even more incensed that it took two weeks for the university to make the decision to suspend the team's season.
Protesters have marched almost daily, banging pots and pans outside the white house and demonstrating in front of Provost Peter Lange's home. Signs alternately condemning and supporting the players have appeared and disappeared from the players' now-vacant house.
The team captains issued a statement Wednesday expressing "sincere regret over the lapse in judgment in having the party." But they say the DNA tests will prove "that any allegation that a sexual assault or rape occurred is totally and transparently false."
Durham is a fairly racially balanced city; blacks and whites each comprise about 45 percent of the population. But Duke does not mirror the community at large — only 11 percent of the 6,244 undergraduates are black.
The economic chasm between the university and the town is also large. It costs about $44,000 to attend Duke — $3,000 more than the mean household income in Durham, and about $34,000 more than the in-state cost of attending North Carolina Central.
Slightly more than half of Duke's lacrosse team came from private schools, including the lone Durham native, but assistant sports information director Art Chase said many receive some form of financial aid.
Duke says it wants to be a good neighbor. University President Richard Brodhead said the school recently bought the house on Buchanan Boulevard and 14 others because of complaints of raucous parties and uncivil behavior.
"When we decided to purchase these properties, it was our intention to turn them around and sell them to single families, to do something good for the neighborhoods," he said last week.
Duke does have a history of outreach in Walltown and the larger community. Durham native Maya Jackson remembers fondly how Duke students would come to her elementary school to help out.
But the 23-year-old junior sociology major at NCCU also acknowledged that there has always been "an air" about Dukies.
"Some of them came off as snooty," said Jackson, who is black. "That can be said the same for Central students ... It just comes off a little bit stronger when it involves Duke students."
Said Rayone Bland, a black divinity student at Duke: "There is really a sense of, `I'm entitled to do what I want to do.' It's kind of like the staff and judicial affairs and everyone is just here kind of to keep the country club running and to keep everyone happy. So there's really not any accountability, I don't think, for students.
"So being told `No' for the first time, I mean, is mind-blowing for them."
All over town, there is a sense that battle lines have been drawn. One afternoon, Jeff Shaw, 20, a sophomore from Winston-Salem, sported a brand-new Duke lacrosse T-shirt he bought to show his support for friends on the team.
"I feel like it's Duke and Durham against these people" on the team, he says.
On Wednesday, several hundred people gathered on the East Campus for a "Take Back the Night" march from the student union to Duke Chapel. The annual protest was planned months ago, but recent events gave it a special urgency.
As Flannery Hysjulien waited for the rally to begin, she bent low in front of a garbage can and stared at a flier plastered there. It bore the heading "PLEASE COME FORWARD" — and the names and pictures of nearly the entire lacrosse team.
The 25-year-old Durham native, a white student in social work at the University of North Carolina in nearby Chapel Hill, says she has watched Duke try to build bridges with the community. She says it is a difficult task only complicated by this latest incident.
"I really think there is a feeling that this connects to a history of racism in Durham and discrimination in Durham that is still very much felt by residents of Durham," says Hysjulien, who was on campus for the march. "I think we're a city that remains quite divided, although we're attempting to become a more unified community."
As the crowd massed, a white man with a bullhorn leaned out of a nearby dorm window and shouted, "The lacrosse team is innocent." Another walked across the quad, pumping his fist and shouting hoarsely, "They're innocent."
Freshman Addison Nuding stood on the grass divide with his Frisbee and bemoaned the rush to judgment — on both sides.
"With a school of this prestige, I think that we're always going to be the target," says the 19-year-old wrestler from Reading, Pa., a white whose friends on the lacrosse team have assured him no rape occurred that night. "It's an easy target."
Jeannine Carpenter, 30, who is studying linguistics at Duke, doesn't think the incident should reflect on the Duke community as a whole. But for many people, the white Ph.D. candidate knows it inevitably will.
"There's a stereotype of white Duke privilege that can't always be denied," she says. "I think that there's always historical truth in stereotypes. Whether it's present day or not is definitely a question."

Let's be really REAL here: Nobody gives a dayam about these women. Okay. Maybe you and few other sistahs do. But for the most part, this thing is being trumped-up because it presents a very convenient opportunity to "Stick it to duh man!!!". Now. I don't necessarily mind that. But I just can't go along with the self-righteous charade that accompanies it.
I don't have any cause to defend Duke's lacrosse team and Duke's administrators, alumni, etc. But at this point, the only thing we really have is an ALLEGATION of rape of a stripper by some men at a party. Shyt. I'll BET some form of sexual assault occurs at LEAST 1 in 10 parties featuring a stripper, especially where there are a couple dozen DRUNKEN men in attendance.
This is only an issue because the allege victim is a poor Black student of a poor Black school and the alleged offenders are rich White students of one of the nation's Whitest and wealthiest school that located in the good ol' boy South.
Now. All of those make for interesting sociological study and debate. But at this point, there no proof that any of that have ANY bearing on what occurred.
Everyone wants to destroy the lives of all the men who attended the stripparty, fire Duke's administration and burns the City of Durham's name in effigy...WITHOUT any clear, accurate and fair accounting of what really happened.
Just how MANY lacrosse player were involved in the alleged rape? Did all the guys even witness what had transpired? Or worse: What if the culprits are NOT even students of Duke but are instead some White yokels who crashed party. Should the reputations and athletic and academic careers of ALL the players be destroyed because of what maybe on 2 or 3 guys were involved in?
Really. Have we reach a point where we Black assert that guilt by association, combined with being rich, White and a student of a highfalutin' school is sufficient to ruin someone? |

I think I would like to witness some fair and complete accounting of what ACTUALLY happened before I endeavor to feel much of anything at ALL about what happen.
To me, at this point, all I see is an ALLEGED rape and a LOT of foks seeking to use a lot of stuff that is not necessarily relevant to what ALLEGEDLY happened to their political/economic benefit. |

I am not interested in sticking it to the man. My concern is that these women are human beings and it is very possible that they were violated. I think that a complete investigation is called for and the truth should be sought diligently. Regardless of the profession of these women-it did not give anyone the right to injure and to violate them.
My concern is that people will sit on their hands and not pursue this case simply because the victims are strippers. |

Which is? I think that anyone who has been hurt should receive justice. Don't you think that if these women were white and had accused some black men of raping them that it would be in the news also. I am not naive enough to think that people are not using this situation for all sorts of illicit gain. However, this does not overshadow the fact that two women were injured and that a crime may have been committed. |

I am sure that there are other instances of black strippers and or prostitutes who have been raped by well to do white men, but whose stories have not made the news. Every rape is not reported. Some victims don't report their assault because they are embarrased and or feel that they will take all of the blame for what happened to them. This is so sad. |

I would not at all be surprised to discover that the majority of those Black female strippers and hookers (and school teachers) who have been raped were assaulted by BLACK men (who were rich, had modest incomes and were broke as hell). |

Well, if they think these young men are so fine, I sure wish they'd start giving them jobs, daddies, and teach them how to keep their behinds out of prison--in short, teach them how to be men. They can start by making them support their families--marry some wives.. support thier kids & babymommas. One thing's for sure, if it happens, it'll happen through the white man--he's the only man capable of getting things done... he and Denzel, of course. |

I don't think people do not care about the 100,000 other black strippers who have been raped its just what this case repersents. It repersents everything that is wrong with soceity in general, strong hurting weak, race, gender, and class inequalities. I think its important people make a big deal about this case, because if this was a white girl raped it would have been all about class and gender. This happening to a black girl makes it even more important, because its iconic of everything that is wrong with America. Well that's all I have to say gotta go to class, bye. |

To paraphrase Angela Davis, "If they come for the strippers in the morning, guess who they may come for at night?" All this talk about this being the women's fault makes me ill. If a woman walks down the stree butt naked, that does not give any man the right or excuse to rape her. No man is "owed" sex.
Are we really going to go back to the days when a woman's sexual history can be used against her in rape cases? Will only 80 year old, non-drinkin' nuns be believable rape victims?
The legal process will play itself out in this case. Until then, these young men are innocent until proven otherwise.
Too bad too many people have already convicted this mother for her choices and decisions. |

Odd. There was plenty of compassion for a convicted death row gang leader. Folks marching in the streets and lighting candles and whatnot for a man who helped contributed to one of the biggest blights on many of our communities.
But no one cares about women who dance or take off their clothes for money. And when people do express caring for them, we are accused of all manner of ulterior motives.
Too bad. |

Here's my take on the Duke U. rape/hate crime:
I'm at a loss for words
MORE OPINION ON THE DUKE LACROSS RAPE CASE
I'm at a total loss for words as I meditate the implications and the profound impact of the Duke Lacross rape case have on me. However, I do know that preppy or upper class white men of college age feel entitled to bodies of lower class women of all races and ethnicities. They call the lower and working class people "townies" and tend to feel that those people are beneath them. To the future leaders of society, these women, especially black women don't count so some of them have taken upon themselve to take advantage of such women.
In the Official Preppy Handbook, according to Lisa Birnbaum, a preppy, men of her class regard lower class women as "bad" and want to sow their wild oats with such women. The men don't marry the women, they marry women of their own class and race. In Bell Hooks, Black Looks, she recalled walking behing preppy Yalies as they discuss about scoring black women from the neighborhood next to the school. These guys want "the experience" without consequences. It's the same mentality Strom Thurmond have when using his black maid back in 1925.
I briefly read a post at Rachel's Tavern regarding racial/class double standard on "snitching." It used to be called the code of silence. It's disturbing and threatening when used by black men and poorer white men but it is okay when it's used by upper class elite men. After all, they control the power and resources of this nation. They are the food chain. So whatever happens to poor black women is inconsequential to them. To many of them held negative views of black women. They are stereotyped as Jezebels, whores, mammies, Sapphires, women with a chip on their shoulders, loose women in general. Those stereotypes are reflected in movies made by black and white men such as Soul Plane, Monster's Ball, Queen of the D*mned, Bringing Down the House, Booty Call, Save the Last Dance, Angel Heart, to name a few.
Another thing, whenever a nonblack woman of means is missing, assaulted, or dead, the newsmeisters made darn sure that it gets covered. If its a black woman such as the black college student(I'm tired of hearing the stripper/exotic dancer label), Latoyia Figueroa, Romona Moore, etc., it gets less coverage other than local stations(Link: Here). When they do get coverage, they are usually brief and disparaging of the victim. Remember Latoyia?
I know I have to write this in a hurry but these are things to think about.

I'm outraged at the fact that these men, future leaders of the country, feel that it was okay to violently violate a vulnerable woman just because she's black and working in the sex industry to support herself and her family. This incident shows us that powerful white men still stereotype black women as sexually available to them at all times. It's a theme woven throughout American history when powerful white slave owners felt free to force themselves onto black and biracial black women without remorse or reproof/fear of punishment to segregation times when men can come into black neighborhoods to pick and choose these women or exploit them at will, also at the place of employment, which at that period consists of maid service or working in the fields. Today, black women are at the receiving end of employment that expose them to racialized sexual harrassment. The sex industry is both racialized to satisfy the tastes of powerful white men today. Look at the porn industry, for instance.
Let's all take a stand by champion the woman who has been through alot instead of tearing her down or ignore her plight as it has been the case of law enforcement and the mainstream media. I'll have a follow up on this sad story from Carolina because this has to come out in the open about the ongoing and vicious exploitation of women in general, black and biracial/multiracial black women in particular by men of all races has to stop. And I will not be silent in the face of this.

I would not at all be surprised to discover that the majority of those Black female strippers and hookers (and school teachers) who have been raped were assaulted by BLACK men (who were rich, had modest incomes and were broke as hell).
Important point that needs to be underscored. The maority of rape, assualts, murders, domestic violence, incest, child molestation, etc of Blacks are by Blacks. We have a lot of work to do in our communities to combat these problems. |

I've kinda lost the...thread of this thread. I've read many of ABM's posts on this board and he does not strike me as any of those things some of the other posters said. It should be possible for intelligent adults to disagree about ideas without name calling.
On the other hand I understand how emotional this topic is for many women on these boards. I will be the first to raise my hand and admit that I have at one time or another put myself in situations that I shouldn't have. And many of us know other Black women (including mothers, grandmothers, great grandmothers) who have made sacrifices in order to feed and make a better future for their kids.
So I think some of us read of a case like this and think, "There but for the Grace go I..."
I hope that this case can bring needed attention, action, and healing around some very important issues facing our communities--including our college campuses. Call me naive, but I do have hope.

ever since our people were brought to this country on slave ships. the white man has raped, not only our women, but our men, boys, and girls also. if this stripper/ whore put her self in a situation where she was going to take her clothes off, (and probably have sex if the price was right)for a bunch of white men. then she will get no sympathy from me. these strippers' whores are the biggest disgrace to our people. because she is too lazy to do something other than take her clothes off for money, this is the situation she put herself in. we don't even know if she was sexually assaulted. i don't know. but what i do know is in the town i live in there are plenty of single hispanic moms who work jobs that don't require them to be strippers/whores. and they work very hard. its sad that some people will try and give this whore an exuse for what she does. "oh, she's just trying to support her child, or "her man left her, this is what she's got to do" first of all, she made the decision to have sex with someone who was probably a deadbeat to begin with. she chose the man had his child and now she is dealing with the consequences of her actions. if she wants to strip/whore for money because she is lazy. these types of situations come with the territory. and no im not saying there is an exuse for raping someone. im not saying strippers/whores should be raped. but, for people to ask where are the protests, or outcrys, i think is ridiculous im glad this case is getting very little attenton. lazy strippers/whores don't deserve protests or outcrys, they deserved to be ignored. which, thankfully is being done by our people. maybe she will learn a lesson from all this. that is if anything really happened. |

I'm getting sick of people PRETENDING that we're ignoring her because she's a whore. I said in another thread:
