By Claudia Parsons Tue Mar 14, 5:17 AM ET NEW YORK (Reuters) - Jazz legend Miles Davis, who was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on Monday, may be resurrected in a biographical movie with Don Cheadle playing the lead, Davis' family said. ADVERTISEMENT His nephew, Vince Wilburn, told reporters after Davis was inducted into the Hall of Fame that Sony Pictures was working on a movie as well as planning several CDs to celebrate what would have been Davis' 80th birthday later this year. "People are submitting scripts to Sony Pictures," Wilburn said. "A few names have come up (to play Davis) but Don Cheadle's name keeps coming up," he said. Wilburn said the movie could touch on Davis' private life as well as his career as a groundbreaking jazz musician who later branched out into music that crossed over into rock and funk. Wilburn said a possible director for the film was Antoine Fuqua, best known for "Training Day," the movie for which Denzel Washington won a best-acting Oscar in 2002. Davis' son, Gregory, recalled touring with his father, who died of a stroke in 1991, and said he would have been proud of the honor bestowed on him at Monday's gala ceremony in New York's Waldorf-Astoria hotel. "We're very proud because this man's ancestors came out of slavery and he's an international icon all over the world and America should be proud of him," he said. Asked about Davis' reputation as a tough and difficult man, his daughter, Cheryl, conceded that image was accurate at times but said there was another side to him. "He wasn't an angry black man ... he was very humorous. ... He lived life to the fullest and he absorbed cultures from all over the world."

I'm not feelin it. I think Cheadle is spectacular, but I just can't envision him as Miles. I know he can do Miles' voice though.

First off......I Love me some Don Cheadle....especially when he does his English accent (Oceans 11/12) I think Don Cheadle can pull it off..... ...not sure how they are going to work out the hair situation...... ...but Don Cheadle has an air about him which in my opinion can work...... I really hope the movie makes it to the big screen....I don't think it will be as good as Ray but I hope quite comparable... |

I like don cheadle too...but tha brother's butt needs some work. There was a scene in the movie crash, where he was lying on the bed nude...girl, maybe some deep knee squats or something will do the trick to shape up his azz. But i agree with you, i think he'll do a great job as miles davis. |

But my friend thought he sounded ridiculous. I guess different strokes for different folks. He also comes off sometimes as a little arrogant. I don't know. Does anyone else see that? |

I agree, Kaotic and Jackie. Miles was a lean, keen-featured man, as is Don so I think Don is a good choice for this role and will have no problem capturing the cool essence of Miles. But he will probably have to get a jeri curl - at least when playing Miles in his later years. LOL Cheadle played Sammy Davis, Jr., in a made for TV movie about the "Rat Pack" and did a good job! He's a very versatile actor. |

DC is superb at voices. Besides the English accent he's great with Rwandan. I think he's phenomenal, I just can't picture him as Miles. They don't resemble and Miles seemed so sullen and complex. I never met him, that's just the impression that I got. Don't know if DC is arrogant. If so, it's probably because he's a celebrity. Or because he's a man. Or perhaps he's just sullen and complex |

The chances of an actor looking exactly like the actual person he has been selected to play are slim. The idea is to cast someone of a similar type, someone capable of taking on the demeanor and persona of the individual to be portrayed. This is what acting is all about. I think Don Cheadle can handle the role of Miles Davis. When he was alive, a lot of people did tongue-in-cheek impersonations of Miles because he had such a distinctive way of speaking and was a real curmudgeon. |

To be honest - I really can't envision anyone doing Miles. I think that whoever should just leave it alone. It's kind of like when Shanice tried to do Minnie a few years ago. Hello! She was one of a kind. You can't reproduce her and you can't emulate her. It's impossible. There will never ever be another living soul that sings like Minnie Ripperton. That's the way I feel about Miles. But those are just my thoughts on the matter. |

Sounds like if it was up to you, mzuri, no movie should ever be made about the life of any noteworthy person. But movies are, after all, about "make-believe". People had their doubts about Diana Ross portraying Billie Holiday. That was really a stretch, but - Ross ended up earning an Oscar nomination for this role. Whatever. |

Honestly... U r never going to get the exact replica in a biopic. That's where a person's imagination comes into effect... Now Jamie Foxx is not the exact replica of Ray Charles but he did a hell of a job! I am still blown away to this day of Jamie's portrayal of Ray Charles..... I think the world could stand a few moments to take a look into one of the most influential and innovative musicians in the world. I would love to see it myself. I actually have his autobiography on my bookshelf which I have been wanting to read for the longest time - I might have to crack the book open because of this thread alone. ...I also think it would be beneficial for younger individuals to be able to experience Miles Davis's life and also know where 1/2 of today's sampled rap songs derive from.... |
