Yes, I have to swallow my Ophobia and say that last week girlfriend tried to help her little Omaniacs with a show where she was giving them advice on how to get out of debt. That was good. Of course the black couple that she had on there did feature a male with that deer caught in the headlights, helpless what the hell am I doing here, castrated capon rooster look, but I guess we have to take small steps to get to the Kingdom. So hats off to her for it, with her manhating self! |

But then again, it's a sure fire sign when you have to big up a black muti-tri-zillionare for taking the time to acknowledge black people, wouldn't you say? |

What does Oprah expect? On the one hand, she does her "Favorite Things" show where she promotes iPod, Sony Vaio, BlackBerry, BurBerry, Nike, expensive watches, designer clothes, perfumes, etc. She goes on and on about how great all this stuff is and how ppl just can't live without it. http://www.oprah.com/presents/2005/holiday/gifts/gifts_oft.jhtml And then she chastises ppl for being heavily in debt. Surely she knows the average joe can't afford all that stuff. She should make up her mind about whether she wants her followers to be a bunch of mindless consumers or whether she wants them to be financially responsible - since ppl can't seem to think for themselves, to let her tell it. |

I guess the thought of increasing your income, to afford your wants, rather than going into debt, is lost on those who go out and buy whatever anyone (advertisers were here long before Op had her TV show) tell them they have to have to be a person. That's why most people are so heavy in debt -- wanting and buying things they can't afford. An Ipod is a want and not a need. A Blackberry is a want and not a need. You get the idea. But the Favorite things show is more about gift ideas for one to give others. Doesn't mean you have to go out and buy the items. |

Hi Blklitreader - Obviously there was advertising and debt before Oprah, but I was pointing out the irony of her promoting all of these overpriced "necessities," being an advertiser for CitiCorp, and then telling the rest of us earthlings that we need a "debt diet." Oprah truly influences her audiences/followers to purchase the items she recommends. The same way that her book club picks cause an otherwise never-heard-of-publication to become a number-one-best-seller, she moves the merchandise that she pushes on her "Favorite Things" show, where everyone in the audience gets fabulous freebies - and a substantial percentage of her television viewers run out to buy them too. Manufacturers and advertisers are clamoring for her to bless their products. The Black couple currently featured is $170,000 in debt (the debt diet is a series). $170,000!!! Not from buying Oprah's favorite things, but from being hyperconsumers. And when they're sitting with Oprah you can practically read their minds. They have this pensive expression on their faces like they're just waiting for the confetti to drop and for O to present them with a giant cardboard check. Otherwise, it's going to take them forever to pay off $170K. |

LOL Chris! Oprah has done so many wonderful things for the Black community and she's very generous with her money, but I think that she is totally out of touch with reality. She drives me nuts with all of her advice about what the rest of us should be doing, reading, thinking and buying. Sometimes she is so absurd. Like the time her decorator guy was promoting his new affordable interior collection. Oprah was on the set oohing and aahing at everything. And then she held up a pillow and said it's only "$75.00" or some such outrageous dollar amount. I'm talking about one of those tiny little accent pillows that is used to add color, it's not even big enough for your head. Then there was the time that she and her make-up guy were showing off all her make-up products. And she was talking about all her little compacts and lipsticks and how luxurious it all was. But she's a billionaire - regular ppl can't afford to spend those kinds of dollars on make-up. She forgot that ppl gotta eat! Anyway, I'd be happy to bash her with you anytime

Mzuri, none of those items featured on the Favorite Thing shows were "necessities." If so, then I guess I will forever be in need, for a lot of things, especially those things that I can't afford. Sheesh. I've been following those couples on the debt diet shows. But, they didn't get there because of Oprah. And, since they did buy those items, used them, and enjoyed (?) them, then they need to pay for them. I don't care if one is in debt for $170 or $170,000. So, it seems those who have a tendency to want things they can't afford would be in debt if Oprah went off the air tomorrow. But then she's had programs that showed folks need to responsible -- for what they do, for way they behave, even for the things they buy. It's a shame you need a TV show to tell you that you are in way over your head, with things, that you can't afford. As well as the fact that people can't think for themselves. So, I suppose that Oprah should cancel her show, since based on what you say, because folks will want what she puts on the air during the broadcast, whether they need them, want them or can afford them. It's amazing how one person is blamed for another's overspending. Those were grown people sitting up on the show -- not children. |

Right. They aren't really necessities which is why I used quotation marks. Yet Oprah makes certain products seem like "must haves" when she recommends them to her followers. Did you watch the show? I never said that Oprah should cancel her show or that she is responsible for ppl's spending habits, but I think that she should stop talking out of both sides of her mouth. One side advocates consumerism - with her endless chatter about how magnificent this, that and the other is and by actively endorsing products to her audience - while the other side admonishes ppl to be responsible and remain debt free. When most earthlings aren't Oprah riche (as in nouveau riche) and can't afford all of those goods without incurring debt. But she doesn't get it, get it? Because she's out of touch. And Oprah doesn't simply put things on the air. She actively endorses them. She has fashion shows. She promotes movies. She recommends books thru her book club. She tells women that they are wearing the incorrect bra size and endorses $85 bras. She invites guests to advertise their merchandise. She distributes samples. And she carries clout. All she has to do is say the word and ppl buy the products that she endorses. That's a fact. |

Actually, one of the more interesting things I noticed about this show was how once again Oprah proved herself to be such a big conversation hog. The poor female psychologist couldn't get a word in edgewise because Oprah was so busy pontificating and dispensing advice, explaining to the black guy what he was feeling inside. And what was really killing was how the psychologist deferred to Oprah, anxiously looking at her for approval when she finally got a chance to offer her professional analysis. Gee, it must be nice to be Oprah, - to be a know-it-all full of contradictions yet never have to deal with other know-it-alls full of contradictions. heh-heh |

Mzuri how did you know what I was thinking? Oprah talks out of both sides of her mouth. She does shows where she gives aways houses, cars, Burberrys, etc. She's part of the culture that makes people want to live above their means. On one of her shows she said she threw away a plate because a dinner guest put gum on it. Can you say 'out of touch'? If I threw something away everytime it got dirty I wouldn't have sh*t. She needs to keep shopping at Hermes and stop telling everybody else how to save their pennies. |

Hi Aglae - I didn't hear the one about the gum and the plate. That's pretty stupid since her dishes are probably the most expensive porcelain known to man. She could have sold the gum AND the plate on eBay and donated that money to the rest of us po folks. LOL. She really is trippin though, isn't she? And I know she's not really stupid but she sure acts like it sometimes. |
